Niseko Now!

Thursday 29th November 2007, 6:32am
Weather conditions: Cloud with sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a bit cloudy this morning and will most likely be cloudy with a slight chance of sun throughout the day. Temperatures at the base here should be about -3/2 and wind should be more predominantly more westerly. The town is beginning to wake up and the hustle and bustle of preparation can be seen for most businesses are due to open on the 1st.

We are still in that high front and are looking at an intense low off the north east.

The couple of centimeters we've had should make for some good trail riding today.

Not long to go now... this morning is another cloudy one but the resort is gearing up to open this on Saturday. The resort plans to open 8 courses. A 1000m course at Yamabiko and two other 2000 and 4000m courses plan to be ridable right from the beginning.

Lifts that the resort planns to get moving are: the Nagasaka Gondola, Yamabiko four-lift, Yamabiko No 2 four-lift, Uenotaira quad lift and the Skyline connecting lift.

Good news if you are planning on being at the resort for the opening period - one day lift tickets will be just 3000 yen from opening until 21st December.

Looks like it should be a good start to the season.

Furano Now!

Thursday 29th November 2007, 9:39am
Weather conditions: chilly bluebird (blue sky) morning. Light snow floating in the crisp morning rays of sunshine.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The storm of the last few days finished late afternoon yesterday bringing only another few cm in the afternoon.

Overnight temperatures were as low as minus 10 in town, and roads and footpaths are dangerously slippery.

Beautiful clear bluebird skies this morning with bright sunshine glowing the ski resort orange. Low cloud further down the valley would have made for an excellent inversion layer view from the Ryonkaku Onsen on Tokachidake ranges. Furano does experience some beautiful inversion layers during the season which can be a special surprise for first chair guests.

The current forecast is for periods of snow otherwise cloudy for the next 5 days.

Japanese Word/Phrase of the Day:
Throughout the season I thought I'd share some basic Japanese snow/ski resort related terms to help when traveling to Furano, or any other Japanese ski resort.

Today's word: Yuki (Snow)
Today's phrase: Yuki Daisuki (I love snow)

Overcast but with a really high cloud bank all the peaks are visible. Warm temperatures have left the base fairly thin but freezing temperatures today so be prepared for cold conditions if you're getting in some early season runs.
