Clear but the clouds will move in throughout the day. Snow forecast. Seems very likely.
So pretty this morning in Kitanomine Village
Furano received a dusting over night which gave us a very attractive 3mm more or less. Typically light and fluffy - Furano snow is consistently dry.
PHOTO 1 is of Furano resort Kitanomine Zone at about 7am today. PHOTO 2 is of my deck this morning, with a perfect dusting. The sparkles were very lovely.
The mercury read about -3C at about 6.45am, but by 7ish it was already nearing zero. Bluebird day looked promising but snow is forecast for tonight (and most of the rest of winter, I would imagine) so clouds will roll in later.
Japanese lesson: fuwa fuwa yuki means fluffy, fluffy snow. It's sort of baby speak, but it is completely appropriate at this time of year.
So in theory, Furano resort begins to open in about a week. That is not impossible if the forecast dumps really dump.
Not the nicest of weather conditions in the region the last few days, with drizzle falling today even though rain wasn't really featured on the forecasts.
Anyway, no snow yet but that isn't stopping Mitsumata opening tomorrow with it's 'snow mats'. The official stats say it's a 1100m long course with a width of 25-50m and including 30 'moguls' over 120m. A 1 day ticket will cost 3500 yen for adults and 2900 yen for children over 12 years old.
Looking ahead over the next week there isn't much sign of imminent snow I'm afraid - more a mix of sun, cloud and rain through the week.
Next update coming next week.
Planned opening dates for resorts in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City (by date):
