Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow stopped around mid morning yesterday but has returned again this morning with very light snow falling at present and no wind at all at the village level.

The snow conditions are back to what they were at the end of January with fresh powder at all of the upper mountain ski fields. Warmer temperatures are predicted from Thurday so get up this weekend to make the most of the snow!   Read more ...

Weather conditions: overcast turning to snow later.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We have had around 5cm of fresh snow at the base of the mountain in the last 24 hours and it is around -4. There is a light Northerly.

The forecast is giving an overcast morning followed by snow showers in the afternoon.

Yesterday there was some great snow up high but it was very windy at times so visibility was pretty poor. The mid section of the mountain was by far the best as further down it got too warm and was softening up.

Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The slopes might have got the 15cm that was forecast (10-20cm reported at Kagura), but here at town level it is more like 5-10cm of fresh snow overnight, and it is still snowing lightly at the moment with the temperature at -1 degrees and not likely to rise much above zero during the day. So the winter like conditios of the last week continue and there are really good conditions out on the ski slopes. How things have changed in the last 10 days or so!

Anyway it is looking likely that the snow clouds will clear up later on today, and we have cloud/sun forecast for tomorrow. After that the longer forecast shows a mix of cloud and possibly rain as the temperatures start to rise again.

Tuesday 20th March 2007, 9:08am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is more new snow to report this morning (about 10cm) - the roads are covered, traffic moves slowly and it continues to feel like early February rather than late March. Conditions on the slopes really are generally excellent at the moment and with low temperatures every day things are looking good at the moment.

After today it looks likely that things may well start to warm up again, but hopefully not by too much...   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 20th March 2007, 9:28am
Weather conditions: White Sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A little more snow on the ground today - about 5 to 10 cm of very light fluffy stuff, it's -4 around these parts, with no wind. Naeba is just about visible from Asagai.

Yesterdays conditions were fantastic, powder snow all over the mountain. Should be the same today as more lifts open up and let the people get up to the upper slopes... More snow on the way. Looking good for the weekend again and you can expect a lot of fun at Kagura today!   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 20th March 2007, 9:29am
Weather conditions: Sunshine.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snowfall in the last 24 hours in town but it didn't warm up too much through yesterday so the conditions on the mountain should be pretty good still. It's a clear, sunny day out there this morning so visibility will be perfect. There is no wind down in town.

It looks like it will cloud over this afternoon and we may get a few snow showers.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 20th March 2007, 9:44am
Weather conditions: Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
An awesome day on the slopes yesterday in Nozawa; Fresh light powder and patches of sunshine. Today should be much the same with light snow falling presently and most of last night. Winds once again are not much to speak of with the highest today around 20km/h. The base depths are currently 250cm at Yamabiko- the most this season- and 190cm at Uenotaira. With more snow expected over the next few days late season is fast becoming the best time of the year to be up here.

The outlook as stated is for light snow to continue falling at least until Thursday night. Winds may get as high as 35km/h on Thursday.

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 20th March 2007, 9:57am
Weather conditions: Cloudy (high cloud ceiling)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A high cloud ceiling today in Hakuba but with good visibility on this cold crisp morning. No new snow to report overnight however the recent dry cold weather has kept the snow consistent and dry on the upper slopes on the resorts in Hakuba. Strong gusty winds were observed yesterday on the higher lifts on Happo-One and some wind crust was felt underfoot making the skiing fast and one should have sharp edges. Today's forecast is calling for moderate winds from the NW and light snow is supposedly going to fall yet we have not observed any precipitation as of yet...keep those fingers crossed.

Our trained avalanche forecaster and weather guru is still out and his absence has been extended to the 21st of March, so the in-depth weather observations from Hirakawa Study Plot are put on hold til then.

Todays's Avalanche Hazard safe out there powderhounds!

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

Test Profile Observations:

On Sunday March 18th Compression tests conducted on SE aspects of Shizenyen area were as follows;

CTM (9) RP@ 9cm down on / 0.5~1.0
CTE (4) RP@ 9cm down on / 0.5
CTH (24) SC @ 104 cm down on facets and / 0.5

A steep temperature gradient was observed in the snowpack (between 70cm (-8.4) and 140 (-3.4 cm) which contributed to the facetting on the 104 cm layer.

Travel Advisory:

As noted yesterday, people heading off-piste today should be cautious in wind loaded areas and in areas that exposed to direct solar radiation. Last weeks snowfalls combined with the high winds have contributed to exteremely variable snowpack conditions. Hard wind scoured ice/crust on ridges exposed to wind and soft deeper snowpack in lee sided gullies and concaved terrain. Steeper terrain will be more affected by the sun today and may become unstable by later morning or afternoon. Pockets of instabiltiy may be found in shallow snowpack where wind slab is present and where islands around rocks/trees meet these wind slab conditions.   Read more ...
