A bit of blue overhead
An early start today (working at the cross country races), so I’m up ahead of the resorts (apart from Lotte Arai). Pretty much the same as yesterday in terms of temperature, no new snowfall, a few flakes drifting down from high up but doesn’t look like much snow up on the hill either. Most everything is marked as closed at Lotte Arai; I wonder if this is going to change, so be sure to check their website before heading out.
Full reset yet again yesterday but with 20cm recorded up top and 15cm in my car park. Kind of a bummer it fell Saturday night as the mountain was pretty busy (relatively speaking) and there are going to be some tracks about today.
The weather yesterday was clear and things are warming up. There is barely a cloud in the sky this morning and the forecast is for clear weather through tomorrow night when light snow (and hopefully another reset) is on the cards. Forecast high for the day is expected to be -3C up top but 5C at the base. Let's hope we get some friendly clouds roll in.
Please note that the snowfall numbers posted in this report will be observed from close to the base Tenjindaira Ropeway station - which is often much more than in the central town area of Minakami. Read more ...

Lovely blue skies
Good morning from Zao.
It's a beautiful morning here.
The sun is out and there are lovely blue skies all around.
Nice and cold too - to start off with at least - so should be a good morning.
As with what looks like many regions of Japan, it's going to be warmer mid week and borderline rain-snow even up there. Keep an eye on that and the fingers crossed.
Lifts and course info:
- All lifts appear to be opening as scheduled - Note: the Karamatsu pair lift usually only operates on weekends - All areas open
Thin overcast cloud over Yuzawa, forecast to clear
Good morning from Yuzawa.
It was a generally cloudy day yesterday but quite bright, bit of sun at times. And fairly mild.
Sun is still forecast for the day today along with temperatures of around +4C in town. Right now it's quite chilly and kind of bright but overcast - perhaps the current thin cloud will disappear quick this morning leaving us with clearer blue skies... it feels like there's a good chance of that.
It looks like the end of February and the beginning of March is going to deliver milder conditions and we are still looking at the chance of rain around Wednesday and Thursday when it might get up to around 10C in town.
As lovely as you are, Spring, we don't want you just yet!
We'll add more details later on, but just as a reminder: most of the ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma are open through until the end of March or early April, with a handful opening through until Golden Week in early May - and beyond, in the case of the main part of Kagura. So there's a lot of the season left.

Ski resorts in Yuzawa:
Checked and updated every morning. Note that some ski resorts may not have updated their own info at the time this report is published.
There has been a nice little top up of 4cm of new snow overnight. It is snowing very lightly as I write this but the snow is predicted to stop soon. Early morning fog is down to base but I suspect this will lift and we will have at least partial sunshine soon. Tomorrow is expected to be sunny. Read more ...
Geto Kogen Now!
Monday 26th February 2018, 8:02am
We saw some snow on and off yesterday, mostly into the evening but nothing notable to report on — 2cm overnight. Tops were about -6C with mainly cloudy conditions and some light winds about.
Beautiful sunny day ahead today with tops of -3C, little to no winds and the chance of a late snow shower. Wish I had more to say, but unfortunately I don’t — we’re at that stage where all I can report is that its a bluebird with some nice groomed slopes and maybe a bit of powder if you’re headed to some lesser traveled paths through the trees.
Unfortunately I’ve got some bad news in the snow department. Thursday, which I’ve been hyping as our snow day for the week, is looking a little too warm for snow. Instead of heavy snow, it looks like we’re in for some heavy... rain. Yep. And about 22mm of it throughout the day. This is most likely due to the tops of 4C so far expected, but again, this changed overnight so it could definitely change again...
Tuesday: light snow (<10cm), light winds, tops of -1C Wednesday: mostly sunny, light snow (5cm), tops of 1C Thursday: heavy rain, extreme winds (85km+), tops of 4C
Official snow depths:
Top: 530cm Base: 360cm
Night skiing operations are scheduled at Geto Kogen on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until 25th February 2018

