Welcome to our new Geto Kogen Now daily reports section

Geto Kogen is a ski and snowboard resort in Iwate Prefecture in the northern Tohoku region of Honshu, the main island of Japan. It’s known for heavy snowfalls, quality snow and tree run courses. Hopefully we will be able to bring you some good snowy reports through this season.

For more information on Geto Kogen please check out these pages on SnowJapan:

As with all our daily ‘Now’ reports, the bottom line is that they are independent and honest – they are published by us, not by the resort. The new snowfall number is being measured at the base area of the resort.

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 22nd December 2017, 7:48am
Weather conditions: Fine and sunny. Lovely.
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Yuzawa.

A fine day yesterday with temperatures rising to around 6C at town level in the afternoon. Today is going to be similarly mild - if not a little warmer still - and we are starting the day with mostly clear and blue skies; just a bit of cloud around. It's forecast to be sunny through the day... and tomorrow too.

So it should be a good day weather wise for the first day of the season for the Iwappara and NASPA Ski Garden resorts. They both start their seasons today and NASPA is off to a flying start with all of their courses and lifts open.

Definitely really good days to be out on the mountain.

Snow cover on the slopes is very good - even lower down - but it's not particularly deep yet and with the fine and mild daytime conditions we are experiencing at the moment, we could definitely be doing with more to really kick things into high gear.

It is still looking likely that the next snowfall will be with us from Monday. It may well start off with some rain at lower elevations, but turning into snow and carrying on into the week.

Come on Santa!

Naeba Now!

Friday 22nd December 2017, 8:19am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good Morning from a very sunny Naeba!

Despite it being a fresh start to the day due to the clear skies last night, the sun is shining so expect things to warm up quickly this morning. The pistes will likely be crisp first thing, softening up a little into lunch time providing the perfect conditions for a fun ride today.

The forecast moving forwards is for this period of high pressure to continue through until Saturday evening, when it will give way to an area of low pressure bringing cloud and heavy snow. Sunday is forecast to be exceptionally warm currently, but once the storm has settled in they are expected to drop back well below 0°C.

A superb day to catch some winter sun and lay down some nice turns.

Cracking!

Hakuba Now!

Friday 22nd December 2017, 8:32am
Weather conditions: Blue skies, some cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Hakuba.

There was quite a lot of cloud around during the morning yesterday but by mid afternoon there was less cloud and more blue sky with the sun shining through in places. Dramatic!

Less cloud and more blue sky and sun over Hakuba this morning.

It seems most of northern Nagano is going to be enjoying lots of sunshine through today and tomorrow. Cold nights but warming up somewhat during the daytime in the village.

With good snow cover on the mountain and a lot of terrain open, definitely very nice days to be out there.

But, of course, inevitably, we want more snow. It's there on the forecast still from Sunday night into the new week. It is looking like it will should be a snowy Christmas day.

Niseko Now!

Friday 22nd December 2017, 8:32am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: 11cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning friends.

This morning I measured 11cm of fresh snowfall to add to the report as the snow keeps on piling up.

Well, actually, not at the moment as it has eased off leaving us with generally cloudy skies at the moment. It is going to be slightly less cold today as well and over the next few days temperatures may well venture into low positive numbers during the daytime. It remains to be seen if we will get to see much sunshine.

So it seems we are going to have a little breather from the relentless snowfall.

I'm not exactly sure why but as we approach 8:30am it would seem that the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold. Hopefully that should be a temporary early morning thingie.

Not to fear. Colder temps and snow should be back by Monday.

Remember, Santa-san should be here in Niseko over the weekend. Obviously, his chosen destination. (Note: there might even be some dudes dressing up and pretending to be Santa-san around town; don't be fooled by them!)

As per the Avalanche Report below it seems that decisions are yet to be made regarding gates. There's lots of talk about them opening tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see. I will of course bring you any news when I have it.

I hope you have a fun day wherever you are.

---

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 4am: -1℃, light snowfall, calm. Moiwa800m: -4.9℃, W5.5m/s, developing snowdrifts and cornices, light snowfall, good visibility. Annupuri/Hirafu data n/a. Coastal data: NNW10m/s, WSW8m/s, 1021hPa, 1.3m waves.

The wind is calming down as the atmospheric pressure gradient is flattening. The snowdrifts are stabilizing, however a weak layer of yesterday’s hail is present at around 40cm depth.

Leeward cornice/knoll slopes above 800m are starting to stabilize, however precaution is still required. 150cm thick slab avalanche hazard continues in strictly off limits Haru no Taki area. South facing slopes are the most affected by the sun and thin wet snow slabs that can be the trigger of a large slide are more likely to form. Potential trigger layer is Dec 14th’s low pressure system snowfall.

Many of the avalanche accidents occur during and just after storms and heavy snowfall. Looking at the snowfall transition of the last few days, if a slide occurs in the Backbowl’s higher slopes, it would be a very large avalanche that would run a very long distance at a great speed. Do not underestimate the hazard of avalanches. Once the wind calms down and snowfall stops, the snowpack will eventually stabilize. Just a little more patience, please. The snow in the trees is dense and in great shape.

Peak lifts operation is undecided as hazard of cornice collapse off the peak is present. Once safety is confirmed, the lifts will start running. Peak gates opening will be delayed. Have a nice day.

Another nice day up here with mild temperatures and light winds.

We’re expecting more clouds to roll in later this afternoon and the winds to pick up slightly. On the snowfall front don’t expect too much in the next day or so. Maybe another 1-2 cm today and a few more tomorrow and into Sunday. Xmas day is still forecasting gale force winds with light to moderate snowfall….that should be fun!

The runs are still in limited action and you can expect a little ice on top until the sun hits it then a great afternoon.

Have a great Friday.

Myoko Now!

Friday 22nd December 2017, 11:27am
Weather conditions: Mostly sunny with scattered clouds
New snowfall: 0cm

A little delay agin this morning - but, hey, it was to be Santa for the local preschool. I’m sure there are no Scrooges out there among the SnowJapan readership….

A nice, sunny day today, and it’s likely to stay sunny and increasingly warm over the net two days or so as the freezing level heads up the hill. Says it could hit 1900 meters which means Sunday could be pretty balmy (time to break out the aloha shirts already?).

Then the line goes down, and we’re back to snow for Christmas Day and beyond. It’s a great start any which way, and if we can avoid rain it will all be OK. Kind of interested to see what will happen at the new Lotte Arai, as it is quite a bit lower than the Mt. Myoko and surrounding resorts, and they are reporting higher temperatures even now.
