Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Blizzard
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As of 9:00am, all mountains lower lifts only. Gondolas all closed.

Well, the snow is finally falling again, and the good news is that it's expected to continue ALL WEEK! We had over 20cm of fresh powder overnight, and it hasn't let up all morning. Strong winds means we've got to ski the bottom runs and just be patient until the upper lifts open, as there's going to be plenty of powder when we can eventually get up there!

Avalanche Danger EXTREME above tree line
Avalanche Danger HIGH below tree line

With all this new snow we have gotten over night, and looking like it will continue, there is high to extreme danger forecasted over the next little while. The new snow is perceived to not bond well to the January 14th Rain crust, nor the pockets of hard wind slab. The Crust covers every aspect at every elevation to the peaks of the mountains thus all aspects will be very prone to natural and skier triggered avalanches that will travel fast and far if they do slide. The East and South East bowls and gullies have10 cm ~ 30 cm of hard wind slab over this crust that may also cause an instability between the rain crust and new snow. Be very cautious of wind loaded south slopes, expect deposits of 70 cm plus, and be cautious of weak cornices on those same south faces.

The next few days may not be the best days to head in to the Back Country or off piste from ski hills because of the high risk, but will be great on the slopes within the resorts.

If you do go, be extra cautious and be very sure to wear your beacon, carry your shovel and probe and know how to use them .    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snow, strong winds
New snowfall: --

Strong winds and snow blowing all over the place this morning.

It was a noisy night with strong winds and it's hard to actually say how much new snow there is as it has been blown around - maybe around 20cm at town level.

The strong winds mean that Gala are not going to be open today. Kagura is not open either - though they are still hoping for a chance to open up just the Mitsumata area later on if the weather improves. Iwappara and Kandatsu are limiting operations to just a few lifts and other resorts are probably doing the same - we advise to check with the resorts if you plan on braving the conditions today!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 23rd January 2006, 10:00am
Weather conditions: Blizzard
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Welcome to Blizzard Monday! High winds, lots of snowfall and all neck warmers on full alert. I suspect the reason that the depth readings are deeper down low has something to do with the fact that no-one can go out in that weather to read the measuring devices up top. Or possibly its due to the clouds that are dumping, are all very low down, but judging by the local closed circuit cameras the first reason seems more likely. Gondolas have been closed as winds increased high up this morning. Lower regions will be functional with only very few people daring to carve in this weather. It's 10am and I see virtually no-one at Higake apart from ski patrol staff. If it calms down by lunchtime there will be brilliant fresh powder and possibly an impressive new depth reading. It has been like this since late last night.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sunny but clouds moving in.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The cold temperatures have continued this morning after a relatively clear night. The temp in Kutchan dipped down to near -19. Currently blue sky can still be seen but ominous looking clouds are moving in and the weather radar is showing snow should hit the region very soon. There are strong winds up high which are restricting lift operation in Hanazono and Hirafu. Higashiyama and Annupuri appear to be a little more sheltered and all lifts are running. With temps close to -20 on the upper mountain and strong winds you'll really need to cover up as much as possible as there'll be a risk of frostbite on exposed skin.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 23rd January 2006, 10:20am
Weather conditions: Strong winds, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
What can I say.... after a wild windy night we wake this morning and none of the lifts in the region are operating - looks like today Shiga Kogen is "closed".... if conditions improve at all some lifts might open up, but that seems unlikely at this point.

It's very cold today as well.   Read more ...
