Cloud, fog, mist
Yesterday was a fairly miserable one all round with cloud, fog and that rain that I mentioned.
Happily things have chilled down overnight and this morning is considerably colder than it was yesterday with temperatures back somewhere like where they should be under zero. Currently outside the thermometer here is saying -3 degrees. After the rain of yesterday though I'd imagine we need to be looking out for some icy conditions out there today.
It is a misty/foggy morning in places though with brighter spots in some areas. Maybe some light snow tonight and into tomorrow, but we can't expect much.
The following resort plans to be open for nighta tonight: Ichinose Family
Official resort snow depths as of 26th February 09:
Overnight the temperature dropped back well into the minuses where it should be at this time of year although only a dusting of snow fell. This morning it is snowing a little heavier and a few cm's have already fallen. The snow though is expected to clear this afternoon. A ridge of high pressure is pushing out from the Asian continent and the low we expected to start hitting the region tomorrow will move further to the north so little precipitation is expected at first but temps will still get a little mild, up around freezing at the base. The low will still strengthen as it moves across the Sea of Okhotsk and will direct cooler northerlies over Hokkiado from Saturday onwards with regular snowfalls throughout the remainder of the forecast. The best snow today will be found up high as lower areas did pack down significantly in yesterdays milder temps.
The rain and drizzle of yesterday eased off a bit in the afternoon but it was generally a cloudy and dull day. Late last night the rain was back, and earlier this morning it was drizzly but right now it seems to be holding off and it is just cloudy. Actually breaks in the clouds are appearing and it looks like it could turn into a fairly decent day. It is colder this morning with the temperature hovering around zero at the moment with just a slight breeze.
Yesterday the long term weather forecast for the next 3 months was released. What we didn't want to hear was that March is forecast to be warmer than is normal. These things can of course be way off, so lets just hope it is. With the run of the season so far though, people are thinking that it will be the case. If mild temperatures continue and we don't get regular snowfalls, it will of course have an impact on how long the snow we have will remain and the length of the season...
Nighta tonight is at the following resorts in Yuzawa: Naeba Iwappara
In Minamiuonuma just to the north, nighta at: Ishiuchi Maruyama Centleisure Maiko Joetsu Kokusai
Well its another dull day here in Hakuba, but at least the rain has gone for now. We woke this morning to find a fresh but very light new dusting of snow, but after the rain and slush from the past few days, the sudden drop in temperature has turned the ground into a bit of an icy mess.
Low visibility and moderate easterly winds means another dreary day, but cheer up, as we are expecting light snowfall tonight and tomorrow. It's not much, but its still better than rain...
If only it would snow now as much as it has been raining.... Fingers crossed!
It is an overcast morning here in Nozawa Onsen, with cloud surrounding the top of Mt Kenashi. Light snow showers have been falling on and off, and it is -1 degree in the village and -5 degrees up on Yamabiko. There is currently a 15 km/h westerly up the top and the base is reported to be 230cm for Yamabiko and 165cm for Uenodaira (representing a small drop of 5 - 10cm ).
Yesterday saw rain falling across the whole resort in the morning, but easing by the middle of the day. Cloudy conditions persisted without any real precipitation and the temperatures were mostly just above freezing.
Friday morning is forecast to bring some light snow to the top of the resort and light rain to the lower areas. Saturday and Sunday will be partly cloudy but with no real precipitation to speak of. Early next week shows some promise for some new snow, with cold temperatures and the possibility of precipitation but nothing big forecast at this stage.
All lifts will operate except Mizunashi, Yunomine, Challenge and Utopia.
All courses are open except Kurokura and Hachiman.
So we have that 'shrouded in cloud' look today - the one where Naeba has no top half of the mountain, because of low cloud. Choose your Gondola this morning as they are all open though expect to ascend into poor visibility with flat light.
It's still warm too and whilst yesterdays rain didn't manage to impress any of us here, we still keep eying that snow forecast and so watching the freezing point meander up and down the mountain - waiting for it to drop whilst hopefully something substantial rolls across the satellite radar screens. Nothing yet though - a sprinkling of snow for Friday night perhaps.
Oh and a baby spider just walked across the table... can happen anytime, but still maybe a sign that things are a little warmer than they should be this month. Read more ...

High cloud covers Minakami this morning with a light to moderate breeze blowing at the valley level. The clouds are the start of the front coming in that will bring snow from lunchtime tomorrow and continue through to Saturday. Looks like a great weekend in the mountains! Read more ...

Cloudy, periods of heavy snow.
Sorry for the delay today, Furano fans, I got tied up.
Fairly good news to go around. Nice cool temps today, and it snowed fairly hard during a couple of periods today, resulting in approx a 5 cm accumulation. The winds were mild, it was fairly heavy overcast, and the overall snow conditions were great.
Going to remain cool tonight, but up to near freezing tomorrow. 8 cm of snow are forecast for tomorrow, and some light snow overnight.
