Niseko Now!

Monday 29th January 2007, 8:35am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday remained mostly clear. Last night when I went to bed it wasn't snowing however I was pleasantly surprised to see 10cms of snow this morning. More snow fell overnight than forecast and it is set to continue through the day. Currently it is snowing and this should get quite heavy around midday and ease to lighter snow showers by this evening. The snow that has fallen is very fine grained and has little to no consistency. The visibilty will be poor on the hill today as the snow falls. The Hirafu peak gates are currently closed and may remain that way for the day. Its around -3 degrees in the village and -8 degrees on the hill.

Tomorrow the snow will ease off to showers and the sun may make another appearance. However this will be short lived as heavier snow falls are forecast for Wednesday.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Monday 29th January 2007, 8:43am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night started off as one of the clearest night skies I have seen in a while but clouded over around 10pm and light snowfall began in the early hours of this morning. We have a couple of centimetres on the ground now and it is still falling steadily. The forecast is predicting snow for the rest of today and intermittent snow for the next week.

Visibility will be pretty poor on the mountain today and the slopes are fairly compacted and fast at the moment so take care if you are going up today.

Naeba Now!

Monday 29th January 2007, 8:58am
Weather conditions: Blue sky with a touch of cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A wee bit of snow in the air this morning, A blue-white camouflage sky made up with some low light cloud, of the fluffy type. The sun is shining through in areas which is lightening up parts of Naeba as is if under spot light by him/her upstairs - checking to see how much snow there was last night! Well for the record, 5cm. A little warm, but I reckon where he/she's looking there's more!

I had a '+6 degree C' report from a lady hiking the half-pipe yesterday afternoon - I guess it probably felt more like 30C to her. So expect some icy elevations hiding under the snow today, this morning at least.

Hakuba Now!

Monday 29th January 2007, 9:40am
Weather conditions: Scattered cloud and sunny skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning all you skiers and boarders excited to get out in to all those freshies. It snowed another 3 cms overnight to bring the base up just a little bit more. The mountains are peeking through this morning, looking like the clouds will dissipate and leave us with a fine bluebird day to enjoy the fresh powder and soft groomed runs. The temperatures were chilly this morning with -2.5 in the valley and -4.5 at 1500 m a.s.l. Winds are calm and things should warm up through the day making the snow on solar aspects a bit heavy. Northerly aspects will stay cool and will make for the best on resort riding.

The forecast is for partialy cloudy skies today and clear tomorrow as this next high pressure rolls through. But this clear weather should only be a fleeting window in the storm to come as there are multiple low pressure systems coming in from the north west sure to bring more great powder with them.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds (50% or more but less than 100% cloud cover)
Temperature: Present: -2.6 C
Maximum: 3.5 C
Minimum: -4.0 C
Wind: Calm - light Northerly
Winds aloft: Light Northerly
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 920 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 3 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 90 cm
Foot penetration: 40 cm
Surface: New snow, size 4 mm
Density of surface snow: ~

Above Tree Line: High

At Tree Line: Considerable

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. Trained "avalanche observers" heard the sound of larger avalanches 2 days ago with the new snow. Some slab avalanches were observed on Easdt and South East aspects yesterday. The buried surface hoar is now even more deeply buried. Historically light to moderate skiing of terrain has proved to have little to moderate effect on controlling a buried surface hoar instability.

Travel Advisory:
Another 3 cm snow accumulated in the valley (and more up high). With settlement there is approximately 30 cm of storm snow (height of storm snow: HST). This is compared with the two days' accumulated HN24 of 42 cm. With the FP (foot penetration) of 40 and more there is obviously lots of snow available for transportation. Winds are light at present but should change as this High presure system comes through and may continue to load lee slopes.

The recent snow is settling quickly, there has been little significant wind, the visibility is improving, the travel will be rather difficult and there are probably pockets of buried surface hoar lurking. Do take extra caution in steep tensioned terrain and be increasingly cautious with solar radiated slopes and warming temperatures.

Sweet Lines.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 29th January 2007, 9:59am
Weather conditions: Fine. Light snow set to begin.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful sunny start to the day this morning in Nozawa. There was a light sprinkling of snow last night but not enough to alter the base depths on the mountain which are still at 180cm on Yamabiko and 135cm at Uenotaira. The temperatures are -5C at present on the mountain and +1C in the village. After the weekend rush there are now very few people on the mountain and plenty of room on the runs.

The forecast is for light snow to begin this morning and to continue until at least Wednesday. There is no wind at present but will pick up this afternoon to up to 15km/h.

Minakami Now!

Monday 29th January 2007, 10:18am
Weather conditions: Cloudy with light snow falling in the upper mountains
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
5 cm of fresh snow at the village level and around 10cm in the upper mountains this morning. The lower half of Minakami towards the interchange is sunnay and warm but it is still snowing in the upper half of Minakami towards Tenjin and Houdaigi ski areas. (This is a very common pattern.)

The forecast is for it to clear later this evening bringing a clear day tomorrow. From Wednesday through to Saturday a new low front is expected to hit Gunma, bringing a decent dump of snow. This should set up great on-piste conditions for the comming weekend.

In the backcountry caution is advised, especially in alpine and tree line areas. The recent warm weather, winds and cool nights have produced a number of unstable layers (there is still some burried suface hoar and wind slabs). Where possible steeper terrain should be avoided especially on Southern and Eastern slopes.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 29th January 2007, 11:05am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning started off fairly cloudy but since then it has brightened up and the sun is out at the moment. There are still some clouds around but it is another fine day here. The forecast that we had for snow this afternoon seems to have changed and only a small chance of anything falling later this afternoon for a short time. After that it is looking like tomorrow will be another fine day as well. We do still have some snowy days lined up from Thursday until Sunday though.

Currently it is +3 degrees outside with only a slight pleasant breeze.

(Please note that GALA Yuzawa is today open as normal).   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The weekend was probably one of the busiest of the season so far.

Clouds moved in later on in the day yesterday and there has been another sprinkling of snow overnight. Earlier on there was a fair bit of blue skies, but more clouds have gathered since lunchtime. According to the forecast there is a chance of snow later on today, but it looks like tomorrow will be fine once again... with more snow lined up from Thursday through the weekend.
