Weather conditions: Varying mists, clouds and sun. Conditions changing quickly across the hill

Rain all day yesterday at base level meant white trees and slopes down to about 900 meters.

To be honest, it's more psychological than scientific at this point, isn't it? The snow looks great, it reminds you to get the gear ready and maybe even to jog and climb a little bit, and just makes you feel good. It takes that first big dump of 50cm or more to really start things up in Myoko (I can't really remember a slow base build-up to opening—it's almost always that big snowfall that then keeps on going). It's coming, though—it just looks like winter out there.

The weekend saw some clear and mild conditions with winter feeling far away once again, though it has been cloudy since then for the most part with some rain at times and this morning there is some fresh snowfall visible on the upper slopes. There is a decent chance that the clouds will clear up somewhat today and we will be left with clearer conditions, with good weather and a high of around 11 degrees forecast for tomorrow.

We can perhaps expect some snow again higher up with rain lower down on Friday and perhaps again Sunday but apart from that there still isn't a considerable snowfall event on the weekly forecast as it stands so we need to keep patient. Or try to be at least! Looks like it should be getting colder around Monday so hopefully that is a good sign.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Cloud

Not a whole lot to report here, though it seems the upper slopes of Kagura have seen another sprinkling of snow - but just a sprinkling. Right now it is just cloudy in Yuzawa but the forecast has us in for a sunny day and more of that tomorrow.

Having said that --- Kagura seem to be planning on opening tomoorow! The plan is for 600m of the main course, 15-30m in width and serviced by the Kagura No1 pair lift will open tomorrow. Snow is looking very thin on the ground up there so we can only think that the snow machines will be working overtime until then to get something capable of opening. The resort plans to have the Mitsumata Ropeway operating and then taking riders over to Kagura by bus. So there you go - we'll be checking this information again later on today to see if there is an update or change of plan and will post if there is a change.   Read more ...

We might not have had much more than sprinklings of snow - another one since yesterday afternoon - but Kagura are planning on opening tomorrow!

They are looking to open up the 600m run of the main course, serviced by the Kagura No1 pair lift will open tomorrow. There isn't much natural snow up there and looking at the webcam there doesn't seem to be that much snow-machine-made snow either, but they are looking to have a '15-30m wide' course ready for tomorrow, so the machines will be busy.

The Mitsumata Ropeway will be operating and a shuttle bus to take people over to Kagura.

As for the forecast, not really much snow can be expected up until Monday evening when it looks like things might get colder.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sun, clear

We have had a mixed bunch of weather since the last report - fine sunny conditions over the weekend and more cloudy and wet early in the week.

This morning is another fine and sunny day after the early clouds moved on and the snow has pretty much melted away other than on the man-made slope that is still open at Kumanoyu. It's keeping fairly chilly though but should warm up a bit as the day progresses and the sun does it's thing.

Just taking a look at the forecast for the coming week and it looks like there is more sun than snow lined up unfortunately, though things look set to get colder at the end of the weekend and into Monday so fingers crossed that next week we might see the snow we are all waiting for.   Read more ...
