Snow and weather reports posted on Saturday 30th May 2020

The national news last night was all about heavy snow and crazy wind conditions in Hokkaido with lovely scenes of people shovelling snow and some others battling with their umbrellas in the wind. Unfortunately, that heavy snow wasn't in this region and there's less snow on the ground now than there was this time yesterday - see the webcam image photo below as evidence. Higher up visibility is low but whether that is just cloud/fog or snow falling up there, I don't know.
It just isn't keeping as cold as we want it to be and with some sleet early morning and actually rain at the moment at base, obviously this is not doing the remaining snow on the ground any favours. Kutchan is due a high of around +6C degrees later on today.
So it looks like for the day today we are going to have to put up with some wet conditions along with at times quite strong winds.
The Niseko Annupuri resort area was planning to join the party and get some lifts moving from tomorrow (Saturday 28th), but yesterday they also announced that it won't be possible to open as planned. Niseko Grand Hirafu surely won't be able to do anything tomorrow either.
Everyone is on standby now. Lots of folk who will be working in the area have been arriving in numbers the last week or two as well as people hoping to enjoy the early season. Let's hope they can get those turns in fairly soon. It's a waiting game for now though.
Planned opening dates for the Niseko resorts:
Niseko Grand Hirafu: as soon as there's enough snow Niseko Annupuri: as soon as there's enough snow Niseko Village: Tuesday 1st December Niseko HANAZONO: Saturday 5th December
'Nighta' should be starting on Saturday 12th December Read more ...
Shiga Kogen Now!
Friday 27th November 2015, 9:01am
Blue sky and sunny, some cloud
A very cold morning here in Shiga Kogen... minus 10 on the thermometer earlier on.
Snow machines in a few areas are working hard to try and help things get started but a morning westerly wind isn't helping.
For the moment, it's cold but sunny with just a bit of cloud in the sky. That's not what the forecast has down for the day though with a promise of the chance of snowfall.
There is no new snowfall to report I'm afraid this morning, not even up at Kagura by the looks.
And the sun is out! There's some cloud around up there, but blue sky as well. Actually quite a nice morning.
Yesterday also started with some unexpected sunshine but conditions did get gloomier and worse as we entered the afternoon.
The local forecast is still for rain all day today - with snow possible at Kagura - but for the moment the rain clouds are giving our valley a miss and tracking to the north. Looks like they will be moving in though by around lunchtime and we can hope for a slight drop in temperatures as well (please). It is currently 6C. Similar conditions are on the forecast for tomorrow, though perhaps we might miss out on this early morning sun.
For keen folk wanting to try out the snow-mat fun up at Kagura Mitsumata, 1 day lift tickets are 3500 yen for adults, 3200 yen for seniors and 2900 yen for junior and senior high school students. The car park is apparently free this weekend. There is also a shuttle bus available from the East Exit of Echigo Yuzawa Station (note that the bus previously left from the West Exit of the station). Until 11th December the buses at 7:50am, 8:45am, 9:55am and 11:10am and the journey costs 380 yen for adults and 190 yen for children.
Planned opening dates for resorts in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City (by date):
Currently part open: Kagura (Mitsumata) - 1100m course at Mitsumata open with snow mats - no natural snow to ski on yet
Very cloudy and a bit gloomy. Fog around plus low cloud.
Gluggy, sleety, wet, cold and overcast today.
It's a gluggy day. Gluggy snow has been falling (intermittent with a bit of dry snow and a bit of actual rain) since at least 6am, when our observations began.
The ONLY reason this is not entirely miserable, is that Furano's resort actually needs a wet snow base to hold on to the dry snow of the season. Without a wet base it quite simply blows off, down the hill, across the river, and into Furano town when an alpine gust gets blowy mid season.
But that silver lining doesn't make it any nicer to walk through the slush right now. Ankle deep in places.
The immediate future has cause for lightening up, as it is forecast to get cold again tonight (was a balmy 1C when I woke up today), and fresh snow is forecast for the morning.
But you know, it's the weather. So as ever, we shall see.
Bursts of breeze but basically still today.
It's a very grey day.
Photo 1 is a very cold, wet, glug inundated resort. Photo 2 is glug in action.
The resort has announced the inevitable - it won't be able to open tomorrow as originally planned and from now we'll all just have to be on stand-by waiting for enough snow to get the ski lifts moving.
Zannen-nasu, as they say!
The courses up on Yamabiko are sadly looking bare once again, and the trees up there have a cool frosty-look thing going on.
And that's where we are at the moment really.
The local forecast talks of more cloud this afternoon and rain, possibly sleet and possibly some snow overnight down to near base.
Fresh snow to report since yesterday (reported by resort):
No 'cm' to log in the report yet for village level but yesterday afternoon Hakuba 47 were reporting 15cm of snowfall up by the Line C lift at 1450m elevation. Happo-one was yesterday reporting up to 20cm of snow on upper areas.
It's keeping pretty cold at the moment too and temperatures aren't likely to rise much above zero point today.
The forecast is looking pretty encouraging over the next 24 hours, so I'll leave you for now and post an update tomorrow morning - hopefully with some good snow news.
Hello from Naeba where the day started off sunny with some blue skies as well, though it looks like it is clouding over now which is what we were expecting today.
Hopefully it will be snowing later on, though it's going to be a battle with temperatures as it's not quite as cold as we'd like it to be.
The snow machines are still working on building up snow on the course by the base here in Naeba, of course by the time Naeba plans to open on 12th December fingers crossed there'll be natural snow to play in.
Kagura Mitsumata remains open with the snow-mats for now.
Planned resort opening dates:
Naeba: Saturday 12th December Kagura (Mitsumata Ropeway): Mitsumata area now open using snow-mats (no natural snow yet) Kagura (Tashiro Ropeway): Saturday 12th December Read more ...
