Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 20th December 2005, 8:29am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow seems to be easing off a bit this morning. It was snowing earlier on (with about another 15cm of new snowfall overnight) but at the moment it is not snowing and the clouds actually seem to be clearing up a bit and it is definitely brighter than it has been. You can actually see more than 100 metres as well today! The forecast is snow, though, so it may well start up again any time.

The winds have also died down a lot since yesterday which means that all of Kagura is once more able to open up today (both Mitsumata and Tashiro). Iwappara are also doing their best to open up more slopes - the top quad will be operating today for the first time this season.

Considering that we have so much snow it might seem strange that the resorts aren't fully open yet. So why is that? Well it's a combination of a few things. One thing is that so much snow fell in such a short time - with nearly two metres over a few days, resorts have been struggling to get slopes ready. Iwappara have wanted to open up more before now but only today are they able to get the top quad lift going. Other resorts are not able to open earlier than planned because they don't have much flexibility with staffing etc. Then there is probably the fact that some resorts will not open up fully now because they don't think enough people will turn up to justify it.

Expect everything to be open soon though....

Update:

It has been cloudy for most of the day so far with light snow falling every now and again and snow higher up. It's relatively mild as well compared to recent days. The forecast has more snow lined up over the next week, so it looks like we can expect even more.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Sunny with partly cloudy skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
8.00 AM REPORT:

Relentless peltings from Ular the Norse Mountain God of snow have left copious amounts of the white gold over the past few days, but this morning he decided a reprise was in order and thus the sun has arisen over the snow capped Alps and it looks like it is going to be a sunny day out there. No new snow reported this AM but strong winds will have deposited snow drift and most tracks will have been filled in. Clear skies last night made for chilly temperatures and the packed down snow has hardened nicely for all those corduroy carvers ou there. Rememeber those UV rays will burn your tender pupils!

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Mostly clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Finally a break in the snowy weather and we get to see the sun once more. Don't get me wrong I'm not hoping for the snow to stop for long but to see the sun once in awhile is nice. Probably about 5-10cm of new snow since last report which will be mean nice turns on the groomers and still amazing powder off-piste. Deep powder and sunshine...is there any better combination on this earth?   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 20th December 2005, 10:11am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Things are a bit calmer today (a lot calmer actually) with light snow falling early on but a good chance that things might clear up as the day progresses. Conditions out yesterday were pretty nasty with some really strong winds blowing the snow around for most of the day. While it is still quite windy at times it is not nearly as much as it was yesterday. So it was snowing yesterday but the snow depths haven't really changed probably due to the winds.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 20th December 2005, 11:10am
Weather conditions: heavy constant snowfall
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow changing to snow, with more snow then snow and later we are thinking about having some ...snow. Calm heavy and steady snowfall. Earlier this morning the visibility was low due to extremely heavy, you guessed it, snowfall. It's still heavy large flakes but visibility is somehow much better. Freshies to be found where ever you go on the mountain and your tracks are bound to get refilled as you sit in the chair on the way back up; no crowds at all. A perfect day for any powder carving super hero.   Read more ...
