Furano Now!

Saturday 20th January 2007, 8:35am
Weather conditions: Light snow, sunny spells.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was an awesome day on the mountain and today should be even better. I have just cleared the snow from around our house and last night we received 20+cm of the driest, lightest powder I have ever seen and no evidence of wind at all. I won't be getting on the mountain untill late this afternoon but can't wait to check out the conditions up there.

Over the last 24 hours we would have received a good 60cm of fresh snow on the mountain but this morning is looking fairly clear with some nice sunshine coming through. There is no wind at all in town and the current temperature is -8.

The resort has updated the snow depth measurements and reports we now have 210cm on-piste on the upper mountain.

The black un-groomed 'Kumaotoshi' is still opening on every hour for 10 minutes.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 20th January 2007, 9:43am
Weather conditions: grey sky with sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
How cold was it last night? - Cold. The village temperature reading was on -11 when it was bedtime. You know it's cold when you wake up and there's heavy frosting on the inside of the window pane, anyone seen the film 'End of days' - when the cold comes? - kind of reminds me of that.

Yesterdays slope conditions were amazing (the best yet!) - quite a heavy dump of snow - but not wet. Excellent lines from the top of Gondola No 2 could be taken - literally from right at the top all the way to the bottom, staying on, or close to the gelande with no walk out problems due to powder traps. About 60cm of powder in places, you can also still find the tips of bushes rearing from the snow which make for nice & hard pop-offs onto steep powder landings - Look for these and either use them or avoid them - wrong stance = wrong result.

So, a frosty -6 in the village - Naeba is totally clear and free from low cloud. The sky towards Tashiro is grey. The sun is out and so gelande conditions are excellent There seems to be zero wind. Everything is looking set for a spanking weekend on the slopes...   Read more ...

With another top-up of 10-15 cms over night, the riding today will again be great with a lot more visibility to see your way through the terrain.

Light dustings will continue through the day and over the next few days.

There are a lot of people in the village, but not too much so that fresh tracks cannot be found.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 20th January 2007, 9:48am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A partly cloudy start to the day in Nozawa but it looks as though we may be in for a sunny day on the mountain. Yesterday, after the new snow, was a great day, particularly up on Yamabiko earlier in the day. Last night however was a whopping –15C on the mountain, so much of the snow will now be quite icy at least until the day warms up. The current temperatures are –7C on Yamabiko and –9C at Uenotaira, while the village is presently –5C. The visibility today will be great.

The forecast is for the weather to fine up over the next two days with snow to set in again on Monday evening.

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 20th January 2007, 9:59am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There has been no snow overnight as expected but there is still a fair bit of cloud in the region and the sun has not yet made an appearance, but generally it is fine weather. It was a cold night though and so the snow that fell yesterday morning is still on the trees and snow conditions should be good this morning. There is only a slight breeze.

It may rise to around +4 degrees today and as things stand it looks like tomorrow should be more of the same.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 20th January 2007, 10:16am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was some more snowfall yesterday afternoon but only a sprinkling to add on to what we got the night before. It was very cold overnight and this morning there is a fair amount of cloud but we also have some blue sky and it is sunny in places.

I spent a few hours out there yesterday in the Okushiga / Yakebitaiyama region of the resort. There were very few people on the slopes - certainly no waiting for any lift - and there was a lot of fresh snow to play in. The snow depth numbers are not looking normal for mid-January, but the snow conditions are good.

Today will be busier than a weekday as you might expect but it is still not too busy to enjoy.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Saturday 20th January 2007, 10:17am
Weather conditions: Sunny and partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As expected the weather cleared yesterday to produce a beautifulblue sky day. As a result some settling and melting occuring in exposed areas and the subsequesnt clear night last night with cold temperatures produced an icy layer on roads and a thin crust on the snow.

Today is once again a fine day with some high cloud now moving in. There is no wind to speak of and the visibility is great.

The snow that was forecast for tomorrow has disappeared and it now loks like it will be a fine and clear day with the snow now not showing up until Monday.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 20th January 2007, 11:54am
Weather conditions: Broken cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning once again the rosy fingers were playing among the peaks at dawn. Later the sky scattered clouds with no evidence of significant winds aloft. Yesterday above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain inconsistant light snow flurries were observed with very light winds at ridge crest (1,950'ish m a.s.l.). The sky was obscured up there most of the day. Generally there was no new snow in the past 24 hours of any significance. The daily warming did not amount to much. The visibility should be excellent today.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) the 0630 hr. reading is:
Sky: Scattered clouds
Temperature: Present: -9.5 C
Maximum: -1 C
Minimum: --10 C
Wind: Very light from the west
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 928 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 70 cm
Foot penetration: 16 cm
Surface: facets, to size 3 mm
Density of surface snow: 110 kilograms per cubic meter

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. The hazard may increase with daytime warming.

Travel Advisory:
Yesterday with limited visibility in the area above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain (Hiyodori Mine south side specifically) the snow was cracking between ski tracks (up-hill track) and was shearing easily down about 30 cm on the melt-freeze crust. There was no feeling of threat in the moderate terrain skied but the confidence level on more aggressive terrain would have been low. Size 2 natural avalanches were observed in an open, steep, southerly aspect near the Nori Kura Lift Company terrain.

Another professional avalanche observer crew on the Goryu Lift Company terrain and above reports low confidence in the snow pack stability on northerly aspects with slabbing in the recent storm snow at ridge crest especially. Some natural activity was observed. The stability is felt to be improving rapidly but it is still in the transitional stage. There were large grains observed associated with the shears on both southerly and northerly aspects.

This morning the surface snow in the Hira Kawa Station Snow Study Plot was definitely recrystallized but generally settling well.

Yesterday the uphill ski penetration was 20 to 30 cm on the southerly aspects and more on the northerly. Good skiing was reported on both aspects.

Daytime warming will probably raise the level of the hazard.   Read more ...
