Weather conditions: clear

No change despite the sun as temperatures stayed below freezing from top to bottom yesterday. A strong bit of sunshine, though, is expected to do some melting on the snow that'll be taking a beating before the big snows pile over it this weekend and beyond.

Conditions for now are alright at the top of Suginohara and at Seki Onsen, but until the 29th, not much is to be expected snow-wise.

Niseko Now!

Thursday 27th December 2007, 9:08am
Weather conditions: Cloudy.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is nothing much new to report about yesterday, it was another sunny day devoid of snowfalls. The weather was fine but quite chilly and the snow levels have dropped.

The charts are still showing a low moving in from the south west on friday or saturday with a front of moisture coming in about the same time. Of course, this may or may not eventuate but it is something to hope for.

The avalanche report shows a low risk today but warns of poor cover outside the resort. Visibility is quite poor this morning so take care on the hill.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: bluebird. chilly morning.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow last night. As the local saying goes, it was just too cold to snow last night. Temps over night as low as minus 25 in the village were bone chilling. The night of clear skies meant that all the heat was able to escape. Non-double glzed doors and windows were frozen on the inside last night it was so cold.

The last few days have been the most perfect viewing days, but from tomorrow it is expected to cloud up again and snow for the new year.

The groomed runs are of the highest quality at the moment, with Giant course on the kitanomine side long, steep and fast.

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 27th December 2007, 10:18am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is out and blue skies all around this morning in Yuzawa. It's about 5 degrees at the moment and looks like it should be another relatively warm day in the region.... almost like spring skiing weather.

With the last few days of milder weather and no new snowfall, we are in real need of snow - especially the resorts in the town area. While the higher up resorts have good cover, the lower slopes of resorts at town level are looking increasingly bare at the moment and are either struggling to be open or bottom runs closed.

The good news is that snow looks to be on the way - with snow currently forecast from late Saturday through Wednesday. So hopefully it will be dumping over the New Year holidays.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 27th December 2007, 10:26am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a stunner of a day in Nozawa today. The sun is shining and the skies are blue.

There is no new snow. The forecast for the weekend is not looking as good as it was before, with rain on Saturday morning up to the top. After that should be good though with snow for the next four days.

The town is starting to get busier with plenty of Japanese skiers and snowboarders coming in for the New Years holidays.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 27th December 2007, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow to report this morning and the sun is out and bright blue skies all around - it looks like it will be a beautiful day. It is colder than it has been the last few and conditions earlier on this morning at Okushiga were really good.

Pretty much most of the resort area is now open, with most courses skiable - just one or two of the steeper slopes still not able to open.

While conditions are holding up fairly well but we still haven't got huge amounts yet and a big fresh dump of powder would be most welcome. It is looking promising that we might be able to expect that over the weekend and into next week - fingers crossed for a snowy New Year.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 27th December 2007, 11:00am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another clear blue sky day today as Japan is covered by a large area of high pressure. Clear skies last night meant temperatures dropped to -12 over night at the valley level, so a thick frost covered the ground this morning.

Tomorrow an occluded front starts to move in from the South bringing precipitation and slightly warmer air. This may mean rain for lower levels but should be snow above 1000m. This front continues to Saturday after which a new system is forecast to push in from Russia brning cold temperatures and lots of snow. So new years should be good on the slopes.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 27th December 2007, 11:05am
Weather conditions: Blue Skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful day today, the sun is out with not a cloud to be seen around these parts.

It's -3 in the shade but much more in the sun and will be quite warm today. There's no wind either today so expect to sit around outside if you can - pick the lunch places with a terrace and you'll be sure to feel like you're in Europe, get up to the top of the hill and the view will be very nice indeed.

Here's praying for this weekends snow fall.

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 27th December 2007, 11:12am
Weather conditions: Blue Skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another bluebird day today. From the echoland base the sound of a military fleet preparing for takeoff could be heard from last night through to the early hours and those in the know knew the Happo snow-makers were out in full force...a depressing sound at this time of year.

Groomed runs and spring-like conditions today. Bottom runs are showing rocks and some dirt poking through and looking up from the bottom even the higher slopes are looking sparse under lifts and so on.

Snow is forecast from Friday through to next week, so lets hope it dumps!

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Spring-like conditions today and relatively warm temperatures after a chilly morning we've seen a rise from -4 at 8:30 to +1 up top now. Nice day for hiking but as always go with an equipped experienced educated team and assess snow stability before dropping in, especially those lee slopes, and watch solar aspects as the day progresses. Still those huge unstable cornices to be careful of.
