Clear blue skies
Open kettei! Yes, the decision has been made and Kagura is going to open from tomorrow morning. Hurray!
Here's the lowdown:
The Mitsumtata Ropeway will be open from 8am tomorrow morning. From the top of the Gondola a shuttle bus will take folk over to the base of the Kagura Gondola, and that Gondola will take you up to the main Kagura area where the Kagura Number 1 quad will be operating every day and the Kagura Number 1 Romance lift will be moving on Saturdays and holidays. So that's the lift situation. What about the courses?
They plan to have the main Kagura run open - 1500m of it which - will 20-50m in width. And they are noting 60cm in snow depth.
So a fairly decent start and with the natural snow up there and the 'snow' that the machines have been making it looks like decent cover up there.
Remember there's some tonjiru and osjiruko soup on offer down at Mitsumata Ropeway from 1pm-4pm as well, though they are talking about limited supply so you have to decide what you want. Skiing and snowboarding or soup? ;) Perhaps both if you come back down before 4pm and there's still some left.
The Ropeway plans to be open until 5pm, with the last 'going up' at 2:30pm.
So that's the situation at Kagura.
There won't be any new real snow up there as this morning the sun it out and it's a beautiful start to the morning. Clear skies all round, a bit of low lying early morning fog in places. Lovely. It's going to be a Yuzawatastically fine and sunny day by the looks of things, and warming up too with a high temperature of maybe 12-13 degreees forecast. Similarly warm and maybe similarly sunny tomorrow as well for that first day at Kagura.
Here are the planned opening dates for ski resorts in Yuzawa Town:
Tomorrow: Kagura (Mitsumata)
Saturday 6th December: Kagura Tashiro Iwappara
Saturday 13th December: Naeba
Friday 19th December: Yuzawa Nakazato Yuzawa Kogen Yuzawa Park
Sorry for the late report today - waiting for news on whether the lifts will be moving tomorrow or not.
The warmer weather and lack of further snowfall that we have been reporting in recent days has meant that things aren't going as everyone had hoped.
OK, so here is the official news after probably lots of umming and ahhing and sucking of air. The decisions have been made - no opening tomorrow.
Niseko Grand Hirafu: Hirafu have delayed opening and have said that they are now 'aiming for a new opening date of 29th November', so a week later.
Niseko Annpuri: Annupuri have also delayed their opening and will now just open when there's enough snow to do so without giving any date.
So we need to just sit back and wait for more snow.
It's always great to get off to a perfect 'on-time' start, and disappointing to not be able to, but in the big picture it's nothing to worry about. Though of course we want snow to fall. Now! And lots of it.
Alas, perhaps Grand Hirafu do know something with that mention of a week delay as a look at the forecast doesn't bring too much hope through into next week with more sun and relatively mild conditions than we would like and not much sign of snow.
Must be patient. Must be patient!
Niseko Village and Hanazono are of course not planning on being open just yet, their original planned dates noted below.
Planned opening dates for the different resort areas on the mountain:
Niseko Grand Hirafu - looking to 29th November for opening Niseko Annupuri Kokusai - will open as soon as possible Niseko Village - Monday 1st December Niseko Hanazono - Saturday 6th December Read more ...

Clear and sunny
Hello from Hakuba. It's another beauty of a day.
Sunny, not so cold, lovely views.
Those things would have been nice a few weeks ago, but we want snow right now. Sadly we're not getting it as autumn-like conditions linger. Similar conditions are forecast tomorrow and perhaps Sunday as well.
It should start to get colder again around Tuesday, bringing with it rain which hopefully by around mid week will be snow.
Anyway, I will update you again early in the week with the latest.
For the record, here's the 'official' dates out there:
Hakuba 47 - late November Hakuba Goryu - late November Happo-one - late November Tsugaike Kogen - late November Kashimayari Sports Village - early December Hakuba Sanosaka - mid December Hakuba Norikura Onsen - mid December Hakuba Cortina - Saturday 13th December Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field - Friday 19th December Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Friday 21st November 2014, 15:06pm
A beautiful day here in Nozawa Onsen. The sun is out, there are blue skies all around... and it's all a bit too warm for my liking! Double digit number warm, and according to the local forecast we have a few more of them over the weekend. So time to enjoy the remains of autumn really this weekend.
Nozawa of course hopes to open a week tomorrow. Will they be able to? Well, the forecast is currently looking like starting to get colder once again around mid week with lots of rain around Tuesday and Wednesday with the freezing point remaining over 2000m.
Let's revisit that next week and see how things have changed. In the meantime have a great weekend.
Nozawa Onsen plans to open for the season on Saturday 29th November. Read more ...
