Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Finally some powder in Hakuba! It started snowing yesterday and didn't stop giving us a solid White Christmas. 40-50 cms on my car this morning and with Goryu reporting a base increase from 70 to 100 and 50 cms of fresh. Goryu and Happo aren't moving as I right this and it might take some time before things open up as there are some strong gusts and a ton of snow fallen. will be great once you get up there!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 26th December 2008, 8:36am
Weather conditions: Blizzard
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More than 50cm of snow on the ground this morning. You could classify this as 'a good dumping' of snow! -9 degrees in the village with severe weather conditions and bad visibility. Due to the high winds there will be no upper mountain access today which means no gondola 1 or 2 at Naeba or access to Kagura.

Quite a contrast really, considering the state of the slopes yesterday.

OK, so yesterday the old people where saying 'This has been the worst snow in 20 years!' a fair comment as it is probably true. - But are we right to go ahead and assume that it's going to get worse every year? Maybe not, More unpredictable? More severe? Who knows!

It snowed last night. Excellent!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 26th December 2008, 8:59am
Weather conditions: Snowing, windy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We have awoken this morning to a thick cover of snow across the village. Around 30cm has fallen in town since yesterday evening, and 40cm is reported for Yamabiko, where it is -11 degrees. It is still snowing now, although the wind is likely to keep some lifts from opening. It is currently blowing at 50km/h from the west.

So far only the Nagasaka Triple, Hikage Triple and Hikage Pair A and B lifts are expected to open. The winds are predicted to continue throughout today and tomorrow and should come with lots more snow too. Finally winter seem to have sunk it's teeth in....

Lifts open:
Nagasaka Triple
Hikage Triple
Hikage number 2 pair A and B
Yu Road (moving walk)

(Official reports of courses open has not changed from yesterday)

Courses open:
Yamabiko A, B, C and D
Kokenashi A and B
Yunomine B   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Snow!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was all very exciting last night hearing about all that snow we can expect. Well, we did get snow. Perhaps not as much as we would have liked so far but it is still snowing and hopefully will build up during the day.

It is a cold morning, down to -3 at town level and surely a fair bit colder high up. It is looking like it will stay that way too.

So there was about 30cm of snow on top of the car this morning. There are some pretty strong winds blowing about and that is meaning a no-go for the Tashiro part of Kagura --- only part of Mitsumata will be open up there today. But we need the snow, so not many complaints there, lets hope it builds up and continues to fall.

Other resorts are happy to see the snow fall and preparing to open up just as soon as they can. Kandatsu are hoping to open tomorrow (Saturday) reporting 50cm this morning. Same over at Iwappara who are reporting 25-30cm this morning. Expect other resorts to open tomorrow as well.

We will update this page again this evening with the latest on the weather and resort openings for the weekend. In the meantime, snow snow snow please!

PM update:

It has been a real mid-winters day today. Very cold out there at -3 and some bitterly cold winds blowing snow all over the place and at times causing havoc on the roads. At times visibility has been a matter of cm and quite dangerous out there.

All this is good news for the town though as another 15-20cm or so of snow had found itself onto the top of my car this afternoon. So we have had a good 40-50cm of snow today in Yuzawa I would say and hopefully that number is going to get bigger as the snow is still falling and forecast to overnight as well.

The resorts of the area were all waiting for this of course and most of them are going to be opening up for the first time this season tomorrow morning. Of course Naeba and Kagura are going to be in fine condition tomorrow and surely almost all open. In addition, we have confirmed that the following resorts in Yuzawa will be at least part open tomorrow morning:

Pine Ridge Resorts Kandatsu
NASPA Ski Garden
Yuzawa Park
Yuzawa Nakazato

(Please note that we have not been able to confirm news from the remaining resorts, though that does not necessarily mean that they will not be open).

Just to the north in Minamiuonuma, the following resorts will be at least part open tomorrow:

Ishiuchi Maruyama
Joetsu Kokusai (actually, it seems they opened today!)

Centleisure Maiko, at the time of writing, has not made a decision on whether it will be opening tomorrow or not.

It looks like we can expect more snow through the night. Up to 40cm in the mountains and 15-20cm in the valley is forecast between now and tomorrow 9am. The snow is forecast to be falling all through tomorrow as well, with temperatures not rising into the positives. So if you are planning on visiting the area get well wrapped up - and have a great time!   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 26th December 2008, 9:48am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
What better present than a 2 day snow storm!

The snow started on Christmas evening around 18:00 and is forecast to continue through to the early hours of Sunday morning. There is currently 40 cm of fresh snow at the valley level and up to 55 cm of fresh in the upper mountains. By Sunday morning the storm should have accumulated more than 70cm of new snow at the valley level and around 100cm in the upper mountains.

