Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 27th February 2003, 8:14am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday's evening rain turned into snow soon and at least at the top area the temperatures are cold enough to guarantee good powder. It might not be enough snow to cover the icy bumps underneath though. Overall it's not looking bad today.   Read more ...

As this correspondent was about to sleep last night, it was raining heavily. But onto the good news... Temperatures dropped overnight, luckily, and we now have snow falling and about 10cm at town level (more on the slopes) so far. The snow is coming down well right now and if it can continue like this for the whole day, we should get some good cms. Let it snow!   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snow > clearing clouds later?

Snow did arrive and gave us another 10-15cm or so overnight. Lunchtime now and it's snowing lightly but the clouds seem to be breaking up and it is getting brighter so may even see the sun later on in the day.

Nice conditions to ride in though - time to get out there again!   Read more ...

15cm+ of new snow overnight, and sunshine this morning. Mid morning a new weather front came into effect, bringing more snow, and conditions are now fluctuating between snow and sun. Air temperature is milder today, reading -2C at the base of the hill, and -9C towards the top. As a result, snow quality on the lower half of the resort is heavier.

Bottomless, fluffy turns off the top lifts, Hana 3 and Tetsu's.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 27th February 2003, 13:15pm
Weather conditions: Cold, foggy, some snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow has returned! Up to 20-25cm in places at 47 this morning. Visibility is very poor above the gondola top station, and some snow is still coming down. The halfpipe there has also been reshaped.

Hakuba hit the headlines yesterday when mid-afternoon TV announced that there had been a "large avalanche" in the backcountry above Happo and that two snowboarders were missing. A police helicopter was scrambled, but the searchers came to the eventual conclusion that no-one must have been buried. The local paper today reports that a witness saw one of two snowboarders trigger the slide, but that the avalanche itself was only 10-15cm deep, so that in the absence of other dangers it would not have been so difficult to ride it out to the side. It is not clear why the alarm was raised.   Read more ...
