Niseko Now!

Wednesday 21st December 2005, 8:31am
Weather conditions: High cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The fine weather lasted most of yesterday with only a dusting of snow in the afternoon. Today has again dawned fine with some high cloud and the probability of snow later. The groomers will be fairly hard and fast today. Off piste conditions are a little variable depending on aspect. There is still some nice powder to be found and I even managed to find some fresh tracks last night (not telling where though!).

The new bridge linking Kutchan to Niseko opened yesterday meaning travel time between the two areas may be reduced. Quite a number of the local community turned out to walk across te bridge at the opening ceremony.    Read more ...

There has been just a sprinkling of new snowfall since yesterday evening and at the moment it is cloudy in the region - looks like it could even clear up later on in the day. It is not as cold either with temperatures even rising above zero early on with no wind.

It looks like more snow is expected from tomorrow and into the weekend though...   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 21st December 2005, 11:11am
Weather conditions: Sun, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A fine morning to report from Shiga Kogen, there was some cloud but it has been moving and and there's now a fair bit of blue sky. It looks like snow is set to move in again though from tomorrow, so we've got to enjoy the finer weather while we can as there seems to be less of it than usual this season so far. The forecast is for snow from tomorrow into next week.

It's not as cold as it has been today either, and conditions out on the slopes are generally very good (best so far this season perhaps?).   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 21st December 2005, 11:29am
Weather conditions: Overcast cloudy skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow again last night and we are getting some settlement in the snow pack as temperatures have warmed. The visibility is good, so fast groomers are the go today.

If you are going further afield in search of powder remember that the winds of 2 days ago have created wind slab in the open bowls. This means that the transference of shock from your movement is easy through the pack and may easily trigger an avalanche. This is especially true around ridges, rock outcrops and convex terrain. Watch out that you don't add more stress to the slope by adding mutiple members on to the same area or slope.

Always wear a beacon and carry a shovel, probe and other rescue necessities while outside the resorts. Don't forget to put your thinking cap on.
