Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Snowing Lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow continued throughout the last 24 hours maintaining the great conditions around the mountain. A low pressure system moving up the Pacific coast is even dumping snow in Tokyo this morning! This system is moving northwards and is likely to link up with the low over the Sea of Okhotsk which will maintain the north, north westerly airflow over Hokkaido for at least the coming week. This all means continuing snowfalls and cold temps and ongoing bottomless turns in the best powder on earth.

Weather conditions: Sun

A sunny start to the day!

After a cold night, the day has started cold but with the sun out here in Yuzawa - looks like it is going to be a great day to be out on the slopes.

(There's a definite chance that snow will arrive before the day is finished, but that may well be after the lifts have shut down for the day).   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 21st January 2006, 9:07am
Weather conditions: Clear skies, great carving weather.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow over night with the sky clearing up quite a bit this morning. Snow is predicted today but as it appears right now, it seems to be shaping up for a blue sky day. Yesterday was very quiet on the mountain with few people around, today may see a slight increase in numbers. Snow quality is very good with deep powder up at the top regions. It is very cold here, more than usual, probably due to the lack of cloud cover.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 21st January 2006, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Sunny and clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a beautiful Saturday morning here in Hakuba, with clear skies, great visibility and almost no wind. Tempretures are down but the sun is out, and things should warm up as the day continues. We're still waiting on the snow so until then, stay out of the trees and enjoy the sunshine!

Natural avalanches unlikely. Human triggered avalanches possible.
Use caution in steep terain especially around rocky outcrops, cornices and convexing rolls on unsupported slopes.
A crust covers most of the mountains right now but there are pockets of wind deposited snow in gullies and leaward slopes. Be careful of instability in this layer especially with increasing snow over the January 14th, rain crust. There is some faceting taking place beneath the rain crust as well that is also a concern. Do not be under the assumption that the crust means that the slopes are bomb proof. There is a possibility that avalanches may be set off in the areas described above especially when combined with solar radiation or intense wind loading. Be cautious out there.   Read more ...

Yesterday turned out to be a fairly fine day and today really is - the sun is out and we have blue skies and good conditions out, a great start to the weekend.

It's also a cold start to the day, but once you get the gear on and head out that should be forgotten.   Read more ...
