Niseko Now!

Sunday 23rd December 2007, 7:50am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Once again, it snowed off and on all day. There was not that much fresh overnight as it just covered the fresh tracks from the day before. But I managed to head to one of my secret spots and had some beautiful untracked. Visibility dropped right down during certain parts of the day due to heavy snowfall.

The thermometer at the Ace Hill Restaurant showed -8 degrees at 11am while the one at the bottom of the Gondola had -1.

The official Niseko numbers have not yet been updated with todays snow level readings as yet, but it's a safe bet that between 15 and 25 centimeters fell at the top yesterday. There is no cloud at present although it looks like some slow moving weather will come across as the day progresses.

Mind your step in the village - it is getting rather slippery.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Sunday 23rd December 2007, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Overcast, light snow in the mountains.\r\n
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The forecast snow did hit last night but only brought 5cm to the valley. The upper mountains however, received around 4cm of fresh snow (Houdaigi, Minakami Kogen, Tenjindaira) with snow still falling lightly. The snow is expected to clear up mid morning in the mountains with the sun forecast to show itself this afternoon.

There is more precipitation now forecast for tomorrow which may be rain at the valley level but should be snow above 1000m. The remainder of the week looks like cool but clear weather as a large area of high pressure engulfs Japan.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 23rd December 2007, 9:02am
Weather conditions: white sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There's been some snow overnight, but not a lot, maybe 6cm which has been sodden down with the moisture in the air. It's a bit warm this morning, what with the temperature gauge sitting on zero, there's some light rain in the air and the sky is White. Expect freeze-thaw conditions on the mountain today.

Again there is a lot of activity in the village as people still seem to be arriving for the Christmas holidays.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 23rd December 2007, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was the first official day of the season up on the mountain and it was a good one. It stayed dry up top, and there were almost no lift queues apart from the first gondola up the mountain. There was no new snow and none today either.

The forecast is for a little snow to fall tomorrow morning and then to clear again. It is already above freezing at the top of the mountain and will get warmer this afternoon. It looks like we need that snow to fall tomorrow morning or it could be an icy day.

The village was dead all day yesterday with people up the mountain but it came to life at night for a busy evening.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 23rd December 2007, 9:55am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was generally cloudy and overcast throughout the day. It looks like more of the same this morning. The roads are a bit wet with some sleet/rain earlier on, even higher up at Kagura, but that has stopped for the moment with status currently at "cloudy". It is about 5 degrees and so a rather mild morning and even up at Kagura it will probably stay around or just above zero today.

We're on the middle day of the three day weekend here, and the slopes were perhaps not as busy as expected yesterday... and looks to be similar today as well. It is still fairly early on, but not too many crowds up at Kagura as yet.

Happily it looks likely that tomorrow temperatures will drop bringing a good chance of snowfall in the area.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 23rd December 2007, 10:04am
Weather conditions: Low cloud, overcast, fog, light snow in places
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is fog, low cloud here in the area this morning and it is quite a mild one too - with the temperature above zero in a few areas. Okushiga is reporting -5 and Yokoteyama -3, they are the coldest parts of the region as is often the case. There is no change in the snow depths this morning as we have only had a sprinkling of snow overnight and at the moment there is light snow falling in some parts of Shiga Kogen.

Poor visibility today though so care needs to be taken out there.

Tomorrow should be colder and bringing with it a good chance of further snowfall.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 23rd December 2007, 10:13am
Weather conditions: Cloudy (high clouds at 2500m)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Day two of the Japanese long weekend. No fresh snow to report, nice groomed runs and a huge line this morning for for the Happo Gondola. Lower lifts are running though not at full capacity. Cloudy morning but some sun poking through as the day progresses.

This weekend is a nice white Christmas in Hakuba. So get up to the slopes and enjoy the festivities happening around town.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

The advisory stays the same as previous:

Huge amounts of snow last week combined with strong winds some days still means heavily loaded lee slopes and huge unstable cornices. Exercise due caution if planning on heading out backcountry today.

Furano Now!

Sunday 23rd December 2007, 12:26pm
Weather conditions: blue sky, some cloud, bright sunshine. beautiful crisp morning.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful day on the slopes today. Bluebird skies, no a breath of wind. A real joyous atmosphere around the mountian. A little busy on the top of Kitanomine Zone, so make sure you control your speed on the groomers up there. Overall the mountain is in great condition, the groomers are hard packed now, and a lot of fun. Fresh snow is still available off the sides as well.

A crack has opened up on Furikozawa also. The recent warm temperatures now mean Kuma and Furiko both have cracks. Ski Patrol have ropped them off, so please respect the patrol warnings as it is quite dangerous.

There is not quite enough cover yet to have all groomed runs completely flat. Patrol have again marked a number of hazards, particularly a few ditches (holes) here and there.

Last night we had the opening of the Kan Kan Mura (Winter Village) site. This Kan Kan Mura will be open through March. Kan Kan in Japanese means "Cold Cold", and yes, last night the snow dome was very cold. If you plan to make a trip to the Ice Bar up there, make sure you rug up. The Winter Village is sponsored by Kirin, and each guest can get their first drink for free, check with your accommodation provider for the drink tickets.

The annual New Years Eve fireworks will again light the skies this year, so make sure you check them out on the 31st.
