Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 29th March 2007, 7:58am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a very mild evening, it is a generally cloudy start to the day with just a few patches of blue sky. The forecast is cloud/sun for the day and a top temperature of 14 this afternoon.... at the moment the thermometer says 8 degrees.

While tomorrow may not be as warm, at the moment we are set for a rainy morning and early afternoon.

11am update: Still cloudy but there is a fair bit of blue sky and the sun has been out for a while now.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 29th March 2007, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Overcast becoming clear later.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
High cloud giving an overcast morning here but it looks like it will quickly disperse to give clear blue skies again. There were a few snow showers yesterday but overall only a dusting of fresh in the last 24 hours. The wind is pretty calm today and it will warm up fairly fast.

We are definitely experiencing spring conditions on the mountain now and so the risk of cracks, crevasses, or even avalanches on the steeper slopes is increasing so take care
up there. All gates will open today.

Naeba Now!

Thursday 29th March 2007, 9:24am
Weather conditions: Blue sky with cotton-wool clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a whopping 10 degrees on the gauge in these parts this morning with showers of rain and sun rays in the mix as well. The clouds are skimming across the the Naeba hill with a clearance of about 500 meters above the peak, loping off to the east - I don't know what's so interesting over there, apart from the sun of course. And of course things are turning browner by the day, strategy in Naeba is beginning to become a necessity now as you might find yourself sliding into a dead end, so advice could be to bring out those 'rock boards' and ski's as your precious 'this season/last season' models would likely suffer if your a bit careless. Other than that, there's a bit of a chilly breeze - probably very windy up top.

Weather conditions: Clear sky.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another clear, sunny day here.It was -1 at the mountain base at 8am but the temperature is sure to rise fairly fast today and will bring more spring-like conditions. We have had a few snow showers over the last 24 hours but none has managed to settle in town. Official snow depths on the mountain have dropped by a further 20cm.

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 29th March 2007, 9:44am
Weather conditions: Cloud with rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

Since sometime in the predawn gloom the gentle pitter-patter of rainfall on the roof woke me. At the 0730 hrs. I measured 5 mm of water in the rain gauge. The forecast valley weather is for clouds with rain until mid-day, then the precipitation is to resume in the evening. A high temperature of 14 C and winds getting to "moderate" strength from the west around mid-day. On Tsuga Ike yesterday there was good coverage, at least on the main run down from the top of the gondola to the bottom station of the same. The patrol seems to be doing a good job of marking the hazards as they appear. But remain aware as hazard marking bamboo poles can quickly melt out and over.

The cloud ceiling at the Happo One Lift Company was at the Usagi Daira / top station of the gondola (1,400 m a.s.l.).

Yesterday there were consistent moderate winds from west / south-west at ridge top. The powder skiing was good above 2,200 m a.s.l. on east exposures and considerably lower on sheltered north aspects. So be of good cheer, the good stuff is still out there you just have to really want it.

Of note is that the lower Sakka Lifts at the Happo One Lift Company are closed.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0730 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: 5.5 C
Maximum: 12.0 C
Minimum: 3.0 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: Light from the south-west
Precipitation: Raining
Barometer and trend: 910 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 27 cm
Water: 5 mm
Foot penetration: 5 cm
Surface: melt freeze crystals , 6 mm crystals, wet
Density of surface snow: not observed
Crust: no crust
Cloud ceiling: 1,200 m a.s.l.

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Considerable

Below tree line: Considerable

N.B.: Increased loading (snow with wind transport above and at tree line and rain below tree line), today's forecast high under an overcast sky is 14 C in the valley floor, isothermal snow pack at lower elevations with little or no supportive crust and saturation of the snow pack over buried crust layers all lead one to consider the avalanche hazard as "considerable". With the increasing wet loading of the isothermal snow pack the chances of sudden failure to ground is increasing. Be careful of where you stop and be aware of what is above you.

Travel Advisory:
As the saying goes "You should have been here yesterday." With good visibility the above tree line terrain yielded acceptable powder skiing above 1,700 m a.s.l. on north aspects, and down to 2.200 m a.s.l. on east aspects. Of note there was consistent moderate gusting to strong winds that were scouring and loading well down below the ridge tops. There were two size two, natural trigger, avalanches observed: one in the Garagara Zawa (Happo One's north side) at 1,800 m a.s.l., north-east aspect; and one from the ridge top of Korenge Yama at about 2,600 m a.s.l., south-east aspect.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 29th March 2007, 10:14am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a fairly cloudy and grey start to the day in Shiga Kogen, with a sprinkling of new snow reported in higher regions... at the moment where I am in the central region of Shiga Kogen it is just cloudy with the temperature hovering around 0 degrees. There are some fairly strong winds blowing about at higher levels which may affect some lift operations (currently one of the Yakebitaiyama gondolas is not moving because of the winds).

Nighta operations tonight at Ichinose Family, Ichinose Diamond and Kumanoyu.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 29th March 2007, 10:42am
Weather conditions: Fine.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A great day on the mountain yesterday. Very much spring skiing conditions with sunshine, low winds and slightly slushy snow. Temperatures stayed cool enough during the day for the snow not to get too sticky however. Today temperatures are warmer. It is about 5C at the top at present and base depths are slightly reduced; 165m at Yamabiko and 110cm at Uenotaira. Views down the valley are spectacular but winds are quite high at present, which may help bring in some weather this afternoon. Light snow is expected at the top today and heavy rain tonight.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 29th March 2007, 18:26pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A nice Spring day today in Minakami with warm daytime temperatures. The snow is holding out at Houdaigi and Tenjin but slowly decreasing in depth. The courses still all have good coverage with Spring snow conditions. Good to get up there early in the day to enjoy faster snow.

Houdaigi is planning on running until mid April and Tenjin plans to operate until Golden Week.   Read more ...