This is the first real storm of the season. This well timed storm will mean that all ski areas in Minakami should be open by tomorrow.

Sunday looks like a relatively sunny day, as a high pressure system moves over most of Japan. But the precipitation should return from Monday evening with more snow expected from Tuesday through to Wednesday (31st).

As far as backcountry and off piste riding goes, there is not really enough base as yet to venture to far out of bounds. There are still many small trees and bushes poking through as well as many exposed streams in the valleys. This storm will put a nice cover over things but only enough to hide the dangers from view. Best to wait until after the new year so this snow can settle.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 26th December 2008, 9:54am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Terrible - or is that fantastic - conditions here in Shiga Kogen this morning! I think most of us would say the latter as we have 20-30cm of fresh snow to boast about this morning. Looks like more in some areas looking at the increase in snow depth reported in, say, Yakebitaiyama.

Very poor visibility this morning as there are strong winds blowing early on and because of those winds only a few lifts in Shiga Kogen are operating early on - lifts at Kumanoyu, Yakebitaiyama, Ichinose Family - but it is very limited and probably snow. Some people might enjoy these conditions but looking outside I'm not sure there will be many out there braving them right now.

Of course once the winds drop we will hopefully see much more of Shiga Kogen open up - hopefully this weekend....   Read more ...

Merry Day-After Christmas

6 cm of new stuff overnight, and it's snowing lightly now. Nice dry, fluffy, unpackable snow. It's a bit windy at times, with the weatherman saying it's blowing 22 km/h. It's going to get progressively cooler during the day today, dropping down to -8 C tonight.

No new skis for Christmas, so I'll just have to soldier on with my current set.

A bit more activity this morning on the Kitanomine runs, with workers roping off areas with insufficient snow fall. My guess is they are going to open the Kitanomine runs by the weekend. You may quote me if I'm right.

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
UPDATE on Hakuba Conditions:

Due to high winds up top none of the Gondolas are still presently not running in Hakuba except for Tsugaike which is running to mid station. Lifts running at Goryu are Tommi Sky 4, Tommi #1 Pair, Imori # 1 High speed pair and Imori Milky 4. The Shirakaba lifts 1, 2 & 3 are running at Happo with a total of 8 lifts operating there. Thanks to Tokyu! Tsugaike is running a few bottom lifts and the Shirakaba lift giving the best skiing in the valley.

Sun Alpina Sanosaka is planning to open tomorrow as is Hakuba Minekata, with the Iwatake and Highland resorts just waiting for enough snow.

The winds are continuing to increase and will through the day so don't expect to get up top today. It will be great once we can access the great snows that have finally fallen this white Christmas.

The snows will continue through the day and into tomorrow so as long as the winds die down the snow will be deep and fluffy.

50 cm of new snow overnight. This new snow storm is associated with moderate to strong winds from varying directions meaning that there may be multiple wind deposits on all aspects. Stay out of steep complex terrain as avalanches are likely.
Faceting has been found underlying the melt freeze crust of Dec. 23rd.
Be aware of rapid changes in the snow related to frequent changes in wind direction
Extreme caution around cornices and below cornices on steep convex terrain.

Danger level: Extreme

Wide spread natural and human triggered avalanches certain.
Danger level ratings are set for conditions at tree line and may vary from below tree line and High Alpine areas.
Use this information as a guideline only.

Weather conditions: Heavy snow
New snowfall: --

A major blizzard hit last night with somewhat strong but safe winds left. Seki Onsen astounded today with snow levels well over a meter. All lifts are open at 10:00am . Fine powder even at the bottoms this morning with temps expected to actually drop through the day rather than rise. The levels as well as the quality should stay as it is as the day progresses.

But even more blizzard action is forecasted this evening.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Snowing

Sorry for the late report but I had to head into Sapporo this morning. It was a bit of an epic drive with blizzard conditions the whole way, especially over Nakayama toge (a 900m pass between here and the city).
Wet snow started yesterday afternoon in the village and continued through much of the night getting dryer as the temperature dropped. A large low pressure system is continuing to deepen just to the north of Hokkaido in the Sea of Okhotsk and strong winds and snow will continue through the weekend. The winds today were strong enough that most lifts on the mountain were closed except those at the base. Things eased a little this afternoon and lifts up to mid mountain are now running. The strong winds have also meant that there has been little increase in the reported depths on the mountain but there has been a lot of drifting so find those sheltered areas for the deep stuff.
There is significant risk of avalanches currently in lee slopes along ridges so please don't be ducking ropes. It's also very cold up there with significant wind chill factors. Rug up and keep an eye out for frostbite on exposed skin.
