Overcast & Raining
The bluebird days are over and sadly the rain has arrived.
The temperatures are high all the way to the top of the mountain, which of course means that it's raining all the way to the top.
You can expect groomers, with chopped and compacted snow to the sides of the runs, with a mixture of slush and icy patches this morning. As the day progresses the snow will get heavier and make it challenging on the slopes, due to such variable conditions.
Enjoy the challenge and stay positive.... colder temperatures are on the way, which will hopefully bring with it some snow. Got to keep hoping!
Temperatures rose to around 14 degrees in this area of Niigata prefecture yesterday and in Niigata city itself it was around 20 degrees - a record high for a day in February. So it sure was a warm day! Started off sunny and remained sunny but ended up fairly cloudy.
This morning we have some light rain falling in Yuzawa and grey skies. The rain seemed to be holding off until a short while ago but is coming down now as I write this. Cloud cover so a grey start to the day and rain unfortunately forecast for pretty much most of the day - perhaps heavy at times - and tomorrow as well. Right now it is 9 degrees in Yuzawa and even 7 degrees in Naeba.
There is a fair wind but all resorts seem to be open as planned.
A look at the weekly forecast shows a mix of fine weather and rain with temperatures dropping somewhat (but not enough!) - and hopefully some snowfall perhaps around mid-week next week so sadly I can't bring any exciting news right now. As I reported before though, there is complete snow cover on the resorts so that is not an issue right now.... just expect spring-like snow conditions!
Well yesterday was warm! Double figure temperatures in the village making it feel like Golden Week weather... my friend was up in Niigata city where it was 20 degrees, making it the warmest Febuary day on record for Niigata city. Hopefully that was the peak and things will cool down again once more.
Today will be cooler, but still mild. At the moment it is 7 degrees in Naeba and just cloudy but we have rain likely a bit later on. It is already raining down in the main Yuzawa town area. The forecast for tomorrow is also rain. How about snow? Looks like the earliest we can perhaps expect more snow is mid-week when it should be getting cooler once more.
All resort areas are open as planned this morning.
The sunshine and blue skies have left us, only to be replaced by clouds and rain.
Definitely not the kind of conditions we want to see at the end of February! If you're planning to get up the mountain today, the morning will be the best option, with heavy rain expected in the afternoon.
The forecast for the coming days doesn't bode too well for the rest of the season eithe, with a fair bit of rain and warm weather expected for at least the next week.
As I reported yesterday, a very warm day. Overnight was very mild as well and we have another 'warmest morning of the season' this morning - it's 8 degrees in the village. For Zao in February, that is very unseasonal. Anothe first this morning is a temperature above zero at the top of the mountain early on.... it only dropped to +1.4 degrees overnight.
Anyway, this morning it is cloudy though fairly bright.
Yesterday there was a temporary problem with the Zao Ropeway and it was mid-afternoon by they could get it back operating... all seems to be fine there this morning.
Early next week onwards temperatures should start getting back to something like normal for the time of year and perhaps some rain before snow around Tuesday.
Phew, these warm conditions are continuing. It's more of a cloudy start to today rather than sunny, but most certainly the warmest early morning of the season yet with Maruike at +7 degrees at 9am! I'd like to look at previous seasons too as I can't remember having such a warm day in February up here.
It is cloudy right now with some rain falling in places and it looks like we won't escape rainfall today and perhaps into tomorrow as well. It might even get heavy at times. We can only hope it moves on sooner rather than later.
Forecast wise it seems while today will surely be the warmest for a while we will be stuggling to see colder temperatures though perhaps some intermittent light snowfall before Tuesday.
Snow conditions basically what you would expect with the warm weather. Lots of heavy snow and icy speed to be had - be careful out there!
Nighta this evening planned at the following resort area:
- Ichinose Family
Official resort snow depths as of 26th February 10:
Rain... It looked like one blast of heavy rain, and then things would brighten up, but the wind and rain are back again. The weekend is more promising than the forecasts of earlier in the week, and at least for a few days the temperatures will be a little lower. Maybe we won't lose a lot more of the snowpack (but when even Seki is reporting lower levels of snow, you know things are going down).
Sunday looks like a nice day; enjoy the spring conditions (knowing they aren't going away soon — sigh).
Sorry about missing yesterday but there was certainly nothing good to report. It was one of the warmest days I've ever experienced here during the winter months getting up to around 10 degrees at village level. Obviously the snow was very slushy and not that much fun to ski on at all. The day was mostly fine though with plenty of sunshine as some consolation. Overnight the rain hit as predicted and we ended up with around 15-20mm which has of course damaged the snowpack considerably. Most of the rain has now moved through and cooler air is starting to feed in with temperatures back down to near 3 degrees currently. Much of the rest of the outlook has temperatures remaining below freezing but there's not a lot of snow forecast at all. So by this evening the mountain is likely to turn into one big solid piece of ice and the groomers will be the only decent skiing until more snow returns.
Current Official Snow Depths:
Grand Hirafu: Top - 290 Bottom - 170
Niseko Village: Top - 375 Bottom - 205
Annupuri: Top - 355 Bottom - 230
Avalanche Information: (Information as of this morning)
Niseko Avalanche Info No.73
Moiwa base 6am: +5℃, light rain. Coastal data: N3m/s at Benkei cape, N5m/s, 1.1m waves and 1007hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: SSW6.8m/s, 0℃, drizzle. Constant strong southerly winds with intermittent gusts have kept blowing in areas above 1100m due to the passing low pressure system and the snow is melting fast with the rain and warm temperature. Surface slab avalanche from deeper layers or full depth avalanche hazard is rising in valleys and steep slopes. There are no new snowfall and now snowdrift development. According to all data evaluations, the mountain is in a foul condition. All gates will be kept closed for the sake of all resort users. Do not step out of bounds even if the weather clears out. One track left under the rope would lead many to do the same and increase the chances of accidents to happen. The snow in the course is soft but heavy and catching skis. Beware of falls & collisions. The mist should clear up as the air masses are replaced. Once again, DO NOT step out of bounds today. The mountain will turn good again soon.
The warm weather yesterday continued through the day and the temperature was still +10deg at 6pm at the base of the lifts. Most of the snow/ice cover on the roads has gone, or rather has been transformed into puddles.
This morning at 7am the temperature was +6deg, and the melt continues. Cold weather looks like it will set in again from this evening, with some sunny weather over the weekend period.
On the mountain today things will be warm, so take this into account when layering up (or down as the case may be today), expect snow conditions to spring like. Read more ...

Overcast and raining
Great weather in Minakami today.... if you are a farmer! The forecast rain has come albeit very light it is still rain. Temperatures are hovering around 6 deg. C today with the rain continuing through to late this evening.
Tomorrow looks cloudy for the morning with a possibility of rain again from mid afternoon, so best to try and get some turns in during the morning. The Sunday forecast is for overcast with relatively warm temperatures, so at least the snow will be soft! Read more ...

Just a quick update before the weekend starts...
Not the best of situations to report unfortunately! It has been raining for most of the day here and I have got to report that it is raining heavily at the moment and is about +6 degrees.
It looks like it will continue raining into tomorrow morning as well, perhaps clearing up by the afternoon and followed by hopefully clearer weather on Sunday.
So it looks like Sunday would be the pick of the weekend. Read more ...
