Quite a piling of snow last night and yesterday. The resorts are opening to a sunny and calm aftermath with temperatures continuing their plummet into winter proper:)
White Christmases aren't just for mere dreams. The reality is here, and here to stay, with snow forecasted every day this week.

This pm, snows will return with even colder temps than yesterday, maintaining present levels despite the sun.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Patches of blue with dark clouds above 1600m

Snow was on the radar but we were let off light with only a sprinkle in the valley and 5cms of fresh on the runs at Goryu. Bottom slopes are still brown with a shake of white on top though there may be some stashes of wind-blown on the sides of the runs. Temperatures really came down yesterday but we missed the precipitation unfortunately.

26th and 27th are still showing big snowmen and we really need two solid days of snow to get our base on.

Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --

Some good falls of snow late yesterday and overnight has seen the snowdepth up top break through the 1.5m mark. Up high there should be some great turns today through some super light and dry powder. Down lower I think you'll still be hitting the hard base but it should be considerably softer than the last couple of days.
Some further snowfalls will continue throughout the day. Tomorrow a weak low will approach from the west and the winds will turn more southerly raising temps up to around freezing at the base. Snowfalls will continue but the snow will definitely be a little heavier. The milder air will continue at first on Thursday but as the low moves through to the east cold air will move in later in the day. From boxing day it is going to be very cold again with good snowfalls throughout the weekend.

Weather conditions: Sunny blue skies
New snowfall: --

So it stayed cloudy yesterday as the breeze got a little stronger and things seemed to get colder. The snow started in the late afternoon and so now this morning we have a bit on the ground. Not a great deal down in the village but the main hill looks a great deal better than it did yesterday with it's sugar frosted trees.

Blue skies this morning with the snow canons at Asagai Gelende still spewing out their snow in the cold temperatures this morning, so I guess the temperatures should stay low today and hopefully that's it for the next few months.

Gondola Number 1 is also open today!   Read more ...

Snow? What snow!? This morning the blue skies are with us again, hardly a cloud to be seen. It was cold overnight - just about dipping down into minus numbers - but down at town level and lower mountains there is nothing exciting to report which is disappointing. Actually, there was a slight sprinkling of snow in town last night, but that will soon melt away this morning.

Kagura had 10cm of new snow overnight, with 5cm at Mitsumata but thats not enough to let them put that shuttle bus away at Mitsumata (taking people from the top of Mitsumata Ropeway to the bottom of the Kagura Gondola).

Flurries of snow might happen later on today, but surely we can't expect much.

Thursday night looks like what we have been waiting for for so long. There is a fair bit of snowfall forecast from Thursday night through Sunday.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Light cloud over the village, clear up top

Low cloud is hanging over the village this morning, but the cameras show the top of Yamabiko bathed in sunlight. The snow continued to fall throughout the day yesterday and well into the evening, delivering 10cm of fresh as reported by the resort. As the freezing level dropped snow started to cover the lower slopes and also the village, with at least 3cm visible on roofs and railings.

It is currently -10 degrees up on Yamabiko, and -4 in the village. This cold snap is expected to continue throughout the week and should bring more snow, especially on Thursday night and Friday when the freezing level will fall to sea level.

Lifts open:
Nagasaka Gondola
Hikage Gondola
Yamabiko Quad
Yamabiko Quad #2

Uenodaira Quad

Weather conditions: Fine

Yokoteyama is reporting 10cm of fresh snow this morning and it's a cold one early on after a very cold night. The sun is out now though and we have fine weather once again in the region

Pretty much all of the individual ski areas of Shiga Kogen are now at least part open, though they are all are in need of snowfall to really get going and for the whole area to open up properly.

The decent snowfall still looks set to be with us around Thursday - for today though it's another fine and sunny one.   Read more ...

At present it is a sunny blue sky day but there is more snow on the forecast for this afternoon continuing through to this evening.

Christmas day looks like it will be nice weather for a BBQ with the snow returning again on Friday and Saturday.   Read more ...

Apres Ski Report.

Headed out first thing this morning to ski with the kids. First time out for them this year. They had a blast.

It snowed about 10 cm during the day yesterday, and nothing appreciable overnight.

It was -11 C at 9:00 this morning. The snow was good. Mostly cloudy all day, with occassional light snow. There are a few ice spots in the middle of the popular runs, but nothing major. The snow is good.

No snow forecast for tomorrow, so we'll just sit tight and wait for more.
