Niseko Now!

Saturday 2nd December 2006, 8:37am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy and light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Only light snowfalls yesterday and last night but there's still been a nice top up to the cover keeping it fresh and powdery. Some good snowfalls are expected later today and tonight and right through till Monday. This will mean more and more terrain should be opened by the resort. Off piste is still a bit dodgy with the sasa grass not yet covered. We need well in excess of a metre before most of the sasa is covered.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Saturday 2nd December 2006, 8:48am
Weather conditions: Overcast with sunny spells.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It sure is getting cold here, it got down to around -9 last night and it is still around -5 this morning.
We have had very little snow in the last 24hours but it is predicted to return today and last through the week.
With the temperatures as low as they are the snow is lasting well, despite the lack of new snowfall.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 2nd December 2006, 9:20am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The Naeba site has a snowman on it's webpage as the weather this morning - but from where I'm standing this morning and also looking at the webcams, I'd call it as fairly "fine weather". Perhaps they are meaning the snow that we are still forecast to get later tonight, but right now it is just fairly clear (with the sun out even for a moment just before) and no new snow overnight.... certainly not at lower levels anyway.

We are forecast to have snowfall later tonight and into tomorrow though so hopefully the white fluff will be falling when I file the next report.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 2nd December 2006, 9:56am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain > snow later?
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is out... that wasn't expected! But... it is very mixed weather this morning. There's a lot of cloud around and spots of rain were falling in the town just before. In addition, on the weather news just now it showed a live view from the top of Yuzawa Kogen ropeway and it seemed like a few flakes of snow were very gently beginning to fall up there.

So there is no snowfall to report and it's a mixed start to the day. The good news is that all the forecasts are telling us to expect snow later tonight and into tomorrow.

OK, so a quick update on resort status:

Naeba - 1 artificial snow run open
Kagura - 1 course open on the main gelende (access via the Mitsumata Ropeway);
Iwappara - will open as soon as it can;
GALA Yuzawa - 8th December;
Kandatsu - 16th December;
Ishiuchi Maruyama - 16th December;
Nakazato - 16th December;
Hakkai-san - 16th December;
NASPA New Otani - 23rd December.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 2nd December 2006, 10:13am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow hasn't arrived yet, though there's a sprinkling up top it seems and it's a cold morning. The good news though is that it looks very likely that it will be snowing before the day finishes and we have snow forecast for tomorrow. Hope to bring that good news tomorrow morning...   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 2nd December 2006, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun > snow later
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A sprinkling of snow overnight - nothing major - and a few more lifts opening up this morning. The following parts of the resort now all have (very small) areas open and lifts moving:

Shiga Kogen Ropeway
Ichinose Family

They are reporting between 20 and 40cm. It's all very limited though and I personally am going to wait until we get a decent snowfall of fresh snow for my first runs of the season.

Right now the sun is actually out and some blue skies showing through. Snow is forecast for later in the day and all tomorrow so fingers crossed...   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 2nd December 2006, 12:31pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy with patches of blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Finally starting to look a little more like the winter season we all know and love here in Hakuba. We got a least 5cm of snow down in the valley overnight with more accumulation above the 1000m mark. It was wet snow and it has warmed up a bit now so it is melting, but we are not complaining in the least. Currently sitting under partly cloudy skies and the temperature is hovering around 1 degrees and wind is light from the south east. We are expecting more snow tonight....bring it on! First turns should be in the not so distant future.

Again early season means hazards below the snow. Proceed with caution and carry all the required gear with you when heading out into the backcountry as avalanches will occur even in early season.

Don't let the new snow freeze your brain and let yourself get carried away in the excitement of first lines.   Read more ...
