Fine and sunny
Good morning from Yuzawa.
It's another lovely morning here and it is going to be warming up to around 26C in town according to the local forecast. More sunshine is due over the coming weekend as well, so we should be enjoying nice weather conditions to end the ski season.
So yes, the coming weekend is the last weekend of the season up at Kagura and indeed anywhere here in Niigata Prefecture. Down in town it is sometimes pretty hard to believe that you can actually still ski and board on real snow in Yuzawa, but you can! While the snow on that open course at Kagura might well be somewhat less than pure white in places (!), there's still a decent strip of snow to slide down if you want some last runs of the season.
See the photos (from yesterday) below to know what to expect.
To get to the open slope, you need to get the Mitsumata Ropeway, the Mitsumata quad and then the Kagura Gondola to get over to the main Kagura area. On the way back at the end of the day, you need to get the Kagura Gondola and then a Mitsumata pair lift. And then either take the Mitsumata quad back down to the Ropeway or slide down the artificial 'snow mats'. If you want to avoid using the snow mats, there's some walking involved - a total of about 900m on the way over to Kagura and about 400m on the way back to Mitsumata Ropeway.
Last weekend Mitsumata Ropeway opened at 7:30am and I guess they might well do the same this weekend too.
Update: confirmed... Mitsumata Ropeway to open from 7:30am both tomorrow and Sunday.
Note that the Dragondola is also operating at the moment - connecting Naeba with Tashiro - but it is for sightseeing only... no skiing or boarding action possible there. The only riding available is that one main run at Kagura.
We will post a final Yuzawa Now report along with the end-of-season message on Monday 28th May.Read more ...
