Well, well, well... what's this we have here then!?
I do believe it's fresh snow! Kagura reporting up to 10cm of fresh snow, with maybe 5cm or so here in Naeba. Much colder too, of course.
Windy too, and the Tashiro area of Kagura is closed - so all head for the Mitsumata Ropeway this morning. Early on it will be open from the Ropeway up to Kagura Number 1 romance lift, obviously subject to change depending on the conditions at the time.
The snow is supposed to ease off this morning though leaving us with a cloudy day.
After this short blast of winter, tomorrow should be back to mild and sunny.

Yesterday evening was nice and clear until later on when it started to rain heavily. But the brilliant news this morning is that it is snowing and there's over 5cm of fresh snow in Yuzawa and up to 10cm on the slopes. It's still snowing - and actually coming down quite nicely at the moment - so while it's forecast to not last long, we can just hope for as much as possible before then!
Great to see snow falling again though and the accompanying colder temperatures.
So yes the forecast says this afternoon it'll just be cloudy, but it will stay fairly cold all day. Right now it's around 0 degrees.
Forecast for tomorrow is clear and sunny conditions and temps to rise up back to around 10 degrees in the daytime, so let's enjoy this return of winter while it lasts!
Oh yes, strong winds are preventing the Tashiro part of Kagura from opening today. So limited operations at Kagura. Other resorts seem unaffected and open as normal.
Official resort snow depths @ Thursday 21st March 2013, AM:
Good morning from Niseko and I have good news. Yes, a nice new delivery of snow to report. About 15cm outside where I am but strong winds mean that it's one of those days when you'll get different numbers with every person you ask - some places less, some places more. I can imagine though that this morning there'll be some very nice spots to find on the mountain though.
Nice and cold too.
Unfortunately those same winds mean that it's not fully open this morning. Actually, the Annupuri area is completely closed (as of their latest update). Niseko Village has the lower lifts running - Banzai, Morino and Community - and they have been reporting wind speeds of up to 26m/s. At Grand Hirafu the lifts operating as of 9am were the Ace Family, Ace Number 1, King Number 1, Holiday Number 1 and the Hirafu Gondola. Hanazono only has the lower lift operating at reduced speed at the moment. It seems unlikely that the wind situation will improve much during the day today, we can only hope.
So fairly blizzard-like conditions out there this morning and a return to mid-winter with generally poor visibility out on the slopes.
Official Resort Snow Depths
Grand Hirafu & Niseko Hanazono Top - 495cm Bottom - 230cm
Niseko Annupuri Top - 400cm Bottom - 250cm
Niseko Village Top - 450cm Bottom - 210cm
Niseko base 6am: -7C, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development, blizzard. Annupuri peak: -16.1C. Coastal data: wind WNW20m/s, 2.1m waves, pressure 1000hPa. Snow depth at 1000m: up from 390cm.
Blizzard conditions due to a strong winter weather pattern, new snowdrift growth on top of 20th Mar layer resulting in HIGH avalanche risk. From snowfall data, on SE facing slopes and knolls above 800m there is risk of 50cm surface slab avalanches. The wind is expected to drop after lunch and snowdrifts will begin to stabilse, in the morning, however, do not ride steep or leeward slopes.
Peak gates will be closed today. Hirafu Center 4 lift is expect to operate. Do not enter strictly off limits area Haru no Taki looking for fresh snow. Other gates openings are yet to be decided. Please respect Patrols decisions. All lifts at Moiwa are expected to be closed.
Please be careful driving and getting stuck on backroads today. If you get stuck, turn your engine off and wait. The wind and snow can block the exhaust from exiting the vehicle and you can become asphyxiated by exhaust fumes. In the car, even in negative temperatures, you wont immediately freeze to death. The storm will finish soon. Read more ...

Fresh snow! Yes, a few cm of fresh snowfall here in Hakuba this morning and resorts around the valley reporting up to 10cm of new snow on upper slopes (see below). Hurray!
All a big chance from yesterday when we saw the mercury rise again and it got up to around 17 degrees as well. Very warm. March temperature records are being broken in many areas of Japan it seems this year.
So it's sweet to have them drop right back down again. Overnight it got as cold as -3 at village level and right now at 9am it is -2C here and around -7C up on the Usagidaira (1400m) area of Happo-one.
The snow is very likely going to ease off this morning completely and leave us with a fine and perhaps sunny day. Actually even now I can see more and more blue sky behind the departing clouds. Feels like it is going to clear up. It won't be getting as warm as it has been though and keep fairly cold (hopefully).
Fairly strong winds this morning as well on mountain but resorts seems relatively unaffected.
After this quick return to wintery conditions, tomorrow will probably be clear and sunny - and start warming up again.
It seems that the Japan Paralympics starting today until Sunday 24th March at Kokusai 3 and Kokusai 1 lifts. Gambatte! In other Happo news, last night was the last night of 'nighta' on the Nakiyama slopes.
Official snow depths and operations @ Thursday 21st March 2013 AM:
Hakuba Goryu: 3cm of new snowfall on upper slopes, 1 cm on lower slopes reported by Hakuba Goryu Official snow depths: Alps daira - 240cm; Toomi - 90cm; Iimori - 70cm
Hakuba 47: Up to 10cm of new snowfall reported by Hakuba 47 since yesterday. Official snow depth: Upper - 165cm Lower - 75cm
Well this morning it's a return to winter like conditions in Zao with colder temperatures across the mountain. Some strong winds up top preventing the top Ropeway from operating this morning.
Down in the village it is -4 degrees and we have 1cm or so of fresh snow to report at base and surely more on the slopes. It's a cold winter-like -12 degrees at the top area of the resort.
Tomorrow we are due more sun and warmer conditions once again.

