Niseko Now!

Saturday 23rd April 2016, 8:33am
Weather conditions: Fog, cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 10cm
Good morning from Niseko and after the fine weather yesterday visibility is much more limited this morning with lots of cloud and fog on the mountain... and with some wind up there as well it's enough to be affecting lifts. At the time of writing there are no lifts at Grand Hirafu moving just yet - hopefully just delayed - and the top lift at Annupuri is on hold as well. We might get some rain thrown into the mix this morning too but things should be cleared up later on and fine weather is expected tomorrow. It's cooled down today a bit though today and tomorrow is also expected to be cooler, not rising much above 12 degrees.

Tomorrow would seem to be the best pick for the weekend.

'Golden Week' is fast approaching.

So what exactly is Golden Week? For those of you who don't know, Golden Week is a number of national holidays that happen close to each other giving lots of people a nice holiday in late April and early May. Most tourist spots get very busy as a result!

Depending on what days they fall, some years it is a considerably long period. This year, the actual national holidays are 'Showa Day' on Friday 29th April, 'Constitution Day' on Tuesday 3rd May, 'Greenery Day' on Wednesday 4th May and 'Children's Day' on Thursday May 5th. This means that this year Golden Week looks like this:

* Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend)
* Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week)
* Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend)

No doubt some folk will be taking Monday 2nd May and Friday 6th May as a holiday as well giving them a 10 day break. Nice.

Thursday 5th May is scheduled to be the last day of the snow season here in Niseko.

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 23rd April 2016, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Blue skies, a bit of cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
We did get to see some blue skies and sun yesterday afternoon once all that cloud and fog cleared up, though it did take until getting on for mid-afternoon.

This morning it's clearer from the start of the day. Lots of blue sky, just a bit of cloud and calm. Lovely.

The 4 resorts that remain open continue to battle on and at least it's good weather for a late season ride. Tomorrow should be clear and sunny as well and we're expecting temperatures getting on for around 20 degrees on both days.

Upcoming Golden Week holidays:

* Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend)
* Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week)
* Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend)

Grandeco Now!

Saturday 23rd April 2016, 8:50am
Weather conditions: Fair blue skies
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 50cm
Good morning from Grandeco.

Clear blue skies again this morning - some trees are becoming green, but there's still some white snow on the ground.

Not much now though... Grandeco is still keeping one course with 1km length open and the gondola and No.2 lift operating, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep the courses open. They are trying hard to move in snow from other areas to keep it open.

Due to the snow situation the resort has decided to close during the period 25th-28th April and then re-open on 29th April for the Golden Week holidays. The days closed will help them keep that course open for the important holiday period.

So basically the open days from now will be today, tomorrow, 29th April, 30th April and 1st-5th May. If there are enough snow, they will even try to extend until 8th May.

Gambatte-imasu ne!

A 1 day lift ticket (adult) will be 3600 yen during this period.

---

Lifts operating:

Gondola
Number 2 quad

Courses that remain open:

[A-a] Rainbow 3500 (approx. 1km in length)

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 23rd April 2016, 8:51am
Weather conditions: Mostly clear blue skies
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Good morning from Yuzawa.

The sun is out and there is lots of blue sky this morning. Just a bit of cloud here and there and already a warm 18C degrees here in town. More fine weather is forecast for tomorrow so weather wise we are all good for the weekend it would seem.

The big news today is that the GALA Yuzawa resort have made the decision that tomorrow - Sunday 24th April - is going to be their last day of the season. They will be open today and tomorrow with the Melody course (on snow mats) and a small sledge area remaining open. It almost seems inevitable with the snow situation that they have been faced with.

That also means that from Monday morning it will be just Kagura that remains open. Their plan has always been to remain open until 29th May and they still have that on their official information, but with that over a full month away I think that there must be a fairly good chance that they also will be cutting that short.

We shall see...

Have a good weekend.

Upcoming Golden Week holidays:

* Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend)
* Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week)

GALA Yuzawa
GALA Yuzawa resort have announced that they will remain open until tomorrow, Sunday 24th April.
The Melody course - with artificial 'snow mats' - and sledging area are open.
Note that skiing and snowboarding on natural snow is now no longer possible at GALA.

Kagura
The Tashiro Ropeway plans to be open until 8th May.
The Kagura area via Mitsumata Ropeway plans to be open until 29th May.
The Mitsumata area is now used as a 'connecting course' to get to and from the main Kagura area with some snow remaining, under which is the artificial 'snow brush'.
Most of the main Kagura courses remain open with natural snow.
Note that the top Kagura Number 5 pair lift will be open through Sunday 24th April.
Official snow depth:
Kagura area: 160cm
Tashiro area: 130cm
Mitsumata area: -cm
