Minakami Now!

Monday 24th December 2007, 8:26am
Weather conditions: Wet snow at the valley level, heavy snow in the mountains.\r\n
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow started falling early this morning (around 5:00) and continues to fall above 1000m, but it is very wet snow at the valley level. The snow is expected to become dryer from mid morning and continue throughout the afternoon.

Houdaigi has received 4 cm and Tenjindaira 10cm of new snow thus far, with up to 40 cm expected to accumulate by the end of the day.

The forecast for the remainder of the week seems reasonably clear at this stage as a large area of high pressure engulfs Japan. Hopefully the colder weather fronts will keep on pushing through from Russia to bring more snow before the new year.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Overcast, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was exceptionally clear and sunny but provided very little fresh off-piste skiing. There were some untracked areas higher up and further out, but nonthing truly rewarding near the lift lines and groomed areas. The cover seemed considerably firmer than earlier in the week. Nonetheless, it was a terrific day for hooning on the groomers and a lot of riders were out there cranking turns.

It looks like we have an interesting setup of highs to our east and north east, and lows to our west and north west. If this persists for a couple of days it should funnel some cold air down from the continent and right over us. After yesterday's warmer conditions we could certainly use it.

When the heavens gave us some rain from about 10pm last night things were looking a little grim. So it was a bit of a surprise this morning with the snow falling so heavily in the village, it's the wet kind and there's about 20cm on the deck and it's still coming down.

There is the occasional gust of wind and it's -2 in the village. Looks to be a powder day then - good news for all the people who made the effort to get up into the mountains.

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 24th December 2007, 10:49am
Weather conditions: Rain lower, snow higher
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday really was relatively warm again and it started raining in the evening and overnight - quite heavy rain at times with some fairly strong winds as well.

This morning unfortunately it is still raining down at town level, but get a bit higher up and it is sleet and then higher up snow. It is cloudy but fairly bright at the moment. Temperatures are lower than yesterday and look, though still at around +2, though it should get colder later on this afternoon and we can hope for down here as well. Fingers crossed, as there is hardly any snow down at town level now.

Up at Kagura and Gala the snow is falling and they (Kagura) expect up to 20cm by the end of the day up there.

All resorts in Yuzawa apart from the small Ipponsugi and Nunoba near the ropeway are open now. Those two areas will open as soon as there is enough snow. Yuzawa Kogen seems to be closed today due to the strong winds up there.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 24th December 2007, 10:56am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud, windy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a colder start to the day and things are feeling much more winterlike after a relatively mild weekend in many regions, including Shiga Kogen.

There is about 10cm of fresh snowfall to report which has considerably increased the quality of the snow out there. As well as the snow and low visibility today there is also a fairly strong wind blowing about that is affecting some more exposed lifts (particularly Okushiga and Yokoteyama/Shibutoge) and it looks like we can expect that to be the case for most of the day.

The snow clouds look set to clear up by tomorrow and a fine day is currently forecast.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 24th December 2007, 10:56am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Day three of the Japanese long weekend and Xmas Eve is seeing a lot of people dressed in Santa suits for free tickets. Rain last night turned to wet snow in the early hours and conditions today have seen a mix of rain, wet snow and some sunshine poking through with snow falling now.

Lower lifts are running though not at full capacity.

This weekend is a nice white Christmas in Hakuba. Enjoy the festivities happening around town!

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Rain last night and snow/poor visibility today makes this a day to keep out of the backcountry. Exercise extreme caution if heading off-piste today.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 24th December 2007, 15:10pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy, intermittent snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Lift operations were delayed until about ten this morning due to electrical storms. When the gondola got going everyone piled up the mountain for a great days skiing and snowboarding.

The resort is reporting no new snow, but actually is has been snowing on and off since the early hours and conditions are great. In the village hail-like pellets fell but up top it was big flakes. The snow was not the lightest of powder but still plenty of fun. The skyline course was rutted in the middle with grass showing through down the bottom, but the sides were fresh even later this afternoon. There is barely anyone here, several lifts seem to be running continuously with no-one on them, and even on uenotaira and yamabiko you won't have to wait to get back up the mountain.

The forecast is for the snow to stop and the sun to come out the next two days.    Read more ...
