Niseko Now!

Monday 26th February 2007, 8:58am
Weather conditions: Clear.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There were a couple of very light snow showers yesterday but it remained mostly clear. It started off cold but in the sun it got quite warm on the hill. Conditions up high were really good with some nice dry snow. But lower down where the slopes were more rain affected take care as there is a hard icy layer under there.

Today has dawned with sunshine and clear skies. We can expect this to continue through the day, with generally light winds. This afternoon the cloud cover may increase however another cold clear night is forecast.

Tomorrow we can hope to see the return of the white stuff with some snow showers forecast.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 26th February 2007, 9:16am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Nothing much has changed since yesterday: cool, clear and bone hard in the morning, with softening as the sun's direct rays effect the snow. The higher you go and the more northerly the aspect the less this will be a factor.

Yesterday at 1130 hrs. at 1,600 m a.s.l. on a due north exposure 20 cm ski penetration in rather nice powder snow was observed in the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain. More snow seems to have fallen in the Otari area than the Hakuba area (mountain weather is often full of quite localized differences).

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Clear
Temperature: Present: -5.0 C
Maximum: 9.0 C
Minimum: -8.0 C
Wind at surface: Light from west
Winds aloft: There were no clouds nor moving snow to gauge by
Barometer and trend: 926 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 62 cm
Foot penetration: 1 cm
Surface: Faceted, size 2.5 mm
Density of surface snow: not measured
Crust: 21 cm
Cloud ceiling: Unlimited

Above tree line: Moderate

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Moderate

N.B. . Once again there was very good crust development overnight. The clear sky will allow the sun affected snow to change rapidly. The lower elevation snow is isothermal below the crust. At what elevation that this is the case will vary with aspect (i.e.: higher on the south and lower on the north). Yesterday at 1,800 m a.s.l. on a southerly aspect there was "wet" snow down 30 cm below the surface moist snow overlying a melt freeze crust.

Travel Advisory:
There were two parties out yesterday that have submitted information: one was snow-shoeing from 1,580 m a.s.l. to 1,850 m a.s.l.above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain; the other travelled from the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain, over Hiyodori Mine, across the Oya Zawa upper drainage, along and over the ridge bounding the north-east side of the Oya Zawa drainage, thence to the Kuro Kawa Zawa and the Nori Kura Lift Company terrain.

Good travel conditions prevailed. There was a maximum of 25 cm snow-shoe penetration on due north exposures. The Tsuga Ike to Nori Kura Lift Company party reports good skiing on the trip which was all on due north exposures. This was below tree line and thus relatively sheltered from the wind. Also more snow seems to have fallen in the Otai area recently as compared with the Hakuba area.

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 26th February 2007, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a very fine day and the temperatures did not rise that much so it stayed fairly cold throughout the day.

There is no new snow to report this morning - just a bit of frost in places. It was another cold night again but things will get warmer than they were yesterday with temperatures forecast to rise to around +7 degrees in the early afternoon. There are similar weather conditions also forecast for tomorrow.

The next chance of snowfall seems to be for Wednesday and Thursday.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 26th February 2007, 9:38am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More of the same today with fine clear blue skies from early on in the morning in Shiga Kogen and while it was cold last night (and still at the moment), it looks like it will warm up considerably this afternoon. Snow conditions are variable - in some areas fairly spring like and thin on the ground, but still some decent snow to be found in other areas.

Nighta tonight at Ichinose Family and Ichinose Diamond.

Similar fine conditions are also forecast for tomorrow as well. This year we certainly have seen more of the mountains during the winter than a usual season here!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 26th February 2007, 10:09am
Weather conditions: Clear.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Almost a mirror image of yesterday this morning in Nozawa; Crystal clear skies and cold temperatures but minus the weekend crowd. Awesome day on the slopes yesterday with plenty of good snow up high. There were some icy patches down on the lower parts of the resort and on parts of the skyline. Snow coverage is still good even at the bottom, but if temperatures rise today some patches may show through particularly down at Karasawa.
The base depths are 185cm at Yambiko and 130cm at Uenotaira. The lower reaches of the resort are between 25cm and 60cm.

The outlook is for clear skies all today and most of tomorrow, with light snow beginning in the late afternoon tomorrow. This will get heavier over night with at least 10cm expected. On Wednesday it will snow lightly all day. Winds on Tuesday and Wednesday may get as high as 25km/h.

Naeba Now!

Monday 26th February 2007, 10:46am
Weather conditions: clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Beautiful blue skies again today, the flags are fluttering a little from a gentle breeze and the temperature is hanging around very close to zero. The weekend snow cover helped the gelandes out a lot. So things should be on the up a little this week with a max 5 degrees set for tomorrow afternoon and a temperature drop during Tuesday night with some snow.

No more left overs of powder in Kagura, its all been spent. Maybe wednesday morning?   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Monday 26th February 2007, 11:30am
Weather conditions: Clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is out again in Minakami with blue sky as far as the eye can see. There is a definate Spring feeling in the air. There is some snow forecast for Wednesday, but after that it looks like a spell of sunny warm weather leading into March.

This is bad news for any low altitude ski areas not only in Minakami but throughout Central Japan. Many have been struggling for snow for the last couple of weeks and the ground is starting to show through. Higher altitude ski areas should be good until the end of March but Spring conditions will prevail much earlier this season (the start of march).   Read more ...
