Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 26th April 2016, 8:16am
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Morning from Yuzawa and there's not a whole lot to report today.

The sun quickly appeared yesterday but it never turned into the clear blue sky day that we thought it might do.

This morning the sun is out again and the skies are clearer/more blue. A fine day is forecast with temperatures again rising above 20 degrees in town.

Tomorrow may well start fine but rain is expected later on in the day and at least through Thursday as well and possibly into Friday - which is the first day of the 'Golden Week' holidays.

---

Upcoming Golden Week holidays:

* Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend)
* Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week)
* Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend)

---

Resorts that remain open in Yuzawa on Tuesday 26th April 2016:

Kagura
The Tashiro Ropeway and area plans to be open until 8th May.
The Kagura area via Mitsumata Ropeway plans to be open until 29th May.
Whether they can actually achieve that with the amount of snow left is another matter!
The Mitsumata area is now used only as a 'connecting course' to get to and from the main Kagura area.
Most of the main Kagura and Tashiro courses do remain open with natural snow, but some courses are now getting rather narrow (and 'dirty') - especially at Tashiro.
Note that the top Kagura Number 5 pair lift is now closed for the season.
Official snow depth:
Kagura area: 160cm
Tashiro area: 110cm
Mitsumata area: -cm

All other resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma are now closed for the season.

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 26th April 2016, 8:25am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Hello and good morning from Niseko.

It's mostly cloudy this morning, but sun is expected... and more of the same tomorrow too.

Friday is still looking like it might bring some interesting weather - rain (less interesting) and perhaps even some snow (much more interesting) at higher elevations. Friday is also of course the first day of the Golden Week holiday period, more on that below.

That's about all I have to report this morning.

10 days to go, including today.

---

'Golden Week' starts from later this week.

Golden Week is a number of national holidays that happen close to each other giving lots of people a nice holiday in late April and early May. Most tourist spots get very busy as a result! Depending on what days they fall, some years it is a considerably long period. This year, the actual national holidays are 'Showa Day' on Friday 29th April, 'Constitution Day' on Tuesday 3rd May, 'Greenery Day' on Wednesday 4th May and 'Children's Day' on Thursday May 5th. This means that this year Golden Week looks like this:

* Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend)
* Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week)
* Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend)

No doubt some folk will be taking Monday 2nd May and Friday 6th May as a holiday as well giving them a 10 day break.

Thursday 5th May is scheduled to be the last day of the snow season here in Niseko.

Morning from Hakuba.

The sun is out this morning and it's going to be another fine day with temperatures zooming up into early 20's by this afternoon.

Forecasts show us different stories of how the coming week will pan out, but it does seem that rain is expected for at least tomorrow and Thursday and perhaps beyond as well as we enter the Golden Week holidays on Friday.

As noted below, the top Riesen Grat course at Hakuba Happo-one is now closed but the Grat lift is still operating for the benefit of climbers only.

Hakuba Goryu/Hakuba 47 operations are just the Panorama Course (Goryu) and Route 8 (47), all accessed via the Hakuba Goryu Gondola (the base area of Hakuba 47 is now closed).

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 26th April 2016, 8:55am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Hello from Nozawa.

The warm spring conditions continue and so does the snow melt. The resort now has Uenotaira as completely closed (it's suddenly looking almost completely dry and brown!) and just the top Yamabiko A-D runs and Kokenashi now remain open. They're doing all they can to keep enough snow up there on the courses to keep going but warm that there is a chance that they won't be able to make it until the end of Golden Week which is when they planned to continue until. There's people who want to get in the last turns of the season though, so if you are one of those it's best to try and get here as quickly as possible... less snow every day.

This morning the sun is out and it's going to be another warm day.

Rain is expected to start sometime during the day tomorrow and continue through into Thursday as well.

Fingers crossed it will be better on Friday. Actually some forecasts even mention snowfall up top around Friday which is interesting. Others completely don't mention that at all. Looks like conditions for later in the week are difficult to predict.

Next update at the end of the week.

---

Official info at time of writing on Tuesday 26th April 2016 (subject to change):

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 26th April 2016, 9:02am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Morning from Shiga Kogen.

As you can notice from the updated resort info below, there has been some fairly big changes with a number of resorts actually closing through lack of snow when they were last week still mentioning planned operations until the end of Golden Week. It's really not at all surprising given the snow situation - there's hardly any of it left - though it would have been nice to have more official word of warning... that's the way things are though I suppose.

But anyway, yes, the snow has continued to quickly melt away and we are left with very limited operations now at the Ichinose Family, Kumanoyu and Shibutoge (and Mammoth from Friday) areas. Whether they will all be able to continue until their planned closing dates is another matter.

Fine weather this morning with blue skies and sunshine.

Rain expected to move in by tomorrow and continue until Thursday. Is that snow on the forecast for Friday?!? Keep an eye on the forecast below...

---

Planned end of season dates for Shiga Kogen resort areas - subject to change!

Takamagahara Mammoth
The quad lift plans to be operating from Friday 29th April until Sunday 8th May.

Ichinose Family
The Ichinose Number 2 pair B lift plans to be operating until Sunday 8th May.

Kumanoyu
The Kumanoyu Number 2 pair A and B lifts plan to be operating until Thursday 5th May (mid station to base open).

Shibutoge
The Shibutoge lift plans to operate until Sunday 1st May.

---

All other areas of Shiga Kogen not mentioned above are now closed.

Zao Now!

Tuesday 26th April 2016, 10:09am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 30cm
Good morning from Zao.

Nature continues to move full on into spring (early summer?!) with warm temperatures and snow melting away quickly now.

Almost inevitably, some of the areas that were planning to remain open until early next month are now able to and have now closed. Utopia had it's last day yesterday and from today it is just the Chuo Number 1 pair lift that remains operating and serving open ski course. Snow is getting pretty thin on the ground up there too - see the webcam image from this morning below to get an idea of what remains now.

The Ropeways also remain open of course, but apart from the Zao Chuo Ropeway taking people up to the skiable area, they are for sightseeing.

Fine weather today and more tomorrow though perhaps some more cloud. Expect some rain on Thursday and Friday... maybe even some snow in higher areas on Friday?!

Friday is the first day of the "Golden Week" holidays here in Japan. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week are also national holidays.
