Yuzawa Now!

Monday 26th March 2007, 9:19am
Weather conditions: Hazy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday it was a misty and rain day for most of the daytime, with the rain clearing up late afternoon. This morning it is cloudy/hazy and about 6 degrees at 9am. The forecast is for a fine day so it may well clear up soon but for now it looks like it is going to be more cloudy than sunny.

The rain and temperatures of the weekend did their business on the snow and a fair few patches of brown on lower slopes of resorts at town level have now appeared.

So the question everyone is asking is - will we get more snow this season? Well, the forecast for the coming week is a mix of cloud/rain/sun with temperatures rising to double figures most days and so it is looking unlikely in the coming days - especially down at at town level.... higher resort areas might get lucky. But it is probably safe to say that we are unlikely to get any more heavy snowfalls. (Having said that people were saying that a few weeks ago before we got that much needed topup). So we can just hope!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 26th March 2007, 9:20am
Weather conditions: Cloud and fog
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

Overnight there was no freeze at the lower elevations but above 1,400 m a.s.l. it probably froze a bit. the forecast is for a clearing trend toward the afternoon, a high of 11C in the valley with light winds from the west to north-west. At higher elevations the wind will probably be more in the "moderate" range. There is presently light showers in the valley. The lower areas of the Happo One Lift Company terrain is patchy for snow cover and lifts on the lower portion of the mountain are closed now.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: 4.0 C
Maximum: 2.0 C
Minimum: 11.5 C
Wind at surface: Very light from the west
Winds aloft: Light from the west
Precipitation: Raining
Barometer and trend: 912 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 40 cm
Water: 6 mm
Foot penetration: 1 cm
Surface: melt freeze crystals , 6 mm crystals, wet
Density of surface snow: not observed
Crust: 10 cm
Cloud ceiling: down to 1,200 to 1,400 m a.s.l.

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Considerable

Below tree line: Considerable

N.B. The hazard is heavily dependent on the degree of day-time warming and wind transport of any available snow(at higher elevations where it has not gone through a crust forming air temperature (as opposed to a direct solar created melt freeze)rise and fall).

Travel Advisory:
With a suspected moderate freeze above 1,400 m a.s.l. there are probably pretty good travel conditions (i.e. low ski penetration). Right now visibility in the main range is limited above 1,500 m a.s.l. With the forecast clearing and temperatures the hazard, especially in the isothermal snow pack will increase throughout the day. The cornices have not increased appreciably in strength so be aware of the threat from above, especially when you can't see it.    Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 26th March 2007, 9:35am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The rain was with us a fair bit yesterday and so you'll see the snow depths at most resorts taking a bit of a hit today, as will the conditions of the snow. However it cleared up in the afternoon and it looks like today should be fine.

It is happily colder than it was yesterday with the temperature here just under 0 at the moment and hopefully it won't warm up too much during the day.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Monday 26th March 2007, 9:54am
Weather conditions: grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is out this morning, there's a gusty light breeze and it's a whopping 6 degree today. Things are looking a little spring like around here. The visibility looks good up on the mountain and we're definitely going to have wet botties today if we do any sitting around in the snow.

There's still plenty of base at Naeba and Kagura though, definitely a few more weeks (probably a month !) of sliding possible. So maybe think about putting your 'fresh powder day' snobbery on the shelf and getting up there and enjoying the fresh air and stunning views while there is still 'sliding possibility!'

Minakami Now!

Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful Spring day in Minakami with a warm current temperature of 12 deg C and a light Easterly breeze. The rest of the week looks like more of the same, sunny days and warm weather. This is not good for the snow but Tanjindaira and Houdaigi will still have plenty of snow coverage.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 26th March 2007, 10:01am
Weather conditions: Mostly fine.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A clear yet slightly hazy start to the day this morning in Nozawa. Temperatures at the top have dropped and are now sitting at -1C on Yamabiko and -1C at Uenotaira. Base depths are reduced to 170cm at the top and 120cm at Uenotaira. The Hikage bottom gellende remains open with some patchy areas but Nagasaka and Karasawa are closed. Top to bottom skiing is possible via the Forest home trail. Coverage and snow quality up high are still very good and there is great fun to be had particularly with so few people on the slopes this time of year.

The outlook is for a mixture of weather conditions over the next few days. Today should be mostly fine while there should be patches of light snow tomorrow. Temperatures will be fairly warm. Winds will be as high as 30km/h at the summit.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temperature is hovering around 0 this morning and it is very windy on the higher sections so it will be pretty uncomfortable up there today with a lot of the slushy snow from yesterday now turning compacted and icy. The upper lifts are closed at the moment because of these bad conditions and they may not open today at all. If you are going up take care.
