Minakami Now!

Monday 22nd December 2008, 8:25am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a warm Autumn day with mid day temperatures around 15deg C! A small amount of rain fell in the late evening at the valley level, with sleet and snow falling in the upper mountains.

Today the temperature has dropped closer to standard late December averages, with a current reading of 5 deg C. There is light rain forecast from this afternoon at the valley level which is expected to turn into snow from the early evening.

The cool temperatures are expected to continue through to tomorrow with more snow expected tomorrow evening. This is great news for the lower lying ski areas who will finally be able to effectively snow make.

All of the remaining ski areas in Minakami are scheduled to open this coming weekend, and with more snow forecast for Friday this may eventuate, with the exception of Oana ski area which will be lucky to open before the new year.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Monday 22nd December 2008, 8:57am
Weather conditions: Low cloud with light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday afternoon was T-shirt weather - so I drove up the mountain opposite the Naeba hill, parked the car and took a walk in the wilderness, half expecting to see the Mikuni black bears lying on their sun loungers reading 'Mills & Boon' or some other holiday reading pulp - waiting to retire into hibernation for the next few months.

But no, I was greeted with frozen puddles of water and a chilly breeze along with low foreboding clouds moving in from the West, and not a single animal or critter in sight - pretty encouraging stuff when your waiting for the snow to come.

However, it was only disappointment this morning as it rained last night, and the temperature didn't even have the decency to go sub zero on us. So this morning we awoke to a pretty gloomy environment what with half the main hill shrouded in cloud and things looking a little bit too 'earthy' for my liking.

Bring on the Christmas snow!

Weather conditions: Rainy

The rain started last night, belting it down with some conviction at times, and this morning it is still wet and windy. Unfortunately it is even raining up at Kagura with a temperature of +1 up there while it is about 5 down in town.

Yesterday was another almost autumn like day with warm temperatures and a distint non-wintery feel to it. Sad to see all those greens and browns rather than the white that we so want to see.

The good news is that the snow is on it's way - some today perhaps, some tomorrow and then a fair bit due on Thursday night.

Come on Santa, do us a favour!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 22nd December 2008, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday really was a very mild day - more like November than mid/late December. Later on in the day it started raining even up here in Shiga Kogen but the better news is that it turned into snow and it is currently snowing. Not the huge dump kind of snow but snowing all the same and a few cm at the moment since last night after the rain.

Its looking like this week we will see some decent snowfall - perhaps not today or tomorrow even though we do have snow on the forecast but come Thursday that is the point where things might really kick off. We'll keep you up to date on that.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 22nd December 2008, 9:38am
Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Very light snow fell all yesterday and last night. In fact last night is was like a fine mist rather than the light and fluffy star shaped flakes we normally get. It came down at the impressive rate of something like a mm per hour! So basically there has been no increase in overall depth. The heaviest snowfalls moved through a little to the south and east of our region. This morning light snowfalls are continuing.
Conditions on the lower mountain are still not great with only a little snow covering the ice base. Up high though there is still some good snow to be found although it's pretty tracked out. It's cold out there and we're now just waiting for some big falls and at this stage it's looking pretty good on xmas and boxing day for these to come through. Snow-forecast is tipping some rain at village level on Wednesday but although it is likely to warm a little with winds turning more southerly I don't think we'll see rain.

Weather conditions: slight cold breeze with an overcast sky
New snowfall: --

It's a very overcast day here in the Alps. The visibility of the alps is very low from ground level. We have a light cold gust with a temperature of 3 at the bottom. The forecast is predicted for a light snow the next couple of days.

The mountains are still running with limited lift operations but since the weekend rush is over, the lifts and runs may be a little less congested.

Myoko Now!

Monday 22nd December 2008, 10:48am
Weather conditions: cloudy with snow in the pm
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Temperatures are dropping hard and fast on Myoko. The fogs of the morning have turned into some weird ghostly frost. Wind speeds haven't changed much, but the front is moving in a day before forecasted. Snows expected from the afternoon with heavy falls overnight and through till the New Year! Great! Really great.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: High cloud cover. Cold and snowing today.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It snowed just over 2 cm yesterday and overnight. Nothing to get excited about, except when considering recent alternatives.

So in summary, it's cold (i.e. no melting). Yeah.
It's snowing (i.e. no r@!n). Yeah.
Snow is forecast for next SIX days. This is a good thing. Now we've just got to see how much.

Very high cloud cover right now, with excellent visibility. I promised my kids we'd have a White Christmas, and it looks 100% guaranteed.

The Snow Dome in front of Bell Hills Hotel is finished. There was an inaugural yaki niku party to open it up.

Monday 22nd December 2008, 11:46am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Heavy rain fell in the village throughout last night and it is still falling lightly now. On the mountain, however, it has been falling as snow, with 5cm reported on Yamabiko (although it's still falling quite heavily now and looks like it could be a bit more). It is currently -2 degrees up the top and 4 degrees in the village.

The base is still reported as being 50cm on Yamabiko and 40cm on Uenodaira, but this snow should give that a boost. Already the skyline access pair lift is open, and the Bunabayashi and Yunomine courses are now open as well.

Great snow today for those ready to brave the conditions - enjoy!

Lifts open:
Nagasaka Gondola
Hikage Gondola
Yamabiko Quad
Yamabiko Quad #2

Uenodaira Quad
Yu Road (moving walk)
