Minakami Now!

Sunday 20th January 2008, 7:08am
Weather conditions: overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow fell for spells yesterday brining around 5cm to the valley in Minakami. Tenjindaira received a good dump of around 30cm but a lot of the snow in exposed areas was carried away by the winds.

Today the sky is overcast with a moderate wind that is expected to ease during the day. Tomorrow there may be strong winds in the morning, once again easing in the afternoon.

There has been a lot of new snow fall and a lot of wind transportation of snow in the last 8 days. This has loaded South faces with between 70cm - 120cm of new snow, much of which has not settled (because of cold temperatures). Compression tests yesterday on a South face (1950m)revealed some easy results in the upper snow pack down as deep as 70cm. This may result in some loose snow avalanches in the next few days on steeper terrain. Lower gradient terrain would be a good option if it wasn't so deep out there!

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 20th January 2008, 7:28am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another sprinkling of snow overnight and another cold morning, -4 at the moment. As the forecast said, it is cloudy early on and a bit of a grey start to the day, though it may well turn into a fine day - we shall see.

We'll be posting another update to this page later this evening.

PM update:

Well, it has been a generally cloudy day all day with temperatures hovering around the zero mark. We have been hearing reports from friends though who have been up to Hakkai-san in Muikamachi (to the north of Yuzawa) and apparently it was snowing up there this morning - and quite heavily at times. Great snow conditions as well by all accounts.

More cloud for tonight with a chance of light snowfall during the night, but nothing major with cloud forecast for Monday and finer weather along with milder temperatures on Tuesday.   Read more ...

The sun is shining and the skies are blue in Nozawa this morning.

Yesterday the snow stopped mid morning apart from the odd flurry. It is still very cold, minus 9 at the top and well below zero in town. It is going to stay cold until at least Tuesday. We are expecting a little more snow over night and then a few snowless days.

The town is busy even for a weekend, with many people coming for the Nagano Prefectural Ski Champs. Today is also Children's day, with Children skiing for free.   Read more ...

Sunday 20th January 2008, 11:17am
Weather conditions: snowing.
New snowfall: --

We say hello to close to 10cm of fresh this morning and it is still going. The cold temps of the last few days have past us by, and warmer temperatures are bringing substantial snowfall for the Furano resort.

More snow is expected later today and tomorrow.

Kuma Otoshi is still closed and at very high avalanche risk.

Enjoy the fresh snow today and expect more to come.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Sunday 20th January 2008, 12:23pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was quite a good day although the visibility was somewhat less than the day before. The peak of Mt Niseko An'nupuri had a great cover of slightly denser than average snow that was very springy. It made for some of the best turns this season, providing faceshot after faceshot, despite not being much more than thigh to waist deep. The Miharashi forrest area was not as deeply covered as the past two weeks, but there was a fresh cover of light snow, nonetheless. The warmer temperatures over the last couple of days have caused a bit of melting from my observation, and the contour of the terrain seems a little more obvious. Hopefully the next few days will bring some more snowfall to bring back the bottomless pillows of light powder.

The low pressure system to our north has been slowly moving south and squeezing against the high pressure cell to our west. There is also a low pressure system over western China that has been pushing the high pressure cell northwards, butting it right into the northern low and keeping the boundary of the two local systems right over us. This should keep the weather churning lightly until next Tuesday when a low develops directly over us and should stay there, deepening on Wednesday and dominating until the end of the week. Heavy snowfall and winds are likely. We are in for another week of wild weather.

At the time of this report Ace #4, King #4 and Hanazono #3 lifts are suspended.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 20th January 2008, 15:05pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the weather became fine from around lunchtime and after another very cold night this morning started off with some fog but soon cleared to be fine weather. However as the day progressed it has turned grey and cloudy and there is a chance of snow falling this evening and overnight. It doesn't look like it will bring heavy snow though as tomorrow is cloudy in the forecast.

Another cold day with temperatures remaining in the -10 to -13 range.

Night operations today at the following resort areas:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 20th January 2008, 15:21pm
Weather conditions: Sun, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is out this morning, bright white slopes, a good day for bombing down the fresh groomers before they get too chopped up. Temperatures are around -4 and there is a slight breeze.

The Half-pipe in Asagai Snowboard Park actually opened last week on Wednesday, a bit late this year due to lack of snow. It takes a lot of snow to get a good shape on a decent sized Half-pipe, especially this one - with it's usual size measuring in at 3.5m radius transitions and 110m length. Hence the pipe still has an 'open' shape - not good for airing out of the top of, venturing out of the top of the pipe in an airborne mode at the moment will likely cause outside pipe landings or nasty hang-ups (when the board gets caught on the lip and the body continues back into the pipe (a 4 meter drop) usually causing acute pain of some kind!). In short (cutting the jargon), the shape sucks.

Well, here's hoping for more snow in this coming week.   Read more ...
