Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 22nd December 2005, 8:36am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The forecasts last night were warning of heavy snow - but we wake to just a cloudy morning early on. It looks like the snow may well be moving in on Yuzawa though, so expect it to be falling by the time we next update this page.

Both GALA and Kagura are reporting fairly strong winds higher up. At the moment only the Mitsumata area of Kagura is open and GALA may well be closing some lifts during the day depending on conditions up there.

Both the quads at Iwappara are now moving. Yuzawa Park is also now part open, as is Yuzawa Nakazato (both with 3 lifts operating).

So, time for another update on the remaining resorts to open:

23rd December (Fri) - Naeba Asagai;
23rd December (Fri) - Kayama Captain Coast;
23rd December (Fri) - Ludens Yuzawa;
23rd December (Fri) - NASPA Ski Garden;
23rd December (Fri) - Ipponsugi

So it looks like by this time tomorrow morning all of the resorts in Yuzawa should be at least part open!

11am update:

Heavy snow is now falling at town level and the really strong winds have arrived. Around 15cm of snow in the last hour on tops of cars, it is really coming down with some force and very poor visibility. Not the best of days to be out on the slopes - if they're open that is, best to check with the resorts for the latest!

6pm update:

Very nasty conditions outside today - heavy snow and very strong winds.

This did not really affect Yuzawa, but it seems that as many as 650,000 households in Niigata-ken were affected by electricity blackouts today - and still around 220,000 without electricity as this is being written. Here in central Yuzawa we only saw lights flickering and the electric go off for a matter of seconds quite a few times this morning, although a friend in the Kandatsu area said they were without electric for about an hour early afternoon.

It seems that the Shinkansen trains were affected but from 4pm they are now operating as normal - which is more than can be said for other areas of the prefecture. Apparently at one point 1160 sets of traffic lights were not working, causing a fair few problems.

The heavy snow (and winds) are forecast to continue into tomorrow - with up to another 80cm of snow possible before noon tomorrow!

Time for an onsen.    Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 22nd December 2005, 9:04am
Weather conditions: Cloud > snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well the snow hasn't really turned up yet though it does seem to be trying.... but cloudy is the best description of the weather early on this morning. Snow is forecast for today and tomorrow though and so it should be expected. More runs are gradually opening up and it will surely not be long now before the area is fully open - hopefully in time for this coming Christmas weekend which should see many more people arrive and be the busiest weekend of the season so far.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 22nd December 2005, 10:21am
Weather conditions: Scattered cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another fine and clear start to the day. A great day to get some photos of Mt Yotei and the surrounds. The groomers will be hard and fast again and finding fresh tracks off piste is becoming a little more challenging. Snow is forecast to return to the region tomorrow. The resort still has relatively few people in it and the slopes are uncrowded. This should change from xmas day onwards with masses of people coming into the region.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 22nd December 2005, 11:04am
Weather conditions: Snowing and overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well, Hakuba woke up to about 20~30 cm of new snow in the valley again, but not without some sacrifice as the winds came with it. Yes, the winds are raking havoc on the resorts today and keeping all areas running minimum lift operation.

Unfortunately, Gondolas and upper lifts for Happo, Goryu/47 and Tsugaike are all closed at the moment and waiting for a break in the weather. At the moment, strong blizzard type conditions are blowing all the new snow off the peaks and obscuring visibility.

Temperatures are -10 deg. at the top and -4~5 deg. in the valley.

We'll try to have a Crack 'O' Nooners report for you to give some updates. In the meantime, ski/ board the bottom lifts and keep your ears open for upper lift operation.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 22nd December 2005, 11:51am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a fine, sunny and calm day with no new snow to report - great day to be out on the slopes.

Today started off with a steady breeze and lots of snow falling and low-fair visibility. It looks like the snow is set to continue with stronger winds on their way as well.   Read more ...
