Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 27th February 2007, 6:49am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Fine weather all yesterday, with temperatures actually rising to around +8 degrees at town level during the day with a mild breeze appearing later in the day.

Today is starting off with similar weather conditions once again, though maybe not as cold as it was yesterday afternoon. Early on this morning there are no clouds in the sky and the forecast is for fine sunny weather all day and it might be warmer than it was yesterday.

Snow to be with us tomorrow? There is a chance, so fingers crossed for that.

Later update:

Another very mild day with temperatures rising into double figures earlier this afternoon.... there will definitely have been some more snow melting today.

We have rain forecast for very late tonight, but hopefully soon that will turn into snow and it looks reasonable to expect some white tomorrow morning with snow forecast throughout the day.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is overcast and looking like it could snow at any minute here this morning. There was no snow overnight and the temperature was -11 at 8am this morning. The forecast is giving snow all day from around 10am and then an overcast day tomorrow, clearing up again on thursday.

Conditions on the mountain have been better than expected considering the weather over the last week, the groomers are doing a good job of keeping the slopes smoothe and ice-free.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 27th February 2007, 8:50am
Weather conditions: Clear.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another crystal clear day in Nozawa this morning. Yesterday was an awesome day with great views, low winds and very few people on the slopes. The runs up top were all well covered and not too hard packed, but most everywhere off piste was well tracked out by the weekend crowds. Down low as the afternoon warmed up patches started to show through again. Temperatures are -6C at Yamabiko and -9C at Uenotaira. Winds are low but will rise as the weather sets in this afternoon.

The outlook is for snow to begin to fall this afternoon and continue all day Wednesday. Up to 25cm is expected. Winds may get as high as 30km/h on Wednesday afternoon and evening. Thursday will clear up.

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 27th February 2007, 9:08am
Weather conditions: Scattered clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A thin wisp of cloud marred the otherwise perfect blue vaulted sky this morning. It froze well overnight (see: "Crust" below) but the early morning temperature was merely -1.5 C. With a forecast high of 11 C the lower elevation, especially those effected directly by the sun should soften up soon. Light winds from the west should cool your sweaty brow and there is no precipitation in the forecast until tomorrow morning.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Few clouds (less than 50 % cloud cover)
Temperature: Present: -1.5 C
Maximum: 15.0 C
Minimum: -5.0 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: Light from the west
Barometer and trend: 926 hPa and falling
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 61 cm
Foot penetration: 0 cm
Surface: Melt freeze crystals that have faceted slightly, size 4.0 mm
Density of surface snow: not measured
Crust: 22 cm
Cloud ceiling: very high

Above tree line: Moderate

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. . With good crust development overnight we are rating the 'below tree line' hazard as "low".

Travel Advisory:
Once again the sun shines. There is "good" skiing to be had around and below tree line where the wind and sun have not effected the snow.

There has been a vague story of a person being involved in an avalanche above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain on the 25th of February. There were no details as to aspect, elevation, failure plane, etc. But the area was fairly busy that day.

Wisdom of history shows that if you get enough people covering enough area and there is a "button" to push to start an avalanche there is a very good chance that it will get pushed. In the mechanized backcountry skiing industry (helicopter and snow-cat) we learned to our chagrin the folly of repeatedly overusing the terrain, i.e. farming a given slope wall to wall.

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 27th February 2007, 9:11am
Weather conditions: Building cloud.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday would have to be the clearest day I have experienced in Niseko. There wasn't a cloud in the sky all day. The views from the summit were fantastic, with the Sea of Japan visible over the back. The snow condition up high was also pretty good. Although a bit icy and wind blown around the summit and largely tracked there are still some nice pockets of fresh snow. On the groomers it was hard and fast conditions yesterday.

It was a mostly clear night but it is starting to cloud up a bit now. The weather should get steadily worse and snow is forecast this morning. It should get heavier during the day and continue into the night. The visibility will be poor up high and variable lower down, however the wind will remain light-moderate on the mountain.

Tomorrow the snow may ease and the wind is expected to increase.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 27th February 2007, 10:04am
Weather conditions: Clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another beautiful sunny day in Minakami with warm temperatures forecast (10 deg C) for midday and a current temperature of 6 deg C. No wind at all today and not a cloud in the sky.

Tomorrow there is a full day of snow forecast which is much needed at the lower ski areas as the ground is starting to show through. The weather from Thursday on is forecast to warm up even further as the oncomming of Spring is starting.

There is still some decent snow and even some powder to be found at higher altitudes but extreme caution is advised for those accessing the backcountry at present because of multiple weak layers in the snow pack and a number of recent avalanches.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 27th February 2007, 11:09am
Weather conditions: clear, getting cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blue skies again this morning, though there's a grey merging of high white cloud which appears to be some kind of weather change. There's not much of a wind on at the moment and the temperature is a scorching 6 degrees, feels like spring.

Dai ichi Gondola is meandering up the hill, over the 1st ridge & challenge course - up to the top, expect more good views to the East from up there, West is where the grey is coming from.

Icy conditions yesterday, a messy half-pipe in Asagai and some icy patches all over the Naeba gelande. Expect more icy horrors on the Naeba night ski tonight as todays temperatures will create a thicker bed of moisture to freeze during tonights temperature drop.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 27th February 2007, 13:55pm
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is more of the same again today as the mild, sunny and spring like weather in the region continues. The normally iced up roads are clearing up. Snow conditions are generally holding up fairly well and one good thing about the weather is the maginificent views on offer - we are not used to having so many chances of seeing them in a season. But it would be really nice to get a huge dump of fresh snow though! ...Temperatures look set to drop later on today though and there is a good chance of snow overnight and into tomorrow.

(Please note that unfortunately we will not be able to post a report from Shiga Kogen tomorrow and so the next report will be posted here as normal on Thursday morning. Sorry for the disruption).   Read more ...
