Minakami Now!

Saturday 27th January 2007, 7:28am
Weather conditions: Clear skies becoming cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After cloudy skies and light snow falling last night the skies have cleared this morning revealing a blue sky day with around 5-10cm of fresh snow and a very light breeze. It looks like it may cloud over again during the day and there may be pacthes of snow in the upper muntains especially towards Tenjin.

The visibility and on-piste snow conditions should be great at all ski areas in upper Minakami with the new snow from last night. People entering the backcountry should exercise considerable caution with wind and sun crusts being present under the new snow, skier/snowboarder trigerred avalanches are possible on steeper faces.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 27th January 2007, 9:15am
Weather conditions: Overcast to obscured (fog)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

This morning it is "Situation Normal: Snowing Hard". It has been snowing at a rate of 3 centimetres accumulation an hour since early this morning. At 0700 hrs. at the Hira Kawa Station there was 17 cm of new snow (HN). The forecast is for this to continue throughout the day with a bit of an increase in intensitity at mid-day. The visibility is very limited and the air is humid so spare pair of goggles would be a clever thing to bring along. The driving is a bit slick so feather those brakes long before the intersection. The wind was dead calm this morning in the valley floor. The Happo One Lift Company ski-patrol report that there is no wind at the top of their terrain and everything is in a cloud. It might be handy to ski beside the fence-lines and trees at the edges of the runs so as to have some reference in the fog.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Obscured (in fog)
Temperature: Present: 0.0 C
Maximum: 3.0 C
Minimum: -8.0 C
Wind: Calm
Winds aloft: not visible
Precipitation: S 3 (snowing at the rate of 3 cm per hour accumulation)
Barometer and trend: 913 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 17 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 81 cm
Foot penetration: 28 cm
Surface: rimed new snow, size 2.0 mm
Density of surface snow: 80 kg/cubic metre

Above Tree Line: High

At Tree Line: High

Below Tree Line: Considerable

N.B. The Happo One Lift Company ski-patrol reports no winds at the upper elevations of their terrain. Also there is poor visibility. The underlying snow is well faceted on the northerly aspects and sun and wind effected on the southerly aspects.

Travel Advisory:
With this 17 cm of HN and snowing hard in the valley things have changed from yesterday. The considered wisdom is that natural avalanches above tree line could be common but they probably won't tend to run too far. Still it will be smart to know what is above you, be it terrain or other parties (groups of 15 people have been observed often in the terrain above the Happo One Lift company terrain). Below this new snow is the faceted snow from the past cold, clear nights. Don't forget the buried surface hoar that is lurking in spots here and there.

The storm is forecast to increase in intensity around mid-day. If (when) the wind does pick-up there is lots of snow to move around and with the high humidity it should form slabs of various hardnesses readily.

Niseko Now!

Saturday 27th January 2007, 9:15am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday remained mostly clear. The cloud cover moved away to bring periods of long clear spells. Last night it started snowing heavily around 5pm but unfortunately this didn't last. This morning there has been a dusting of 1-2cms of some fine grainy snow.

Currently it is overcast with a light wind in the village. Up high the visibility will be poor and the winds moderate. During the day the wind should ease but it will remain overcast with the odd snow shower.

We can expect some sunshine over the next few days as Sunday and Monday are forecast to be mostly clear with light winds. However looking at the longer range forecast by mid next week the snow will return.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 27th January 2007, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow/rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning. A cloudy morning early on and there is no new cms of snow to report this morning at town level. Kagura is reporting snow falling early on. There has been some very light snow falling on and off lower down, but with the mild temperature at the moment (+3C) it is unlikely that we can expect much today with just cloud forecast for this afternoon. There are actually spots of rain falling just to the north in Minamiuonuma, so we'd all like that to clear up I'm sure.

GALA Yuzawa is closed again today, and they are offering to take people with special tickets/packs for Gala to other resorts in the town.

Looking at the forecast for tomorrow, it looks like tomorrow morning will probably be fine with a chance of snow clouds moving in later on and into Monday.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 27th January 2007, 9:46am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good news this morning, the snow clouds are back and in the process of giving us a topup. The numbers are not reflected in the snow depth numbers above yet but there's 5cm or so of snow on the car this morning. Low clouds mean that visibility is not good, so care is needed. This morning it's not actually as cold as it has been in recent days, just -3 outside at the moment! That might sound cold (and it is!) but not what we are used to here.

It's the weekend and so there is a fair bit of nighta to choose from tonight - with floodlit slopes open tonight at the following resort areas:

Sun Valley
Ichinose Family
Ichinose Diamond

Hope you have a good weekend.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 27th January 2007, 10:17am
Weather conditions: grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's snowing, quite heavily too, It started fluttering down last night about 10:00pm. The temperature is -1 in the village, with poor visibility on the mountain - Naeba not visible from Asagai.

We've only had 7cm down here in the village - probably because of the warm temperature, a wet snow so it has formed quite a heavy pack. Excellent for snow balls - as the punters proved in their drunken horsing around last night!

Expect plenty of the white stuff up on the mountain - you'll be up to your knees at least in Kagura and off of the top lifts at Naeba this weekend!!

Not bad!

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 27th January 2007, 10:25am
Weather conditions: Overcast/ light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A misty start to the day in Nozawa today. A smattering of snow last night means the runs won’t be icy or too hard packed this morning. The skies have cleared somewhat in the last hour and visibility on the mountain is currently quite good.
The revised base depths are 175cm on Yamabiko and 135cm at Uenotara. The lower reaches of the resort and the village has between 40cm and 80cm. The temperatures on the mountain are -3C at Yamabiko and -4C over at Uenotaira. The village is +1C.

The outlook is for light snow to continue on and off for the next three days with a total of around 15cm to fall. Winds may be as high as 35km/h.

Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --

Just a dusting of snow in the last 24 hours and the wind has really picked up today. The Kitanomine gondoa was closed this morning due to high winds. Its a beautifull clear day but not such a good day to be up on the mountain, unfortunately. Good day for sightseeing or shopping.

This evening there is a free tea ceremony near the Kitanomine gondola station (organised by the tourist information) and all recent arrivals can get a free beer in the Ice Bar.
