Myoko Now!

Friday 28th March 2008, 8:22am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temps are getting colder and the snowflakes bigger as the cold front settles in a bit more today. It's snowing presently on Myoko with considerable accumulation at Suginohara (the Nagano side is colder). Here at Akakura, the flakes are big and piling up, but expected to get soppy within the next few hours.

Tonight and tomorrow a considerable amount of piling is expected on all fronts, but this morning is a big breath of fresh snow;) making Seki and Suginohara quite fluffy. Again, the afternoon should get soppy again, tomorrow being more February-like.

The pick of the day is Suginohara, with fresh snow all the way down to the bus stop lift area. And, of course, no crowds today.

Your Myoko area levels for today:
230cm (Akakura Kanko Resort);
220cm (Akakura Onsen);
120cm (Ikenotaira);
155cm on the bottom (Suginohara);
250cm (Kyukamura);
490cm (Seki Onsen);
115cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
120cm (Madarao Sympathique);
120cm (Madarao Kogen);
205cm (Myoko Ski Park);

Things did clear up a fair bit yesterday, but then clouded over once again and it was fairly chilly. Kagura reporting another 5cm or so of fresh snow overnight, but nothing down at town level.

This morning it is overcast/cloudy early on with a temperature of around +5 degrees. From later on today the forecast gives us a mix of rain/sleet and maybe snow tonight snow and similar for tomorrow, so lets hope it can keep cold and we might get some snowfall.

Further update coming this evening.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 28th March 2008, 9:16am
Weather conditions: Grey-White sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It felt a bit chilly last night and further this morning it was snowing a little although nothing has really settled, this brings back memories of being a kid and praying for the snow to settle so that maybe a snowball or 2 could be crafted and launched at some unsuspecting object.

The temperature sits just above zero whilst the Naeba hill is shrouded in cloud again today. Expect to see nothing up on the main hill or over in Kagura on such a grey day.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 28th March 2008, 9:28am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Some dark cloud around this morning, at the same time some breaks in the cloud and blue sky showing and at times some very light snow falling slowly... so there's a lot going on this morning with changeable conditions. Temperatures remain low today and are mostly below zero.

Despite the generally fine and relatively warm weather for large parts of March, there is still a lot of snow around with almost 2m in most areas. So things still look good for a fairly long spring season with Yokoteyama planning to be open in some form right through until the end of May. See below for the latest...

Nighta at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen tonight:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Kumanoyu

The following are the current planned closing dates for the resort areas of Shiga Kogen. Of course, these are subject to change depending on the conditions:

Sun Valley, Maruike, Hasuike, Giant:
6th April

Ichinose Family:
Normal operations until 31st March. After that, the Ichinose quad & Ichinose Pair No2 (B) lifts will be running until 6th May.

Open fully until 31st March, then after that part open depending on the day.

Okushiga Kogen:
The resort plans to be open until 6th May.

The resort plans to be open until 6th April and then after that on weekends and holidays until 6th May.

After 6th April, the Number 1 & 2 lifts should be open until 6th May (with other lifts open on holidays). The resort hopes to be open until 11th May.

After 6th April, Yokoteyama No 1,2,3 Sky lifts and Shibutoge No. 1 Romance lift plan to be open until 6th May. After that the resort hopes to be open until the end of May.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 28th March 2008, 9:31am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A very cold morning in Nozawa today, it was below zero in the village for the first time in ages. It looks dry out there, but there could be snow up top. Judging by the webcams it looks like that maybe the case.

Yesterday was a nice day up on the mountain. Visibility was good all over and there was a thin layer of snow on top of the ice burn base. The weather forecast is looking fantastic for early next week, with cold temperatures and heavy snow forecast for Monday and Tuesday. Could this be an April Fools joke?

Hakuba Now!

Friday 28th March 2008, 10:16am
Weather conditions: Rain/Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Precipitation fell last night in the form of snow down to the valley though there was little accumulation and base depth is reduced from yesterday. This precipitation will continue through the weekend and into next week bringing a mixture of rain and some snow in the valley and (hopefully only) snow at altitude. Visibility is limited above 1000m and there is currently no wind to speak of.

There are lots of dirt patches opening up on the skifields meaning lots of fun hits all over the place.

Backcountry travel advisory:

We're seeing real spring conditions with high fluctuations in temperature reaching to around 10 on the plus extreme and plunging down into the negatives at the other. Last night saw the temperature drop and snow down to the valley for the first time in a while. This fresh snow is sitting on the old sliding pack on a mixture of crust and melt-freeze and will come off easily. There was no wind to speak of meaning a fairly even coverage however its possible there were some winds in the Alpine and if so there will be some packing on lee-ward slopes.

There are a lot of protruding rocks, gaping holes, big dirt patches etc. up to fairly high on the mountain, especially on solar aspects, that will have received a light dusting of snow but be very very careful if travelling down these. They don't look like much fun at all. Northern Aspects haven't received quite the hammering but warm temperatures have seen a lot of deprecation of the snow pack, rocks will be protruding, holes and cracks will be forming and fluctuating temperatures will have created crust and melt freeze conditions. Be extremely careful and scope any slopes well in advance before entering any off-piste areas.

Furano Now!

Friday 28th March 2008, 12:00pm
Weather conditions: overcast with thick cloud, fresh snow on upper mountain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A dusting of new snow overnight reminded us here in Furano that it does snow in March. The snow was wet, however at times it was quite heavy and brought a smile to many faces.

Unfortunately this morning none of the fresh snow has settled in town, it has all melted very quickly. Last nights snow was the climax of 9 hours of rain yesterday. The Kitanomine Zone really is limping towards the finish line in terms of snow cover remaining for the last day of the season. After the rain again yesterday, it is "spot the snow patch", rather than "spot the dirt patch".

Still plenty of great spring skiing on the upper mountain for Kitanomine, and the whole Furano Zone. I recommend you don't ski lower than the quad chair on Kitanomine, and you will avoid all the dirt skiing.

Niseko Now!

Friday 28th March 2008, 13:07pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another overcast day here in Niseko, temperatures have fallen over the last couple of days, just 1degrees C at the lift base and -1degrees C at the top of the resort today. Winds are predicted to strengthen throughout the day but at the moment most of the lifts are in operation.
The snow base has been affected down low by the recent rain, it is quite wet and heavy but is holding strong on the top half of the resort.

The freezing level will drop below the village tonight and a light dusting of snow is predicted.
