Fog early on this morning with it looking like it will be a cloudy start to the day with fairly mild temperatures. The snow that remains in town level areas is not good, we are still in need of that good snowfall.

Luckily it seems that snow is on the menu on and off for the next few days - all of us keeping fingers crossed that a decent amount of snow will come of it.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Snow

Yesterday, birthday powder continued, with night skiing providing some great turns.

This morning 15cm+ of new snow has collected, and the flakes continue to fall. Temperature remains cool, and wind conditions still. Visibility is still moderate, so the clearest runs are in the trees. Tetsu's is today's pick.

Last night the annual Niseko Avalanche Meeting was held at Moiwa ski resort, with over one hundred people attending. The 'Niseko Local Rules' system was discussed, and chairman and local avalanche expert Akio Shinya made a plea for common sense - when riding, think about what is below you, and is it safe? He encouraged people not to take friends to areas above their riding experience/ability.

According to Shinya-san, good December snow fall, mixed with fluctuating temperatures means extra avalanche caution is required this season. Snow stability reports (Japanese only) will continue to be posted at each lift everyday. On days deemed to be high-risk, English notices will also be posted. He requested that everyone be careful on the high-risk days.

The consensus of the meeting was another fatality free year would give more momentum to the 'Niseko Local Rules' system, and would enable more areas to be opened up for all to enjoy.

Santa Claus will be coming to the slopes today. Look for him at around 10 am and try to get a present. And ask him to bring snow. The bottom slopes are still open but you can't really call it fun skiing there. Yamabiko on the other hand offers great conditions.
Cloudy with some sun right now. Enjoy the day and Merry Christmas.   Read more ...

"The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in..." (Joe Strummer RIP).

Yes folks, hard, icy conditions persist here. At freezing point at the moment, with the skies overcast and the upper slopes shrouded in mist. What "crowds" there were over the weekend have all gone home.

47/Goryu is free to sliding Santas tomorrow. Go on, you know you want to! Ho ho ho!   Read more ...
