Nozawa Onsen Now!

VERY LOW thick clouds in the village streets this morning!
SNOW SNOW SNOW (up very high)! Yes you read it right! There was a recent snowfall dusting in the Nozawa region (two days ago) and most of the mountain peaks got the first foundation layer put down for the creation of the usual super thick bases we get in this area of Japan. This morning we all awoke to VERY LOW clouds throughout the village streets. People were walking into poles all over town ;p The phrase "brrr it's fricken freezing" came to mind more than once. So the powder gods are restlessly fiddling with the temperature and snow knobs way up in the clouds, or should I say way down here in the clouds. Our Autumn fashion choices just won't cut it here anymore, it's time to put on the thicker layers, a good sign for an early season we hope. Stay tuned! &:^)? Read more ...

Cloud layer just above the summit of Annupuri with occasional sleet down into the village.
Finally the first cold front coming straight out of Siberia crossed Hokkaido today. Unfortunately the cold air was also very dry and there has been little precipitation. Still Mt Youtei had a nice dusting overnight and there was even the odd pellet of sleet right down to Kutchan. It's been very windy with wind chill factors well below zero all day making a walk around the village uncomfortable unless you're fully rugged up. Shouldn't be long now for the first real dump!
There is also a new lift opening this season. Possibly lacking inspiration they have called it No Name Lift. Yep I'm not joking! Anyway it will replace the rope tows that gave access from the top of the Hirafu Gondola to Hanazono. So now if the top lifts are on wind hold, no more waiting in long queues and struggling on the rope tows.
