Niseko Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 8:26am
Weather conditions: overcast, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We had another day of light snow yesterday, with the sun making an appearance or two in the mid morning. By midday there was a layer of fog across the middle of the mountain so higher areas offered the best visibility. Hanazono was the exception with great visibility all the way to the bottom of the first chair.

A band of mild low pressure systems to our west is pushing a high over us to the east, and it is currently snowing big flakes right down to the village. A big low looks like it will appear late in the week or weekend to our east.

Night skiing is getting busier as is the village night life. The atmosphere in Hirafu is getting livelier with more visitors arriving each day - right in time for some heavier snowfalls expected on Saturday.

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 8:33am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was generally a fine day with the sun managing to appear at times.

The forecast for this morning is looking off, at least for the moment. We have snow lined up for early this morning but but right now there isn't much cloud and even a fair bit of blue sky over Yuzawa. It is also not particularly cold with the temperature at around +2 degrees at the moment, so we'll need the temperature to drop. It looks sunny up at Naeba and Kagura as well.

Things are looking more cloudy towards the north though, so hopefully some snow clouds are moving in fast and we might get some snowfall a bit later on.

Looking at the forecast, tomorrow is a mixed bag of cloud and snow again (though once again not particularly cold temperatures) and currently cloud for Saturday.

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 9:08am
Weather conditions: Moderate Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It started snowing again last night and the Echoland base car had a good 10 cm dusting of fresh light dry powder. Looks set to be snowing all day, visibility is low due to the snow but it will be a nice day to get some mouthfuls of powder on the runs... possible warming tonight could bring some rain showers though it seems hard to believe looking outside right now.

Goryu Toomi, Hakuba 47 and Happo-One, Tsugaike Kogen and Cortina upper slopes are open with some lower lifts in operation. Goryu Sky 4 is open. Happo & Tsugaike are beginning preparations on lower lifts and should be open by the weekend. Good snow falling now so hopefully soon.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Huge amounts of snow over the last week and high winds some days will mean heavily loaded lee slopes and huge unstable cornices. Snow falling all day makes this another day to enjoy the powder on the slopes. Exercise extreme caution if planning on heading out backcountry today.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Heavy snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow overnight in Nozawa but it has just started to snow quite heavily and we are expecting 9cm this morning. It is very cold in the village and is set to drop to -11 on Friday night at the top of the mountain. Conditions were absolutely fantastic up there yesterday and it should be packed and dry today. Last night groomers could be seen working away on the lower runs getting them ready for this weekend when the hill opens up properly. The official opening ceremony for the season is on Saturday morning.

We are looking for snow to continue until midday on friday bringing us about another 20cm.

In other news, the igloo is looking a bit sad. Fortunately two professional igloo makers from Switzerland have turned up so we are scrapping the renovation plans and starting work on Mark 2 tonight.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 9:35am
Weather conditions: Clear skies (becomming cloudy)\r\n
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Clear starry skies last night brought low temperatures (-10) to the valley which was great conditions for snow making. The sun was out this morning but the clouds are slowly closing in around the mountains, with snow forecast starting from mid morning, continuing through to this evening.

There is more snow forecast for tomorrow which should set up the ski areas in Minakami for a good weekend. Norn and Okutone ski areas should be able to open as expected, albeit with limited runs. Tenjin now has all runs open except for the Tajirisawa return course (ropeway run). Houdaigi is expected to open another 2 lifts today to make a total of 4 lifts running with 7 courses.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 10:05am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow on the roads again this morning with about 5cm overnight and snow is presently falling in Shiga Kogen and looks set to hopefully continue throughout the day. It's not as cold this morning, and only a light wind and so with the new snow it is a good time to be out on the slopes here - which are at times almost deserted at the moment.

More snow for tomorrow it looks like but there is a chance of decent weather over the weekend as the forecast currently stands.

Come on a weekday like today at the moment and if you avoid the school trips you will have the slopes almost to yourself. That will of course change over the next few days and this weekend as Christmas approaches, but conditions here at the moment are well worth checking out - even if the snow depths are still not that deep yet.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 10:45am
Weather conditions: Clear skies - turning cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was thought to be a blue skies day today - judging by the bright sun and glare from the snow, but as I type there appears to be a dark front moving in from behind Naeba; West-South-West. Oh, and it has just started to snow! The temperature is sitting on zero and I guess with this snow and dark cloud moving in the temperature should drop throughout the day, definitely has that 'getting cold' feeling. Gondola #2 running as normal - no activity yet with Gondola #1 which will take you right up top. A lot of activity around the Prince Hotel this morning though - The Front Desk staff and Bell Boys are all primed, on location and bowing to your every move. Most of the Naeba area including the hotel will be opening up to full throttle this weekend, what with the shop-owners busily stocking their shop shelves and the rental places dusting off the rest of their stock for the season.

OK, so 1 day left of quietness on the slopes and then we're in to the Christmas mayhem
- Rock-on Santa! you have presents to deliver!   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 11:43am
Weather conditions: bright sunshine, slightly cloudy, cold winds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Bright sunshine this morning demanded chrome lenses otherwise it was super bright on the mountain. The snow is still soft and fluffy even though there was no fresh snow overnight.

The groomed runs are superb, with Kitanomine`s Giant course living up to its name as the groomers down there today probably couldnt have been any faster.

The ski resort have updated their snow depth to 150cm.

Kuma Otoshi is closed due to cracks having already appeared on course. The early season efforts by ski patrol and ski instructors to pack the run to avoid such a slide have been in vain. Everyone is hoping that the situation is repaired as soon as possible.

Snow is expected later this afternoon and all day tomorrow, followed by a few days of sunshine over Christmas.

Night skiing is until 8pm each night.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Thursday 20th December 2007, 23:56pm
Weather conditions: cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Sunny skiing in Myoko today after the morning's snows. If a few centimeters were gained in the morning, triple that was lost by the end of the day. I would definitely watch out for avalanches tomorrow in the upper reaches. Don't recommend the "Wall" either this weekend as sun is expected the whole weekend.

Seki still has powder on the upper reaches. Just be sure to watch for warnings.
The pick of the day: definitely Togakushi, as the slopes stayed dry and somewhat cloudy and cool, with relatively low snow loss.

120(Akakura Kanko);105cm (Akakura Onsen); 118cm at the top, 50cm bottom(Suginohara);117cm (Kumado); 72cm(Pine Valley); 167cm (Seki Onsen);45cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);28cm (Madarao Sympathique); 83cm (Madarao Kogen); 98cm (Cupid Valley); 118cm (Myoko Ski Park); 80cm (Togakushi)   Read more ...
