Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 27th April 2006, 8:37am
Weather conditions: Overcast, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's another overcast morning. There were a few spots of rain falling earlier on but that has cleared up for now and the forecast for the day is a mix of cloud and rain. Mornings are still fairly cold (around 3 degrees at 6am), which is a good thing especially for morning conditions on the slopes that are still open. It will probably only rise to around 11 degrees this afternoon.

Tomorrow looks set to be a fine day, with another cloud/rain day lined up for Saturday... more on that tomorrow.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 27th April 2006, 10:01am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba lies under cloudy skies today and there was a slight drizzle this morning. A high cloud bank is covering the upper peaks today so it may be skiing in a bit of a fog until it burns off. Presently sitting at 5 degrees C at the base and 3 degrees up top. Snow should be soft and slushy today... great for late season carving.

Sunshine hitting southern slopes yesterday had been creating multiple risks, including Size 2 loose avalanches. And now with more weight on it from the new snow, will not help the situation. Use caution when traversing under southern slopes. New snow ranges from 0cm to 65-70cm in wind-scoured areas and now increasing again. Generally loose slides are in the upper twenty centimetres of the new snow.

Natural avalanches possible, human-triggered avalanches probable. Be increasingly cautious in steep terrain.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 27th April 2006, 10:53am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning many of the local residents turned out to have a clean up of the village. A couple of hours later and things are looking much better. This was probably in preparation for Golden Week which is one of the main holidays of the year for Japanese. It's estimated that around 62% of Japanese travel during Golden Week. That's over 70 million people heading off to enjoy the spring weather. Not the best week really to be travelling in Japan as the roads, planes and trains are all packed and most hotels booked out.

Next week should see the first cherry blossom 'Sakura' come out in Hokkaido. Up here in Niseko the sakura probably won't make an appearance until around the 15th of May. Hopefully by then most of the snow will have gone from the village. Can't wait for some colour in the landscape again after 6 months of snowcover.

The weather yesterday remained fine and partly cloudy. This morning is mostly cloudy and looks like there may be some rain later. The forecast though has most of the rain passing south of us. The conditions on the mountain remain pretty good with the best snow up high. Temps are very mild but should cool a little tomorrow.    Read more ...