All the Ropeways Chuo Number 1 Pair AB (every day) Chuo Number 2 Pair AB (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April and 27th April until 6th May) Katakai Triple (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April, 27th-29th April, 3rd-6th May) Paradise Pair AB (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April and 27th April until 6th May)
The Yokokura Number 1 Pair AB will remain open as long as there's enough snow.
The weather man has delivered and we have 15cm+ of new snow at base level. The not so good news is that there are strong winds whipping around base and these are on the forecast through until Saturday. Currently it is blizzard like on the mountain but those who make the effort will be rewarded with some very good snow conditions.
The Kitanomine Gondola is on hold at the moment due to the wind and other lift operations may be affected today as well. Read more ...
Shiga Kogen Now!
Thursday 21st March 2013, 9:42am
Clearing up, sunny
Fresh snowfall in Shiga Kogen overnight. Not a huge amount but enough to cover the roads - though it's quickly drying up now - so perhaps a few cm or so on the mountains maybe a bit more. But great to see a return to more winter like weather even if for a short time.
It was still snowing an hour or so ago here, but has quickly cleared up this morning and there's an increasing amount of blue sky now - the sun is out. It still feels crisp and chilly though, so hopefully it won't warm up too much today.
Tomorrow is forecast to be sunny and warmer.

Yesterday was spring. This morning, more like winter again.
Fresh snowfall! Resort says 15cm of fresh, I had to move 5-10cm off the car. Oh yes, I like the sound of that. At -5 degrees, it's a full 18 degrees difference since yesterday. Which is pretty wild when you think about it.
Anyway, it's still snowing but due to clear up perhaps even this morning and tomorrow will be back to sunny and warmer according to the forecasts.
Should be nice out there this morning, especially compared with recent conditions.
The last blast of winter? Very possibly.

Thursday 21st March 2013, 10:00am
The next weather cycle has in fact arrived, with blowing snow and temperatures back in the minus again.
It's not as blustery as earlier this morning (although we do have new cornices on the snowpack outside the house, and drifts alongside the car).
Lifts are running fine now (checked on the Akakan gondola; no warnings from Suginohara this morning). It's nice to have things a little cleaner and whiter - it would be great to get 30+cm and really enjoy some light snow, but I doubt that much will fall.
The local forecast is for the snow to taper off later in the day.
Started to rain yesterday late at night and slowly turned to snow. Around 10cm of fresh snow at Tenjindaira.
Perhaps strong winds are affecting some slopes. Unfortunately, Tenjindaira is closed. Other than that resorts do seem to be open though you might expect some lifts to be operating at reduced speed.
Some trails are now closed at Okutone and Norn due to lack of snow but the resorts remain open.
Forecast says sunny and milder days again from tomorrow. Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 21st March 2013, 10:45am
Great news this morning. We have had a delivery of fresh powder overnight with 10cm at Yamabiko, 13cm at Uenotaira as of 10am. Reports from the mountain suggest more than a few deeper light dry windblown stashes and some even 'knee deep', especially in the higher elevation gullies. Nice.
Just a few cm or so down at village level.
Light snowfalls are continued for most of the morning though easing off now. Not many people out there will ensure fresh tracks should be easily found all day long. The gondola line was maybe 15 people waiting at opening.
Yesterday the snow remained slushy but did not get too slow. Best areas were the top half of the mountain as well as the challenge area. We had cloud last most of the day however thankfully forecast rainfalls did not happen.
Looking ahead, cold conditions should last the rest of today with occasional snow showers passing through. Actually as this is being written the sun is peeking through the clouds, though it may well be temporary.
Tomorrow should be warmer than today and we expect the sun to make an appearance. Light snow showers are a possibility tomorrow night so we may have some more fresh snow to play in come Saturday morning. We are set for another cold spell Monday Tuesday next week with some snowfall expected.
