Geto Kogen Now!
Thursday 28th February 2019, 7:36am
Overcast thin cloud
Yesterday the weather was fine through the day. A fine day to be outside and on the mountain.
No fresh this morning and it is much more of a cloudy/overcast feel to the morning. There is actually a chance of light snow today --- possibly light rain. Hopefully the former. Fingers crossed.
Either probably won't last too long and tomorrow should be dry.

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 28th February 2019, 8:08am
Cloud, fog higher up
Morning from Nozawa.
Light rain early this morning but the resort is actually reporting light snow on the upper Uenotaira and Yamabiko areas. That kind of seems to be what forecasts are saying for the daytime today. It shouldn't be warming up more than around 4-5C at base, but perhaps not cold enough to get into snow at base. But we can hope.
And then tomorrow sun and clearer skies are forecast again.
This last chunk of February has been unseasonably warm and it just feels way too soon for spring to be taking hold. We can just hope that March brings us a few surprises - good ones, please!

Good morning all.
It is of course the last day of February so we have one more month left to go in the season here in Madarao. The official snow depth remains at 270cm and actually the resort itself is saying this morning how there is more snow at the moment than a 'normal/average' year. It seems they are getting people phoning up and asking if there is any snow left and if they are still open. I'm confident they'll be open as planned until the end of March. We might just have to enjoy a particularly long 'spring season', hoping that there might be another blast or two of winter in the meantime.
Today we have light sleet/rain forecast. Might it be snow? Might it be rain? Right now as I write this my friend is telling me it is wet snow falling.
The reason I am talking about what my friend is saying is that I am not in Madarao this morning, but I'll be returning later on. Let's see what happens. I'll let you know tomorrow.
Planned operations for Thursday 28th February 2019
Official snow depth at Madarao:
All lifts apart from Number 5 plan to be open. All 31 courses should be open including tree run courses
Nighta operations at Madarao: - Every Saturday until 23rd March 2019

Here we are everyone, the last day of February.
And I don't have any more fresh snow to add to the reports, leaving us at 198cm for the month and 900cm for the season so far. Just 9cm of observed snowfall at base over the last 12 reports does not sound like late February... I am not sure if I will be able to get my 'monthly report' done today - if I can, I will post it tomorrow. If I can't, it will appear on Monday.
OK so to the current weather. Like I said no new snow this morning after a fine day yesterday with lots of blue sky and just a bit of white clouds in places. Lovely views, decent conditions though obviously not mid-winter powder. As you'd expect them to be without much fresh. Currently -2C at base with a high of around 2-3C forecast for later on.
As we get into March the forecast shows the chance of some (very) light snow here and there but generally clearer conditions continuing.
All areas and lifts should be open as planned this morning. Have a good one!
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain base 6am: -4℃, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: -6.5℃, SSE0.28m/s. Annupuri1120m: 250cm snow depth, 1100m -8.6℃, W5m/s. Hirafu peak: -9℃, 1000m -8.1℃, SW3.2m/s. Mizuno no Sawa base snow depth 148cm. Kutchan weather station: -5.2℃, 151cm snow depth. Benkei cape: SSW2.0m/s, Kamui cape: SW16m/s, 1016hPa, 1.3m waves.
The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the weather is calm, however the wind remains relatively strong in higher elevation. The overall avalanche risk is low. Ask the ski patrol some advice before stepping out of the gates. There is no fresh snow and the slopes are firm. Beware of slipdrops and shallow slides in steep terrains.
The crack under the sub-peak is getting bigger, 80-250cm wide. Glide avalanches could occur due to temperature rise and/or rainfall. Use the ridge route near the creeping pine when hiking up. Thaw is not progressing as much, however the creeks are starting to open, beware of collapsing snow-bridges. The water is ice-cold.
Have a great day.

