Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 1st April 2018
Sunday 21st March 2010, 7:13am
After the warm and clear weather of yesterday, this morning is a bit wet in town. No new snow to report at town level but Kagura are saying that there has been 1-2cm up at the top there, with snow falling at the higher elevations.
Around town, the mountain tops are visible, it's about 4 degrees at 7am, raining and cloud cover. The latest forecast for the day is cloud/rain > rain > sleet > snow as the day moves on so hopefully by this evening even lower down we might see some snow...
All resorts in the region are open as planned this morning.
An early report today, as it's a tour day. The snow reports are also from yesterday, but you get the idea of how the snowpack is going down.
Seriously strong winds blew throughout the night, with some lightning and thunder in the early hours of Sunday. Its not currently raining (as of 7 am), but the winds are shifting around to the north and it's starting to get colder. In short, everything is variable; visibility was OK earlier, but now the mountain is obscured; it's not raining, but snow looks likely. Tomorrow looks to be more pleasant; today, who knows?
Yesterday was a very spring like, warm, fine day in the region. There were people out there without jackets enjoying the fine weather.
Conditions have changed again this morning and it is a cloudy start to the day. There has been a slight snowfall overnight in higher regions and the top of Kagura are reporting 1-2cm of snow. Lower down it has been sleet-like or rain but we can expect to see some snow fall today and into tonight (more likely later on in the day). The lower slopes of Naeba are ok but visibility once you get higher up is limited this morning.
Right now it is +1 degree in the village and the Naeba and Kagura resorts seem to be planning to operate as normal today.
A scorcher yesterday with people in just T-shirts all over the mountain. Not so flash today though as we were woken by the sound of pretty heavy rain coming down early this morning. It's cleared up a bit now though the cloud is still hanging over us and looking quite ominous over the mountains. The forecast looks promising though with some light snow forecast from this afternoon into the evening.
The lower slopes took a bit of a battering with the rain this morning and a few dirt patches are visible in some areas. The snow up top is still in good condition though and a bit of a top up this afternoon would be very welcome.
Early on this morning it is a mild 4 degrees, cloudy but some strong winds blowing around. Apparently it will get colder and the strong winds will persist and we might be in for some snow today and perhaps into tomorrow. Nothing major, just light snow.
The windy conditions may well affect lift operations today, but unfortunately I need to post this report early this morning - so if you are planning on being in Zao today it is probably best to check the official website later on to check for the latest info on lift operations.
As the weekly forecast currently stands, looks for potentially some decent snowfall around Wednesday/Thursday as winter sticks with us!
T-shirts and sunscreen were seen across the resort yesterday as warm sunny conditions made for a really fun spring day. And whilst we love sunny spring days, the forecast heavy snow for next week makes us even happier.
Today should see high winds, rain and snow hit the resort with 15cm of fresh snow expected by tomorrow morning.
The forecast for the coming week shows heavy snow due to hit the resort on Wednesday and persist through until Friday morning. This should give us the chance to lay down some late season, uncrowded powder turns.
From one extreme to another. Poor mother nature seems to be having trouble deciding on a consistent weather pattern of late. Unlike yesterday, Hakuba is foggy, windy and cold. Overnight saw some of the strongest winds this season. Big rains came and went last night, for a while the storm was very intense, thunder lightning and strong winds. With the strong winds though, the snow coverage is showing the affects this morning.
With that rain in the early hours of this morning, the snow cover is on the damp side, but moderate snow has started to fall. Definitely expect to see some settlement and melting of the snowpack out there today.
Snow is forecast to fall throughout the day and the wind set to moderate and swing more north, cooling temperatures down.
Chairlifts are starting to turn with the moderating winds, so if you are keen to get some turns in check the online status and go for a ride. Just be careful of possible debris on the roads and runs and enjoy your day.
So... conditions on the resorts today will be soft and wet slushy snow, some crud and groomer and chopped powder (albeit kind of heavy powder). Tomorrow is supposed to be clearing with some sun. Still great coverage and good snow to be found on the hills out there so bundle up and enjoy the tail end of the winter!
Sorry for the late report today. We have seen yet another quick chance in conditions today. Yesterday saw that fine sunny and warm weather, followed by some nasty rain, but that changed into snow early on and today it has been back to being cold and more wintery. Importantly, it has been snowing today and it is still snowing here with at least a few cm of fresh snow and probably more on the mountains.
Actually the forecast is looking quite good at the moment with some snow due to fall up through until around Wednesday with the most on that day - it might even give us some decent cm. We shall see!
Nighta this evening planned at the following resort area: - Sun Valley - Ichinose Family - Yakebitaiyama - Kumanoyu
We have seen strong winds today and it has affected the operations at the resort with the Ropeway and other lifts not operating due to those conditions. It has been a relatively mild day as well with a high of around 5 degrees a little earlier on. Unfortunately we did see rain fall, though from the later half of the day it is snow and we should be seeing some fresh cms on the ground come tomorrow morning and light snow is possibly tomorrow as well along with colder temperatures. Things should clear up by around Wednesday. Read more ...
