Naeba Now!

Monday 26th November 2012, 9:12am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
It is a cloudy start to the day in the region, though rain is on the forecast and quite likely as well and some fairly strong winds.

For these weekdays at the moment Kagura will just be running the Kagura No 1 quad lift, enough with less people than over the weekend, but the same courses will be open - the main Kagura course (1500m), Giant course (1500m) and Technical course (600m). Mostly suited to intermediates and not really recommened for beginners, as the resort themselves say.

The Ropeway will be moving from 8am until 5pm.

That's the plan for today until Friday anyway.

Weather forecast? Rain at base today and hopefully snow higher up, very cold tomorrow but clearing up later on and then a few days of clearer weather conditions is likely.

I'll update you in a few days with more news.

Official resort snow depth:
Kagura - 70cm

Planned opening dates:
Kagura (Tashiro) on December 8th
Naeba on December 8th   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 26th November 2012, 9:44am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 5cm
Snow depth: 125cm
Yesterday was a beauty and actually, on a personal note, my first slide of the season. That first time is just the best isn't it. With the new snow to play in, perhaps 15cm or more higher up, conditions were really good out there and the clear weather that opened up really added to it all, giving us some fine views of the surrounding mountains.

On to today... after those few days of very cold conditions, it's somewhat milder this morning. The temperature is above zero, currently around 2 degrees. Overnight around 5cm of snow has fallen, a somewhat wetter variety than we have had until now. It's a much more cloudy and misty start to the day, though it has been lifting even as I write this and I can gradually see more of the slopes now. (Clouds covering the mountain once again a few minutes later!)

As I reported yesterday there's a chance of some rainfall today especially in lower areas, though hopefully it will be falling as snow higher up. Fingers crossed. The good news is that we can expect snow overnight and perhaps a decent load to be deposited on the mountains as well. It might be a bit wild with some very strong winds forecast tomorrow morning, so much so that it might well affect lift operations.

Looking beyond tomorrow though and the forecast is looking promising with changes of snow pretty much every day through into the weekend.

Lifts currently operating in Niseko:

Grand Hirafu - Ace No2 Quad (Center Four) and Ace No3 Pair lifts.
Annupuri - Gondola and Jumbo No3 pair lift.

8 hour lift tickets are 2000 yen for adults and 1000 yen for children and seniors, these special prices are valid until Friday 30th November.

Hirafu now have 7 courses open and 4300m of skiable area. Look for more to open as we get more snow. Word has it that the Ace Family pair should be opening on Saturday. We shall see.

Until tomorrow!

Hakuba Now!

Monday 26th November 2012, 9:58am
Weather conditions: Cloud cover
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 30cm
After all that sun and lovely views, we're on to rain this morning. It's a bit of a miserable wet Monday morning really, rather dark and somewhat gloomy! What a contrast.

Goryu and 47 remain open as they have been and Happo-one remains open but a bit less than over the weekend. Now at Happo-one we have the Usagidaira and Kurobishi courses open.

Right now the temperature in village is around 3 degrees with a high of around 8 degrees forecast for later on.

OK so now the better news! As the day progresses it should get colder and enough for it to hopefully be snowing later on - at least on the mountains. After that a few days of clearer conditions again but look to perhaps Saturday for the next decent chance of snowfall.

It seems the seasonal change can't quite properly settle down just yet...

Resorts currently part open & operating lifts:

Happo-one:
Gondola
Usagidaira pair
Kurobishi No2 quad

Hakuba Goryu:
Gondola
No1 pair lift

Hakuba 47:
Lline E lift (access via Goryu)

Tsugaike Kogen:
Gondola
Hannoki pair   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Monday 26th November 2012, 10:12am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: 10cm
Snow depth: 70cm
The new week has been welcomed in by a nice dump of new snow. The village has received 10cm overnight and we expect even more to have fallen up on the mountain. This is different snow than the regular light Furano powder, having a higher moisture content, and is exactly what is needed to help bulk up the base on the lower mountain. More snow is forecast for today and tomorrow. Early season is looking great.

Furano Ropeway is open 8:30-14:40 for access to the upper mountain and the skiable lift is Furano Romance lift #2 open 8:45-15:00. At the moment the skiing is restricted to the upper mountain and to return to base it is necessary to use Furano Ropeway.
