Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 24th April 2016, 7:57am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, hazy early on; fine weather forecast
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
It was lovely weather yesterday morning, with it almost feeling borderline 'hot' at times rising to a fair bit beyond 20 degrees.

Things got more cloudy during the afternoon and also cooled down a bit.

Early this morning it's bright but it looks very hazy out there as well as there being quite a bit of cloud around. It's forecast to be a fine day though with the sun shining. It shouldn't be warming up as much as yesterday today.

As mentioned yesterday, today is the last day of the season for GALA Yuzawa resort which means that from tomorrow just the Kagura resort will remain open in the region. Both the Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways remain operating, more details below.

And in Kagura news, they have announced that from today the Panorama Course and the lower part of the Technical Course are no longer open. They also mention the chance of other changes ahead...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 24th April 2016, 8:31am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, some fog early on
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
It's a cloudy early morning with fog in places as well. Forecasts do tell us to expect some sunshine though today so perhaps it will clear up. Temperatures again expected to be approaching 20 degrees in the village.

The continued warmer conditions means that snow continues to quickly melt away from the mountainsides and resorts are busy working with the available snow to keep things going at the moment. It appears to be something of a struggle - there's only so much you can do when there's just not enough snow to work with!

Quite a bit of news from the Hakuba 47 resort -- today will be the last day for their Gondola, Line AB and Line C lifts. They are also noting that there is a good chance that Route 2, Route 5 and Route 8 may need to close during the day today depending on the snow situation. Because of this they are strongly recommending that people get up to the snow via Hakuba Goryu today. From tomorrow only the top Line E lift of Hakuba 47 will remain open, but you'll need to get up there via the Gondola of Hakuba Goryu. Hope that makes sense!

It's all getting rather limited now. That's what you get with a smaller-than-usual base.

Upcoming Golden Week holidays:

* Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend)
* Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week)
* Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend)

Niseko Now!

Sunday 24th April 2016, 8:31am
Weather conditions: Blue skies, just a bit of cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Good morning from Niseko.

There's lots of blue sky again, just a bit of white cloud here and there. A nice morning and similar conditions are also forecast for tomorrow as well. In fact the forecast is looking generally clear and sunny over the coming week and temperatures look stable as well (no big warm up just now). Today a high of around 11C is expected at base.

The official lower snow depth at Niseko Grand Hirafu now down to 0cm. That means that you now can no longer ride back down to base at Niseko Grand Hirafu - the Ace Number 2 quad lift is still operating as a means to get up to the open area and back down to base as well.

'Golden Week' ahead!

Golden Week is a number of national holidays that happen close to each other giving lots of people a nice holiday in late April and early May. Most tourist spots get very busy as a result! Depending on what days they fall, some years it is a considerably long period. This year, the actual national holidays are 'Showa Day' on Friday 29th April, 'Constitution Day' on Tuesday 3rd May, 'Greenery Day' on Wednesday 4th May and 'Children's Day' on Thursday May 5th. This means that this year Golden Week looks like this:

* Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend)
* Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week)
* Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend)

No doubt some folk will be taking Monday 2nd May and Friday 6th May as a holiday as well giving them a 10 day break. Nice.

Thursday 5th May is scheduled to be the last day of the snow season here in Niseko.
