Niseko Now!

Friday 26th January 2007, 8:41am
Weather conditions: Clear Skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
With yesterday bringing the fresh powder and blue skies today will be much the same in terms of weather but not as brilliant riding conditions. With good visibility and light winds across the hole mountain for most of the day.

For the weekend some light snow should fall and continue into some heavier snow fall next week. With a high to the northwest of Hokkaido and a low sitting off to the south the cold weather should start being pulled down from Siberia and bring some light powder but heavier snow fall. The middle of next week should be a good week for those deep turns.

Minakami Now!

Weather conditions: Clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow over the past couple of days amounted to around 25 cm in the upper mountains and around 10cm in the valley.

This morning is a beautiful clear blue sky day with not a cloud in the sky and no wind whatsoever. A great day to be out carving up the slopes. It looks like it will cloud over from late this afternoon and there is more snow predicted from this evening through to the early hours of tomorrow morning. Fresh snow in Minakami this Saturday!

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 26th January 2007, 9:04am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a sunny start to the day here in Yuzawa with blue skies all around. It is around 0 degrees at the moment and a bit of a breeze blowing, but it seems as though GALA Yuzawa have made the decision to not open today due to stronger winds forecast for up there. It may rise to around +5 degrees today.

We'll update this page later on today with the latest for the weekend.

The sun was out for most of today, with some cloud moving early afternoon - but generally a very fine day. It was also rather warm as well, rising to around +6 degrees in the early afternoon - almost like a spring day. (Nice to be out on the slopes, but I would really like to wait another few months for those!)

I was out for a short while at Kagura today and the conditions were pretty good up there - good snow, very few people around and some good views from the top.

As you might expect, the better snow conditions at the moment can be found higher up and that will be the case over the weekend as well.

There is a chance of some snow falling tonight, with the official forecast giving us 0-5cm of freshies to potentially look forward to tomorrow morning. That would be good. After that there is a chance of rain, but we will just keep our fingers crossed it doesn't do that.

Have a good weekend!    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 26th January 2007, 9:18am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

Good morning and a beautiful morning it is with the wind sculpted snows of the high peaks picked out nicely in the early, low angle light. Yesterday's forecast of overcast did not materialize, at least over the Tsuga Ike / Hiyodori Mine area. Up in the alpine the winds were consistently moderate (20 to 40 km/hr.) with gusts of strong (40 to 60 km/hr.). This morning, looking with a 20 power telescope at the Goryu Dake summit area from the Hira Kawa Station, there was no evidence of wind transport (maybe the snow has all blown away). On the Happo One Lift Company piste the report is that the upper mountain is fairly hard pack, and the lower mountain, with the help of the busy grooming equipment, is softer.

The forecast for the valley floor is: Clear going to overcast sky, temperatures -4C to 6C, wind light (1 to 20 km/hr.) from the north-west, precipitation: nil to a few hours of snow in the evening.

Nota Bene: At the Happo One Lift Company there is a Super Giant Slalom race being held on the lower Panorama Course (Women's Downhill Course).

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Clear
Temperature: Present: -8.1 C
Maximum: 6.5 C
Minimum: -8.0 C
Wind: VL - west
Winds aloft: no evidence of wind, i.e. no snow plumes nor clouds to observe
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 922 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 64 cm
Foot penetration: 15 cm
Surface: faceted, size 3.0 mm
Density of surface snow: None to measure
Crust: breaking down under 3 cm of dry, faceting snow

Above Tree Line: Moderate

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Low

N.B. Yesterday the wind was a steady "moderate" from the north-west with gusts to "strong" above tree line.

Travel Advisory:
The southern aspects has been strongly affected by wind and sun. The northern aspects have been affected by wind in the upper areas and the snow is generally continuing to settle such that the ski penetration is decreasing. Yesterday at 1,920 m a.s.l. (flat site, no aspect or slope angle) a temperature gradient was observed in the upper snow pack (air temperature: -6.5C, snow surface tempertature: -3.0C, snow temperature down 10 cm: -7.0C, snow temperature down 20 cm: -9.2C, snow temperature down 30 cm: -8.8 C).

The travel is generally good with a ski penetration on the northerly aspects 20 cm at most (where observed).

The buried surface hoar has not gone away. Have a look for yourself. It is very variable from location to location.

There may be some lingering instability in the recently transported snow.

Furano Now!

Friday 26th January 2007, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow overnight and only a couple of cm yesterday during the day. The forecast is not predicting any major precipitation for a few days so looks like we will be making the most of the groomers for a while. Furano resort really take care of their groomed runs and there aren't many people on the mountain at the moment so we should be alright for the next few days making the most of the awesome snow that we have received over the last week.

It was a very cold night, last night. The temperature was -11 at mountain base at 8am this morning. Today is starting off nice and sunny but will get cloudier as the day progresses.   Read more ...

A crystal clear and sunny start to the day today in Nozawa! Views down the valley to the other resorts are spectacular so take your camera today. The temperatures are -8C on Yamabiko and -7C on Uenotaira. In the village at present is -4C. The snow yesterday was very light in the morning and petered out during the day. No snow fell overnight. The base depths on the mountain are 170cm still at Yamabiko and 5cm less at Uenotaira this morning with 130cm. The winds at the moment are very light but will reach around 10km/h during the day.

The forecast is somewhat welcome. It predicts the winds to increase to up to 30km/h tonight and for moderately heavy snow to fall, with light snow to continue for the rest of the weekend excluding Sunday morning.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 26th January 2007, 10:01am
Weather conditions: Sunny blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
And a fine sunny day it is! Bright blue skies, the sun is out and hardly a cloud to be seen - it's another fine day to be out on the hills at Shiga Kogen with a camera with some fantastic views on offer of far-off mountain ranges.

A slight snowfall yesterday brought a fresh topping to the slopes, but the official snow depths are unchanged - it is cold today though and snow conditions should be pretty good out there.

The forecast for tomorrow is fine with a chance of snow, and then a sunny day lined up for Sunday.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 26th January 2007, 10:15am
Weather conditions: Blue skies!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I was woken by that unruly sound of dripping, of building materials heating, solar radiation melting the snow. A warm start yes, -1 at the village - definitely going to soar above zero today, so don't wear too many clothes!

Blue skies, a beautiful contrast, the white mountain against the deep blue. Compared to yesterdays white-out - icy conditions - today should be a bonus day!

Yesterdays conditions: lots of snow up top, some lovely powder, however wind conditions had filled the valleys and blown the sides to ice - danger! - I guess we can expect some perks to this though as the next snowfall comes we'll see a transformed terrain.

The Half-pipe yesterday was also questionable, a bad 'open' shape with VERY icy walls - not something you want to be going near on a snowboard or skis! - Yes, I confess, the half-pipe sees itself opening to the 2 plank crew this year, had to let the cat out of the bag at some point eh! So come on skiers let's see you in that half-pipe. - ASAGAI HALF-PIPE IS NOW OPEN TO SKIERS! Gawd, helmets please!
