Niseko Now!

Wednesday 29th February 2012, 6:54am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
An early report this morning. We have had a little bit of overnight snow will ensure a good day. There are plenty of fresh patches out there. There is some hiking involved (hint hint) and the snow was amazing yesterday. It's a very light density on top of a settled one. This translates to woohoo snow. You know, the type of snow that when you watch the go pro footage you hear "woohoo". Yesterday we saw a bit of winds and snow falling all day.

It's a great day to get into the backcountry. Take normal cautions and assess all slopes. There may be some stubborn lingerers around there, especially on very steep slopes.

Other than that, it seems like today will be pretty clear after noon and a good day overall. We are expecting some warm weather over the next couple days, so get out while you can. Enjoy!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -3C, slight snowfall in the past 12 hours, total 25cm of crystal snow in 24 hours. Coastal data: SW6m/s at Benkei cape, 1.7m waves and 1022hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: WSW9.2m/s -10.4C.
Snowfall transition: The wind has remained relatively calm. No snowdrifts or cornices development can be observed.
Snowpack: a notable hoar layer has been observed at 115cm (Feb 4th) in 800m Yu no sawa.
Hazard evaluation: The general avalanche risk is low. The snow in the trees has been mostly reset and in good condition. The risk depends on the slope’s orientation, elevation and terrain features. Sometimes skiing stimulations can trigger an avalanche from deeper weak layers in leeward steep slopes. Avalanches are natural phenomena, if no human is involved in it won’t become an accident. Wise evaluation and cautiousness are the only keys to prevent accidents. Better not underestimate the dangers.
Gates: Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30. Listen to the patrol’s advice before stepping out the gates.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud, snow

Snow depth: --
At the time of the report yesterday it was clearing up and sunny. Interestingly, it was quite changeable early on and while it did end up nice and sunny for more of the morning it decided to cloud over and get quite gloomy before doing that. We started getting lots of cloud cover again in the early afternoon. Snow conditions were really quite decent out there actually.

It looks like it was a cloudy night and not too cold but this morning snow has started falling again and actually coming down quite nicely at the moment. Just a slight covering at the moment. Kagura is reporting slight snowfall while up at Naeba they are saying 10cm. The snow isn't forecast to last though. While right now it is 0 degrees, a high of around +5 is forecast today and that snow may well change into sleet (or even worse, but we won't mention the 'r' word as I hope and thing we will avoid it!)

Tomorrow looks like is should be clear and sunny with a high of around 8 degrees. Actually the coming week looks generally pretty mild all the way through.... March isn't going to announce itself with fresh snow, put it that way.

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 29th February 2012, 9:11am
Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is dusting down in Minakami again this morning. Beautiful blue skies of yesterday have been replaced by cloud and it is supposed to snow lightly for the rest of today. It is all change again tomorrow when the sun is set to return.

Conditions are still great out in all resorts with the recent regular top ups of snow ensuring the snow quality is still good in spite of a bit of sun of late. Last day of February and the base is deep all over the mountain.

Sun tomorrow according to the forecast and then it is back to light snow again into the weekend. Higher temperatures into next week and the forecast currently says it might rain on Monday.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 29th February 2012, 9:26am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A fantastic morning out yesterday with clear blue skies. As forecast, it got slightly more overcast looking later on in the day but it stayed clear and sunny and anyone out there won't have been disappointed. After a cloudy night this morning light snow is falling in Hakuba. None of the resorts are reporting any new snowfall officially though Goryu have said a few cm have fallen this morning up top. Not much of a wind at all and it looks like visibility will generally be fine out there.

It is about -2 degrees in the village at the moment, but as the day progresses we will see milder temperatures and a high of around +5 is forecast this afternoon. So this snowfall we have now probably will not last long and will likely clear up this afternoon, and tomorrow looks set to be a clear and sunny day again with a high of perhaps around +7 degrees.

Looking at the forecast for the coming week, there's still not much snow likely to report - it's more a case of clearer, drier conditions and mild temperatures for the most part.

Yesterday it was found the bond between the thaw crust and the subsequent snow strengthening. The crust is still a bit damp and not totally frozen, even after the cold last night. The layers above are settling, densifying, and bonding. It still sluffs, but the only sensitive areas we observed were windloaded spots, and those where the surface was wetting out. Sunny aspects had midday thaw and afternoon sun crust; shady ones still held good snow.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 29th February 2012, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just a bit of snowfall overnight and while it is still snowing now lightly the forecast tells us to expect it to clear up this afternoon as it gets a bit warmer, followed by some fine and clear conditions tomorrow above Naeba.

