Hakuba Now!

Monday 25th April 2011, 9:41am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain, snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's snowing again on the upper slopes in Hakuba this morning. Rain and sleet in places down at village level but definitely snow up there, so hopefully we will see some new cm up there before it clears up. And it will likely start clearing up this afternoon.

Visibility up on those slopes this morning now so good as the mountains are shrouded in cloud. Earlier on it was actually dry and more of the mountains on show. Right now it is about 6 degrees in the village.

The forecast for both tomorrow and Wednesday is cloud and rain at times.

Official snow depths and operations @ Monday 25th April AM:

Hakuba Goryu:
The upper slopes at Goryu plan to be open until 8th May.
The Gondola and Alps No3 pair lifts are operating.
The Alps No1 pair will be open on Saturdays/Sundays and from 29th April until 8th May.
Top to bottom skiing still ok.
Alps daira - 180cm.

Hakuba 47:
All lifts except Line D lift operating with all courses still open.
47 plans to be open into May.
Top to bottom skiing still ok.
Snow depth (upper) - 115cm

Happo-one:
The Gondola, Alpen Quad, Kurobishi No3 pair and Panorama pair lifts are operating. The upper slopes are planning to be open until 5th May. All of the lower lifts are now closed for the season - you need to take the Gondola down to the base at the end of the day. Course areas open are: Kurobishi, Usagidaira and Panorama.
The Grad quad is also open on weekends and during Golden week, at those times opening up that top course as well.
Usagidaira/Kurobishi - 120cm

Tsugaike Kogen:
The Gondola as well as the Tsuga No2 pair and Han-no-ki high speed pair lifts in the upper area of the resort are operating. It is possible to ski/board right down from the top to the bottom of the resort via the Han-no-ki and lower Karamatsu courses.

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 25th April 2011, 9:57am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We had some blue sky on show even this morning, but things have clouded over since then and it's just grey and cloudy at the moment. A fairly strong wind blowing as well, though that does not seem to be affecting lifts up at Kagura. If they whip up any more though it well could. Looking at the webcam for Kagura it doesn't look busy at all.... a contrast to the crowds up there yesterday for a fine day.

We may well see some rainfall this afternoon, even up on the upper slopes where it will be borderline either rain or snow.

Snow cover still good down to Mitsumata.

Today until Thursday it is just Kagura that is open. Friday is the start of the Golden Week holidays in Japan and for that period Kandatsu Kogen will once again be part open.

Official snow depth @ Monday 25th April 2011 AM

Kagura:
350cm

Operations at Kagura (25th-28th April):

Kagura:
- Mitsumata Ropeway
- Mitsumata No1 Quad
- Mitsumata No2 Pair
- Kagura Gondola
- Kagura No1 Quad
- Kagura No5 Pair   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 25th April 2011, 10:06am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain/snow higher
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After some fine weather yesterday and warm conditions during the day, we are this morning seeing clouds in the sky. Poor visibility on most of the mountain this morning and light rain is starting to fall, perhaps even sleet/snow on those upper slopes. I can't confirm that as I haven't been up there but that is as per forecast.

Snow on the lower slopes has been retreating quickly the last week or so. Bottom slopes near the village are now much more 'ground on show' than snow cover and we can expect that snow retreat to keep happening at a fast pace. The lower slopes that were still open are now closed leaving just upper slopes open now, as below:

Yamabiko D course
Yamabiko E course
Uenotaira
Paradise
Uenotaira Snow Park

Each of those courses are still over 1km in length and so still a fair bit of terrain available. Especially when you consider we are closing in on May!

I have to make an update; I fear I may have encouraged people to not ski today. This is not good, especially when the rain stopped, we did get a little wind (OK, it is a bit strong at times), but it's turned pretty clear and nice. Afternoon free? Come on out!
