Nozawa Onsen Now!
Friday 20th February 2009, 8:08am
Cloudy, light snow and rain, strong wind
After some overnight snow at village level, it is currently 2 degrees and raining lightly here in Nozawa Onsen. It is, however, -2 degrees up on Yamabiko and snowing. 10cm of new snow is reported all over the resort and it is still falling up on the higher slopes. There is a strong southwesterly wind of around 40km/h at the top of the resort.
The current weather conditions are expected to continue throughout the day before temperatures will drop this evening bringing snow to the entire resort and the village. Unfortunately the forecast is for the freezing level to rise again by Sunday night and for Monday's precipitation to fall as a mixture of rain and snow at village level.
Yesterday saw great conditions early on with lots of new snow across the entire resort. As the temperatures rose the snow quality deteriorated somewhat on the lower slopes.
Today brings great snow conditions higher up the resort, but very windy today. We may see some lift closures if conditions worsen.
All lifts will operate except Yunomine, Mizunashi, Challenge and Utopia
A warm one today, but the comfort only lasts until the early afternoon. Yet another heavy winter pattern charges in this afternoon with 6-8cm pile rates. Today, watch for avalanche warnings and avoid the deep snow as it is as thick as porridge due to last night's rainfall. The warmth ends noonish today before the winter pattern arrives, so I do recommend hitting the night piste. Read more ...

Snow getting heavier later
The snowfalls eased last night but there was enough yesterday to finally push the snowdepth at Annupuri up to 4m. If we get a decent amount of snow over this weekend all areas of the resort up high could crack this milestone, as long as the wind doesn't get too strong and blow if all off. Currently there's light snow falling but as the day progresses this should get a lot heavier. Temps will get a little mild and the snow will be heavier than what we've had over the last few days. As the low pressure system moves through though temps will cool again. Strong winds are already affecting the peak area and access there will be restricted today. Most lifts are able to operate this morning but as the day progresses and the winds increase expect to see most of the higher lifts close down.
The snow started up again late last night and continued through to this morning bringing another 20cm to the valley level with up to 50cm in the upper mountains. This brings the total snow this week to 150cm (Tenjin). It actually looks like Winter!
The air temperature may warm up today bringing rain around lunch time at the valley level but this should be snow in the upper mountains. More heavy snow forecast from this evening but it should lighten up throughout the night but still continue on throughout Saturday. Read more ...

Cloud, light rain, sun - mixed up! Strong winds top
The snow clouds cleared up yesterday in the afternoon revealing some blue skies behind the remaining clouds. We had some strong winds last night and also now which is affecting some resort operations (see below). Other than the wind, it's a strange one. The roads look wet and indeed there is some very light rain falling at the moment. At the same time the sun is out. And it's very mild again I'm afraid, currently at around 6 degrees so those winds feel quite warm. Hopefully the temperatures will fall during the day and we have rain turning into snow forecast for tonight, as well as snow through tomorrow.
The strong winds are having an affect on the resorts. Naeba's gondolas are all at a standstill this morning and all of Kagura, all of GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen are closed today. Other resorts are seeing limited lift operations - Iwappara have only 2 lifts moving and expect other places to see similar restrictions until these winds calm down.
Nighta tonight is at the following resorts in Yuzawa: Naeba Iwappara
In Minamiuonuma just to the north, nighta at: Ishiuchi Maruyama Centleisure Maiko Joetsu Kokusai
Unfortunately we had some heavy rain in Yuzawa today (though apparently it was wet snow higher up), though the stronger winds did calm down a bit. It's going the other way again from now though with some very strong winds forecast overnight.
Rain is still falling but sometimes it's more like sleet and then looks like it's trying to turn into snow. So it is trying!
The good news is that there is a very high chance that it will be full on snow soon and snow is forecast for tonight and most of the day tomorrow. The official forecast for Yuzawa is 15cm-30cm of snow between now and tomorrow morning, so fingers crossed we can report that in the next post. There's a real worry that strong winds will be affecting resort operations especially in the morning, so if you are planning on visiting Yuzawa early on it will be best to check with the resorts to make sure they will be open.
Again, more snow has fallen. A nice 20-30cm on the floor outside. Reports yesterday were of snow up past the knees with strong howling winds towards the latter end of the day. Great big smiles coming off of the mountain - just like it should be.
The wind is still blowing hard at times this morning but doesn't seem to be as bad as in whats in store for tonight - more snow etc... And although the report spelled out rain for this morning, I haven't seen a drop of it - it's too cold. Though you never know!
The fact is that things just got better from last weeks dump of snow. So happy days and yes we still have over a month to go up here in Naeba - and most likely much longer. Read more ...
Shiga Kogen Now!
Friday 20th February 2009, 9:48am
Light snow, winds, cloud
Interesting varied weather this morning - but not if you want to be skiing the whole of Shiga Kogen.... a fair part of the resort is closed today due to the strong winds blowing around. With some light snow falling you would think it might be cold but it is rather mild with the temperature creeping above 0 in places and just hovering below in others. Cold for some places, but not for Shiga Kogen!
So what's open? Well for now, just part of Kumanoyu in the southern section is open. Mammoth, Nishidateyama, Ichinose Diamond, Sun Valley, Maruike, Giant and Okushiga Kogen are all at least part open. Expect more to open up as the winds get less, which they are forecast to do later this morning.
Official resort snow depths as of 20th February 09:
It was all about the early morning lines today...some good snow overnight, woke up to 30-40 cms to shovel off the car and out of the carpark which got me pretty excited especially as snow was still falling early this morning. It wasn't quite what I hoped for up there though...the snow had started falling as rain in the valley by 9:30 and though it wasn't raining hard it was enough to damper the spirits a bit. This precipitation was falling as light rain even at the top of Goryu and is still falling lightly...enough to wet the snow up. Hard to get amped up in the gondola with the sound of raindrops tapping the roof. There's plenty of powder out there, just a bit wet and heavy around this side of town today as the temperatures are just not low enough. At our weather station near Happo-ike it's currently -0.5...not cold for mid-February that's for sure.
That said the rains not falling hard so we shouldn't see any streaking like the last rain caused. Temperatures will drop overnight and everyone's calling for tomorrow to be the business with minus temps all day. Next week looks set to warm up again so make the most of tomorrow...