Looks like Splash Bowl will today be open until 10:30am. I'm not sure for the reasoning behind that, but that's what I am reading here. Will investigate! Other than that it looks like both Naeba and Kagura are open as normal today.

It's not too cold out there and destined to be warmer as the day moves on and there's not much of a wind either. Visibility is fine on lower areas though some of the upper slopes of Naeba are shrouded in cloud.

Perhaps some snow due around Friday but other than that it seems we are due to have continued mild-ish conditions in this part of the world for the coming week or so.

Resort Operations, 29th February (subject to change)
All open apart from Splash Bowl (from 10:30am) and Mens Slalom course.
Open as normal - top Kagura No5 lift now open.

Madarao Now!

Wednesday 29th February 2012, 9:37am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After that yummy start to the day yesterday, later on it did get more kind of cloudy and overcase but stayed dry for the day. We do have some more snowfall to report this morning - just a few cm - though it is actually not as cold as yesterday and right now about -2 degrees.

Tomorrow we will be back to clear and sunny and very likely to see the mercury rise to around +4 or +5 degrees. T-shirt weather! Well, perhaps not quite, but a warm start to March is on the cards. Next snow? Hmmm, perhaps a bit on Friday, but doesn't look like it will be a whole lot. As the forecast stands the weekend looks like it should be fairly clear but early next week we might see stuff falling from the sky that is not snow. Hopefully conditions will change and we can miss that!

All lifts should be open today and all courses open.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 29th February 2012, 10:30am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --

Clear blue skies yesterday and cold temperatures. This morning it is snowing but it is not as cold, just -3 or so here in Marike early on. Not a whole lot yet, perhaps a few cm, but it is coming down nicely at the moment. Cloud is covering most of the mountains at the moment and visibility will be limited out there. Not total whiteout by a long way but there won't be much scenery to enjoy out there today, put it that way.

Looking ahead - sun and clearer skies tomorrow, then some more snow on Friday. Hopefully that will give us a nice new layer for the weekend. Though no heavy snowfall on the horizon over the next week or so.

Zao Now!

Wednesday 29th February 2012, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After the blue skies of yesterday this morning it is a very grey and cloudy start to the day. No wind, just cloudy and a temperature similar to the one we saw yesterday early on. I can see the top of the resort from base.

About the temperature though, the bite of the cold has already eased up and by the end of today it will be a fair bit warmer if the local forecast is to be believed. At the moment the top runs of the resort are saying it is -6 degrees up there. Tomorrow should be sunny and we might see the temperature nudge up into positive numbers at base.

It's the last day for the evening time 'Light Up' gondola operations to the top of the mountain. 7:30pm tonight is your last change to get up there at night.

Myoko Now!

Weather conditions: Cloudy, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is back on again today; just a light fall so far, and a bit gray of a day, but there's good snow (and that monster base), so things are good in Myoko.

Not much more to add, actually, as February is about to end and March (for the last two years an excellent powder month) about to arrive. I think I'm just enjoying a day at the desk after lots of trips up the hills.... Gotta do once in a while, right? Just waiting for the next dump (or a sunny day, actually...)

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 29th February 2012, 12:58pm
Weather conditions: Snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snowing lightly outside my window this morning. A little on the wet side and not making much impact in terms of cm on the ground, but should be showing some dividends up higher. I hear it is even snowing in the Tokyo region today!

Yesterday was the goods on the mountain with fresh snow and clear skies. It was cold too up top, got a bit of a facial headache cruising down to Uenotaira. Have had a few amazing days here with the consistent snow on Monday then the bluebird folks here got to see Nozawa at its best.

Good news on the lost skier a 55-Year-old Japanese snowboarder. He walked out of the wilderness yesterday into one of the little villages well below Nozawa Onsen. Slightly shaken but in not bad condition after his two snowy nights in the Alps.

Further ahead temperatures look set to get a little warm over the next few days but is expected with tomorrow being the first day of March! Not a whole lot of snow, perhaps on Friday, and as the forecast stands now we might see rain early in the week. There's time for that forecast to change though...
