Sunday 22nd April 2012, 9:11am
Strong winds started blowing around later on in the day yesterday and have continued overnight and into this morning. So strong actually that this morning Gala Yuzawa and all of Kagura is closed... leaving us with just a small part of Naeba (the lower No5 quad and No4 pairs) and part of Kandatsu Kogen open for the day today. There'll be more than a few disappointed people out this early this morning.
It's cloudy and clear in some places up there this morning but rain is still forecast for later on today and tomorrow as well with clearer conditions returning from Tuesday.

I'm not sure we were really expecting this. Very strong winds since last night and unfortunately Kagura is completely closed this morning because of them. Only a small part of Naeba open as well with the No 5 quad and No 4 pair lifts operating early on.
Rain later and tomorrow with conditions improving again Tuesday.
We will update this Naeba Now report before each weekend right through until the season at Kagura, and in the meantime we will be keeping the Yuzawa Now! reports going on a daily basis right through until the last ski lift stops moving.
Resort Operations, 21st April (subject to change) Naeba: Naeba re-opens on April 21st/22nd and then for Golden Week (April 28th - May 6th) Kagura: Open as normal. Official snow depths Naeba: 160cm Kagura: 320cm Read more ...

Change of plan for the day!
Strong winds are affecting operations this morning and the Gondola isn't moving. What is moving is the following lifts:
Nagasaka Four Nagasaka Triple Higake Triple Higake No2 lift B line
So it's just a central lower area of the resort that is open this morning which is a shame as a fair few people are here for the weekend.
Strong winds and warm temperatures for now, likely to followed on by rain later today and for tomorrow as well. If you want to see the sun, Tuesday onwards is the time to come.
Current Official Snow Depths Numbers:
* Readings by the resort from lower slopes now seem to have finished - though there's still generally plenty.
Normal spring lift operations (scheduled) NOT TODAY DUE TO WIND: Nagasaka Gondola Yamabiko Four Yamabiko Four No2 Skyline Link Uenotaira Four (open 21st/22nd and then 28th April until 6th May) Paradise Four (open 21st/22nd and then 28th April until 6th May)
Normal courses open (scheduled) NOT TODAY DUE TO WIND: Yamabiko A Yamabiko C Yamabiko D Yamabiko E Skyline (upper half) - go to base via Kamoshika and Karasawa Uenotaira Paradise Schneider Utopia courses Yunomine A, B Challenge Bunabayashi Rinkan
The Uenotaira Snow Park plans to be open 21st and 22nd April and then from 28th April until 6th May
Strong winds is the main thing to report this morning and it's messing about with timetables as well with a restriction on lift operations. Some areas and lifts that were scheduled to be open today are not open due to the winds unfortunately.
Areas with some lifts operating at 9am on Sunday (some affected by strong winds, may change during the day): Mammoth Ichinose Family Yakebitaiyama Kumanoyu
So at the time of writing we just have 7 lifts operation over those areas and so it's all rather limited. It will probably be raining later on as well, though I suppose today is as good a day as any with the wind doing it's thing as well. It does look like the rain might be with us through into tomorrow morning as well though but hopefully will quickly clear up. The winds should have calmed down as well by then.

Sunday 22nd April 2012, 9:38am
This morning we have some more nice blue skies over Niseko. The difference today though is that there are some pretty strong winds blowing around on the mountain and it's affecting lifts.
Winds are affecting the lifts at Grand Hirafu with the Gondola, King 3 and King 4 lifts on hold and the Holiday No1 lift operating instead (as well as the planned Ace No2 lift).
Lifts over at Annupuri seem to be operating as normal this morning.
Still looks like we will be seeing rain later on today or overnight and also tomorrow as well. As I have said in a recent report around Wednesday we can expect temperatures to really rise and things start to get properly warm.
Current lift operations (22nd April 2012 @ 9am):
Grand Hirafu: Ace Quad Lift No2 King Hooded Triple Lift #3 [ON HOLD DUE TO WIND] King Lift #4 [ON HOLD DUE TO WIND] The Hirafu Gondola will operate on 21st, 22nd, 28th, 29th, 30th April, and also from 3rd May until 6th May. [ON HOLD DUE TO WIND]
Grand Hirafu and Annupuri both plan to be open until 6th May. The Hanazono and Niseko Village areas are now closed. Niseko Village plans to re-open for the Golden Week holiday period from Sunday 29th April until Sunday 6th May.
Bit grim up high today. Spotting with rain, low cloud making visibility a bit of a challenge and a strong breeze gusting. The official snow base measurement has dropped below 3 meters for the first time in months as the warm temperatures persist. The melt will continue this week as there is rain forecast for later today and for tomorrow. It is then due to get really warm on Wednesday with some heavy rain predicted for the end of the week. After the clearer conditions of yesterday it's all change again here today. Over the village it's just cloudy but the upper slopes are completely covered in cloud and taking a look at the webcams from up there it looks like visibility is extremely poor up there. Need to be careful!
It is about 9C at the moment and just cloudy but rain is expected fairly soon which might continue tomorrow. We might get stronger winds as well this afternoon.
Tuesday and Wednesday should see a return of the sun and those warm temperatures I have mentioned.

I thought I would post a quick report this morning. After the fine day we had yesterday, this morning it is more cloudy and at the same time much more windy and that is affecting some of the lifts at Zao - the upper Gondola is not operating along with the Utopia No2 lift and Kurohime quad. Other planned lifts for the day might be affected, it's just going to depend on Mother Nature now.
There might be some rain added into the mix before tomorrow as well but the week ahead looks set to be generally clear and warm.
The last few days I have noticed some patches of ground showing on parts of the lower slopes of the resort - first time I have really noticed that.

It's only 10am, and we're already seeing temperatures upwards of 16 degrees! It's going to be a warm one out today for sure. All this warmth ahead of a front that will push it's way through the area tomorrow, bringing with it some light rain and cooler temperatures. You'd think with this string of spring-like days the snowpack would be taking a hit, but after all that snow we had this season, the slopes are still holding up just fine.
For now, the winds are picking up a bit, but the weather is absolutely beautiful today! You probably owe it to yourself to get out there and enjoy one more day before the Golden Week rush! Read more ...
