Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: MOstly clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow kept coming down slowly yesterday and we got a small bit of settlement in the form of dry fluffy powder. Not a huge fall with Goryu reporting about 5cms of fresh but those who haven't got a taste of any powder this season will be stoked to dust some on the sides of the runs and there's sure to be some windblown stashes out there.

Another cold morning bottoming at -6 this morning and around -4 now with predominantly clear skies and nice views.

Weather conditions: Sun, some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday showed us quite a lot of varied weather. It started off fine but by lunchtime the clouds were appearing and then the rain/sleet started. After a cold night, this morning there are wispy clouds hanging around but a fair bit of blue sky. The mountainsides around town also have a white sprinkling this morning and there has been a sprinkling of snow in town - though sadly nothing that will last. Kagura is reporting 5cm this morning.

After what looks like will be a generally fine day, the snow is still set to start falling tomorrow evening (afternoon?) The sooner the better and we'll keep you up to date with that.

All resorts that aren't open in the area are now on standby to open up as soon as there is enough snow.   Read more ...

A bit more snow yesterday with low temps to maintain the levels. Today's the only sunny day for the rest of the week as snowfall is expected from tomorrow onwards:) The morning sun yesterday caused slight melting, with the evening snow bringing levels back to their original height.

Sun all day.   Read more ...

New snowfall: --

Light cloud but a generally sunny morning here in Nozawa Onsen. No new snow reported by the resort overnight, although it was falling lightly even in the village into the evening (Probably only a centimeter or so though). Currently it is -10 degrees up on Yamabiko, where the snow depth has increased to 60cm.

The current conditions are predicted to persist until tomorrow afternoon, when the wind will strengthen and turn Northwesterly bringing snow with it. Heavy snow is expected for Thursday night, and it is forecast to keep falling for Friday and Saturday. Fingers crossed for a Christmas present for everyone!

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 24th December 2008, 8:50am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the clouds rolled in later in the day and temperatures kept low. It was a cold evening and overnight we have had another sprinkling of snow - though again nothing to affect the snow depth numbers at the resorts. Right now though the sun is out and we are in for another day of fine weather.

It is looking likely still that the snow clouds we are all hoping for will be moving in tomorrow afternoon and we can expect some decent snowfall from Thursday through to Saturday. The words 'heavy snow' are being talked about - let's hope they are right!   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: High cloud cover. Cold but warming to 0 C.

The Morning After

Ouch! Really hurting today after skiing with the kids yesterday. It must be the relatively slow speeds I am forced to use with them. It couldn't be my almost complete lack of physcial conditioning. Nope.

No new snow overnight. Cold this morning, but warming up to 0 C later today. Thin high clouds, mostly sun. A very nice day to go skiing, but I think I'll have to take the day off and recover.

The Prince resort is getting serious about opening the Kitanomine bottom runs. A continuous stream of dump trucks arriving near the gondola station full of snow, and Mr. Snowcat is pushing it around to build up a base near the lodge. Looks like they want to be ready for the holiday rush, and Mother Nature hasn't been cooperating. Nice to see them taking concerted action.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 24th December 2008, 9:43am
Weather conditions: Sunny blue skies with light wispy cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday saw snow through the afternoon and so now Kagura, Tashiro & Mitsumata are reporting an extra 5cm whilst Naeba is now reporting 30cm on the top half of the mountain which if ridden, flows down to that lovely 50cm strip of snow just in front of the Prince Hotel - and yes it does feel like it's only 50cm wide (not deep) when it's full of the ski schools and the hotel punters.

Things are looking up though, the temperature is still low with a trusty -4 degrees down at the 900m mark and of course that lovely forecast is looking a sure set for a white Winter Solstice! Starting in the afternoon on the 25th (Will it really ?), and then gearing into a heavy dumping from Christmas night onwards!

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 24th December 2008, 10:02am
Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More good falls of snow yesterday putting down another 20-30cm. The resort is not reporting an increase in depth up high but there were quite strong winds and there should be plenty of deep turns to be had in drifting areas. Snowfalls will continue throughout today and through tonight. Overnight a warm front will move over the region as a low pressure system approaches from the west. This will raise temps to above freezing at the base of the mountain and xmas day will probably see a mix of heavy wet snow and sleet. I'm not going to mention the r#%& word but it is possible that a little may precede the cold front that will come through overnight tomorrow. Anyway once the cold front moves through we should see copious amounts of the white stuff fall right through the weekend.