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Overcast but sunny - clearing up maybe?
Good morning from Nozawa and the start of another week. Just a few more days before March. Wow. Still, another was of looking at it is that there's still over 2 months of the ski season left here in Nozawa. Yes, I prefer thinking of it that way.
This morning the sun is out but it's also kind of overcast-cloudy at the moment, but due to probably be clearer during the day.
More sun due tomorrow along with slightly milder conditions as well. Sometime around mid week we are still seeing warmer temperatures (closing in on double digits down at base) and rain on the forecast so keep that in mind if you are planning a trip. By the end of the week hopefully it'll be colder again.
Monday 26th February 2018
Fresh snowfall since yesterday (as reported by the resort):
Some heavy snowfall last night and this morning we are all in for a treat... I'm adding 24cm of really quality-looking snowfall to my report this morning here at base. And, as always, it's reasonable to expect more up there higher up.
I wasn't expecting such a good number, but it is the very nice kind of surprise.
And it means that we only need another 7cm of snowfall to go before my observed snowfall for February 2018 reaches 3m. It looks like it should be fun putting together my season so far recap. Expect that sometime in the first few days of March.
Anyway, more snow today and tomorrow (perhaps!) and then some sun around mind week (perhaps!) and then more regular snowfall for the start of March (perhaps!) - the forecast is still looking good and friendly for us. As it stands at the moment, if you like the sunshine Wednesday should be your day.
Actually (last minute update before posting).... as I write this it's snowing quite nicely, nice big flakes. Though some blue skies not far from the mountain. See webcam images below.
Wind shouldn't be any issue today and all lifts should be open.
Visibility might be limited but the snow quality this morning should more than make up for that.
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Niseko base 5.00am: -10°, 20cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -10.3°, WSW4.4m/s, 20cm new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -11°, light winds, 25cm new snow. Hirafu 1250m: -13°, 20cm new snow, light wind. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW12m/s. Kamui Cape: NW8m/s, 1021hPa, wave 1.1m.
Currently we have high pressure to the west and low pressure to the east, the isobars are spaced widely apart and 20-30cm light crystal snow fell overnight. From tests the snow pack has stabilized and general avalanche risk is low. Light snow in the trees is good riding. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare before going out of bounds. Shallow soft slab avalanches are likely to occur on 30 deg slopes above 900m.
1 year ago today Sam passed away in Haru no Taki, our deep condolences to his family and friends. The reasons are not so simple for Haru no Taki being strictly off limits. It's not only because its dangerous. Remember that by it being closed you are able to ride wide areas on the rest of the mountain.
As we move into spring the risk of full depth avalanches increases. Avoid riding on cracked slopes, reconsider any bad habits like riding or stopping in the valley bottom. Don't duck ropes and enter strictly off limits areas. Do not overestimate your knowledge skills or equipment. Danger is everywhere. Have a good day.

Sunny, blue skies
Sunshine likely today, was what I said yesterday and indeed the sun is out and there's blue skies over Madarao this morning.
No fresh snowfall to report but the weather should make it a fine day to be out there.
Generally milder conditions are forecast for this coming week, particular it seems around mid week. Unfortunately we might well get rained on as well, which wouldn't be the best way to start March, but let's worry about that nearer the time!

The weekend crowds are gone and we start a new week.
There's no fresh snow to report to you, but some fine weather this morning and it should be a good morning to find yourself out on the mountain. Lots of blue sky with some cloud around the backdrop peaks.
If you are thinking of being here this week, keep an eye on that forecast - it still shows rain later on Wednesday into Thursday (snow at higher elevations?), and as things get colder come Thursday - hopefully - quickly back to snow down to village and a reset. It's going to be interesting to see how that all works out, but it might be a period to sit out.
Before all that starts happening, we can expect our share of sunshine and I for one am going to be sure to enjoy it.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Overcast, some blue sky, sunshine
Hello and good morning from Shiga Kogen.
A light northerly wind this morning and the sun is out and it's a kind of hazy kind of feel here, though I see more clear blue in some parts. There's no fresh snowfall to report but it should be a good day.
Milder temperatures still forecast this coming week with snow around mid week (up here, rain lower down). One of the advantages of our base areas being high up.
That's about it for this morning.
Blimey, it's nearly March.
Official snow depths numbers reported by different areas of Shiga Kogen:
Please note that these numbers are the official numbers that ski resorts publish and we check and update them each morning.
Good morning from Naeba! It's a clear morning here in Naeba, with the sun just breaking over the adjacent mountains to reach the valley. There is some high cloud shrouding the sun somewhat, but this should burn off as the morning presses on. The pistes will be hard this morning, but will again soften up throughout the day. The sun will shine all day today, and there will be very little wind. Air temperatures will remain comfortably above 0°C at the base area.
Looking forwards, we can expect a warm week ahead. Daytime highs will be well above 0°C indicating that spring is well and truely on its' way. The most noteable weather event ahead is a warm block of air pushing in on Wenesday, pushing air temperatures up to daytimes highs of 8°C. With this warm air, we can expect some precipitation, which will likely fall as rain in the valley but snow higher up. It will also be rather breezy throughout Wednesday to Friday, with winds gusting up to 35kmph in the valley. Read more ...