Yesterday was a day of thin cloud, hardly any wind. Fairly mild. Something like that.
This morning there is some light snow falling on the slopes, and some light rain falling in lower base areas. Light - it's not going to pile up and suddenly give us deep powder. It's currently around 1C and might get a little warmer later on so we'll just have to see how it will develop. And I will let you know.
Sunny clearer skies are forecast for tomorrow.
Ski resort information on Thursday 28th February 2019: The below info is checked manually each morning and believed to be correct at time of report. All ski resorts in the area are currently open. Any further resort specific notes made below.
Cloudy skies this morning with a few spots of rain. I am hoping it will hold off and not rain properly, we might be so lucky. Fingers crossed. Kagura are reporting 'cloud' early morning with 'snow' possible. So even if we do get some light rain in town, it might be snowing higher up. And actually looking at the webcam for Route 17 between Tashiro and Naeba it does look like there is a dusting of snow up there.
Cloudy skies are forecast for tomorrow with no precipitation.
Temperatures both today and tomorrow forecast to get up to around 5C in town.
The Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival) will be held in the central area of town on Saturday (2nd March). There will be things going on between the West Exit of Echigo Yuzawa Station and Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway, with events being held from 6pm until 9pm on the Nunoba area of Yuzawa Kogen resort (close to the Ropeway base station). Hopefully the weather will be good for the event.

Aizu Bandai Now!
Thursday 28th February 2019, 8:58am
Good morning from Urabandai.
Thick clouds above us this morning and it is a bit dark and quiet with not many people around. Private slopes available for the lucky ones!
Just a little snow fell yesterday, but it was just a dusting. The snowfall wasn't as much as expected but the temps are keeping pretty cold so the snow condition is not so bad.
It is a last day of February. Most ski resorts in the Mt. Bandai area will end the season at the end of March but two resorts, Grandeco and Nekoma will keep going until early May - if they can, it will depend on the snow situation of course.
In addition, Nekoma will be open daily again from tomorrow.
Still lots more chance to explore this area. Have fun!
The photos for today are from Alts Bandai (the first two) and Grandeco.

Shiga Kogen Now!
Thursday 28th February 2019, 9:05am
Good morning from Shiga Kogen.
And I actually have some good news. It's snowing! It may be raining lower down but up here we have some snow flakes coming down - and actually really nicely as of 9am.
That is good to see on this last day of February. And it has been a strange February with some really unseasonal conditions with locals making that comment being the topic of the day.
I can even put 2cm on the report and hopefully there will be more to report come tomorrow (when clearer skies are likely).
Shiga Kogen resort info: Thursday 28th February 2019
The below information is manually checked for each report. Official snow depth numbers are as reported by the ski resorts themselves.
I wouldn't expect a huge amount but any is welcome; by tomorrow the clouds will probably be cleared and we'll see more of the sun.
The third image below shows snow on the Route 17 road - this is the section between Tashiro Ropeway of Kagura and Naeba.
Official snow depth:
All lifts plan to be operating apart from the following (some lifts rested on weekdays):
- Prince Number 1 gondola - Number 8 high speed lift - Daishamen romance pair lift

Thursday 28th February 2019, 9:41am
Missed report yesterday as I was too busy carving ice turns at Hodaigi. Been wondering what the weather would deliver all week and turns out its rain here at the base of Tenjindaira, rain in town down in Minakami and I heard about 9am that clouds were looking threatening at Hodaigi. The only positive to take out of this is that Tenjin has reported 5cm of snow up top and given the temps (pretty cold), it should still be snowing up there.
The forecast is for light snow or snow showers going forward at 1500m though Saturday is looking clear which will be nice for those racing in the 9th annual Tenjin banked slalom. The course is insane this year (should have taken a photo) and those who don't bring their A game are going to get bucked off that thing in short order. Read more ...

Gray with rain
It's not so good out here in Myoko today, but not that bad in a sense, either. There is wet stuff falling from the sky, but very lightly at the moment (it was raining fairly hard with some wet snow mixed in earlier this morning). It's fairly bright, too, so not as gloomy as it could be. Pretty foggy up on the hill, but it's not so bad from base up to halfway up the mountain.
It could well be snowing at the top of the resort and up the hill, but there's not a lot ahead on the forecast to make much new snow possible.
The freezing line is going to stay around 1000 meters and up, so it's going to stay mild if not warm for the near future.
